Electrical interference from CPU?
Comments (3)Doubtful it's the surge protector, though it's pretty simple to take it out of the chain and verify. Is there any way you can try the sound card in another computer? It might be just the card, not the entire computer. Or it could be the computer power supply passing along a 60Hz hum. Or it could be the arrangement of wires. Where are the speaker wires in relation to the whole setup? Is there a way you could move the speaker wires away from the computer (or route them in a different direction) at least long enough to test?...See MoreElectrical Hum from Furnace
Comments (5)not to shoot down the transformer idea making the noise, but is your furnace by chance electric? I myself have an electric furnace in one of my houses that makes a buzzing noise. It comes from one of the double pole breakers in the furnace unit. Some breakers just make a buzzing noise. I haven't tired replacing the breaker because I don't care that much since the noise isn't that loud and there's no harm from it buzzing at all....See Morehumming electrical wiring
Comments (13)Hmm. Melted is never good. If you are absolutely sure you put the wires back together correctly, then it's time to call an electrician. Sounds like something is loose or overloaded. Is it all copper wire? What's the outer casing? A green or orange fabric-like outer sheath? Could it be dangerous? Absolutely. You never mentioned if there's an outlet/socket in there. A shaver-only outlet will hum, it's an isolating transformer (delivers 120/aka 110 volts but is physically isolated from the house wiring, limiting the size of shock you can get) - they can usually be changed to a GFCI - no more hum. Bulb holders can develop resistance over time which can lead to overheating and humming, also, those cfl bulbs can too. LED bulbs will be a better option. If in doubt, call an electrician. I get a humming like that in an outside wall, but it's the neighbours' ac unit and sometimes hot tub, it's something to do with low frequencies!...See Moreintermittent electrical cable run
Comments (15)First, thanks for the reply. I appreciate that you are taking a stab at helping me with this. I do appreciate that you are the first to actually address the problem I am having. I do appreciate that. YOU ASKED: Do you know if the switch is hooked up to the circuit as a switch loop or does the power come to the switch first and then out to the lights? The feed (hot line) starts at the switch. Whether the ceiling lights are working or not, the switch is hot. At the moment, the lights are not working, but I can rig a test light at the switch and turn it on and off. YOU ASKED: ...have you narrowed down the problem to know that it is definitely AFTER the switch? Yes, by using the test light rig that I mentioned above. I rigged a light between the output of the switch and the return line from the lights. YOU ASKED: If the problem is after the switch, unhook the last two lights so that only the first light is hooked up. Is there still a problem? Once the light again decides to work, I'll try that. I am also going to investigate each can over this weekend to discover whatever I can discover. YOU ASKED: There's no point in digging into the ceiling if the problem ends up being between the switch and an outlet down by the floor. I certainly agree with that. I -think- I have it narrowed down to after the switch, meaning that the problem is with the hot going up or the common coming down. If the lights start working again (they do work intermittently), I will try to isolate to a single light. Thanks again. Rich...See Moredan1554
