pool equipment surge protection

Hi, I have a pool in Florida and have had problems with componets of my Salt Water Chlorine Generator failing since I've moved in. I'm suspicious that surges from lightning are contributing to these failures. The pool equipment is supplied by a sub panel that is mounted near the equipment, which is on an exposed outside wall on the home. My question is what is a good way to protect this equipment. I'm hoping there is a device that I can hook up in the subpanel that will protect the equipment. Also, could you tell me the $ range I'd be looking at for such a device. Thanks for any direction you can give me. Another thing I found with the electrical set up for the pool is that I can find no GFCI in the sub panel that supplies the equipment or in the panel that the pool subpanel is fed from. I'd assume that it would have been required for the install which is about 7-8 years old and was permitted.
