DR rug: Don't trim it: just have it re-fringed (if you're keeping it).

Entryway rug: Do you want colors to coordinate with the LR rug?

Do you think I can DIY the re-fringing? I have a sewing machine, though am not sure I can get the needle through the rug/fringe. Perhaps I could glue it on? Anyone have any suggestions on what rug fringe to get? I'd don't want to invest too much more money on this rug as I may replace it in a few years--though figure with some decent fringe it would enhance my ability to resell it plus look goo in the meantime. As one end of the fringe comes by a walk-way in the DR, a shorter fringe would help it look neater.

OSH: Yes, the entry rug needs to coordating with the LR rug. Could you please post a pic of the rugs you have (not the LR or study)--either an entry or runner. I've just seen a few pics of them you had posted awhile ago, but they have the kind of look I want, though perhaps not the right color.

What do you think of these (just to get an idea of what you're looking for), in the 2x4, less than $500 range?

Wow! You work fast! I like 2, 3, 9, but do prefer your Ferahan rug more. I don't want much navy blue in the rug--unless it reads as more black like the Ferahan rug. Does it read that way IRL or is it just the pic? In fact, I wonder if a touch of black instead of so much red would work well and help to unify the two rugs (where one is more burgundy red and the other more salmon red)? Do any rugs actually use black or is it more of an indigo? I think I should stear away from any silk as well--both due to the cost and durability. I actually could see something a tad tribal there, like #2 since the other two rugs have more of a floral motif. What do you think? I'm still in the brain storming stage, but should have something before the rainy season sets in.

Does that Ferahan rug come in a smaller size? Can you repost the pics in your house? The description says blue but it looks more black to me. I could see that in my house as well--both the runner and entry. I know, copy cat.....

Valerie: Every time I try to take a pic of my rug, it looks weird. This is the best pic I have, that's pretty true of how it looks irl.

Very occasionally, there will be black in an "oriental," but usually it's just a blue that's so dark that it looks black--as in my rug in the pic above.

Of #s2, 3 and 9 above, I prefer #3 because the 4 corners in the main field echo the pattern in the field of the LR rug.

Not sure how a tribal would look there, actually, because it's so different from what you have in both the LR and DR. You could always try, though. :)

About the fringe: It will cost you about $100 to have the rug re-fringed, I believe. I'm not sure I would recommend doing it yourself.

P.S. Copy cat? Who cares? What's important is that you get a rug which suits your home and your taste. I do have an (unsolicited) suggestion, though: I would not purchase a nice handknotted rug for the entryway until you know whether you will keep the DR rug. As you know, any rug you buy for the entry is going to last you forever (that's what I love about my entry and hallway runner--they're thickly woven, with a short nap, and really do wear like iron: you can't see any dirt on them--ever). So I just don't want to see you get a new entry rug, then decide that you want a new DR rug, and then have to start all over again with a new entry rug! Of course, you could always sell it, I guess. :)

That is what I need: wears like iron, short nap and shows no dirt. Whatever rug we put there we will need to move up the door sweep so I know I need to get low pile. OK, no for tribal--just brainstorming. I'm not too sure what I'll do about the DR rug, but I do know my DH will not be too supportive of my obsessing much longer about the decor--we are supposed to be done and I need to get a paying job now kids are back in school. Too bad I did not think of that when you still had my LR rug and you could've compared the colors. Do you think they work, though, or is it too dark? It's these last stages trying to tie it all together that are so challenging.

You just never know until you see it in place. You can order it and see how it looks and if you don't like it, you can send it back! :)

Yes, it's on my watch list. The DR is also a red sarouk, though I think Karastan at some point changed the back ground color as this one reads as a truer red (and closer match to LR) and the one in the DR is definitely burgundy. Though I'm wondering if it's not too big as the width of the foyer is only 5-1/2".

What's the width of the door frame?

If you can get away with a 2x3, even better!

I think 2x3 will be too small. The door is 36". Here is a pic of a cheapo LNT rug that is 24x44. I don't think I'd want it any smaller. I think I'll check Tuesday Morning. I've only seen smaller rugs there--maybe I'll get lucky. Or at least I can get a better feel for what works colorwise--as I'm kinda stumped on this one situated as it is between two other rugs, one of which is a real beauty.

Good idea. I like this size, because it almost perfectly lines up with the door frame. :)

I would look for a demilune or an oval rug, that would echo the window on the door, give some coverage at the entry, but bring in some curve to balance the hard lines and angles in the area.

Les: You brought up an excellent point. (knocks self on head) Why did I not see that? I wonder if they make demilunes in more traditional, handknotted designs but I will look into it. Probably not handknotted, but more traditional, wool would be nice. I guess that gets rid of the fringe problem as well.
