Upgrade Circuit before kitchen reno?

Hi -- We have a 1962 split level in So. Cal. It has the original wiring and 100 amp circuit box. When we moved in, we discovered that there were ground wires in the receptacles (just not connected), so we replaced all of the outlets with decora grounded outlets, connecting the ground wires, and added GFCI outlets to the kitchens, baths and laundry. We also added a 240v outlet in the garage for all the power tools.

Our next project is a kitchen reno. So that the cost doesn't hit us huge all at once, I have been knocking out the smaller cost items ahead of the major demo. For example, we just removed the old water heater from the kitchen (crazy!) and installed an exterior mount on-demand gas water heater.

The next thing on my list would be to upgrade our 100 amp circuit box to a 200 amp with dedicated circuits and add a 240 v outlet to the kitchen (currently the rangetop and ovens are all gas). Does it make sense to upgrade the circuit box before the reno? One contractor (whom we did not hire) said he thought it looked like our wiring was fabric encased, so we may need to redo wiring when we reno. Is there a reason to wait on the circuit box, or can we do it now?
