UPDATE: Daughter House Painted

My daughter and SIL finally have their house painted, although the carpenter/painter is still working on their stairs that had to be rebuilt.

Thank you all for your suggestions. (Original thread in link below.) I think the house turned out just fine and should please those that thought the house should remain yellow. :) It's a tan with yellow undertones. The house looks better in person than the whole house AFTER photo. The front porch pictures show a more accurate coloring. Although you cannot see from the original, the shutters went from green to black and the light fixtures were painted.

Existing white wrought iron was painted black for a seating area at end of porch. Today, they are buying two black rockers for the stair end of the front porch.

Now, although I said the house turned out fine, I still think that the lattice part needs something. What do you think of painting a facial board the base color of the house and attaching where the lattice is pieced? Perhaps also paint the strips between the arches, white. Is this cheesy? I know that someone suggested some flexible trim for the arches, but the kids just cannot do that right now.

The house looks great! I love that front porch. I like how they reversed the colors of the lattice and the wood surrounding it. I don't think I'd like the painted facial board. I like all the vertical lines kept on the upper level in the posts and rails. I'd like to see a mock up of what it would look like to frame the lattice with white trim across the front.

Great updates on your daughters house.
I just love the porch and I think the new color on house was a good choice.
I would have liked to see the latice work in the arch done the same color as the surrounding arch.

I am also not a purple fan, but that is really beautiful. And perfect for a growing girl. The black and white with the purple is so sophisticated. I hope you can convince her to not add posters everywhere again (coming from someone who was never able to accomplish that; they didn't come down until after college when she decided she wasn't moving back home).

"How cool dilly dally! Does your bathroom have the original toilet & sink? Was the sink a wall hung one? And are the shower doors original or were they added later? There is a curtain rod above the shower doors and we can't figure out why there are both." No, I checked the date on the toilet when I was looking at the real estate and it was replaced in 1982. (You can look under the tank lid to see the date stamp.) I'm not sure about the sink. It is one that hangs off the wall though. The tub I know is original. It is the same as the one you show with the wider ledge in the middle. My shower rod was installed so that the curtain hung inside the tub. I moved it so the curtain hangs outside. No shower doors. (Thank gawd. I hate them.) I don't think shower doors would be original with a tub like that. My tub is grody. No shine left on it and it always looks dirty. I've looked into replacing it but there is no way to get it out without damaging tiles I was told and the size is so odd that a replacement to fit exactly is impossible. I may have to buy one of those acrylic tub recovers to get a decent tub that looks clean. The original "shower head" was called a 'Victorian' I found out. It was like a stick on a hinge from the wall, low, about waist high. You moved it up and tiled the hinged head to shower. Or you moved it straight down to fill the tub. I liked it. I had to replace it when it broke and could not find anything like it. They don't make them any more. I had to redo the whole works adding separate faucet and showerhead and controls. You probably have a built in ironing board in the kitchen. Most of them end up getting converted into spice cabinets. Mine still had the original wood ironing board in it and although I do iron a lot I did not want to iron on an old stinky wood thing. The built in wall ironing boards that they seel nowdays to do not retro fit into these old ones. I made mine into a spice cabinet by adding little shelves. I'm glad I did it this way. It's one thing to be a purist and try to preserve the ingerity of a vintage home but if it means wasted space with a non functioning widget - it goes. There is also a thing built into the wall in the basement that I had thought was an old mangle in the laundry room at first. (They were popular in that era.) There was a slit in the wall by it. There was a built-in long table in the rec room by the slit on the other side of the wall. I figured out that it was made to hold a roll of kraft paper to pull through the slit to use as a disposable table cover. I know they still sell rolls of table kraft paper like this for restaurants, so I could use it but I never throw dinner parties in my basement and don't have kids who do crafts. "The original must have been one with long pipes." I still have the original. It did not work when I bought the house. I found out when I took it apart to repair, that the pipes do not create the sound. There was a sort of xylophone thingy inside that made the actual sound. The pipes were for decoration only. If I had not been able to repair it, I was going to get a wireless chime to install elsewhere in the house and use the alcove for holding a decorative vase or something. "It's when you cut or break it that it releases fibers and causes problems." True. Some people do not know about asbestos tile and try to chisel it up without proper proceedure. Hi all. I know things are confusing. She was stopped in DC because the car had been reported stolen. When stopped the car was searched and drug paraphanalia was found. No drugs. The charges against her were filed in Montgomery Co Md and since she was stopped in DC they held her. Montgomery Co has three days (not counting weekends and holidays) to transfer her. Since they have not done that yet she is still in DC being held for Mont. Co. Montgomery county has already told me that the car charges won't hold because she was not verbally told to return the car. Duh, she was missing! We face booked, texted, voice mailed, emailed etc but they are saying there is no way to prove she ever got any of the messages. My middle daughter has made some good contacts and we are hoping there is a treatment option for her. So many questions ahead. I am taking the car to carmax this afternoon after work and selling it for whatever they will give me. I never want to see it again. Thank you all for your concern and support. Hi s y, I can't say how much I love this space! It's been amazing, but there are a few irritations that I need to remedy. One big one is the fact that it's detached from my house, with no good covered pathway between the two. I often find myself jumping out of bed because I forgot to lock things up, which isn't bad in the summer, but during Oregon's rainy season, well you can imagine. :) I'm researching solutions that will allow me to remotely control the door lock, heater, music and lights. I'm looking closely at the Brilliant Smart Home solutions. Thank you, I think they did great for a young couple. Wait to you see the Before and After of the inside of their house. :)

chickadee2 - They are maxed out with what they are doing to the house, so no new trim done on the arches because flexible trim would have to be used. I cannot make a mock-up of curves, either.

I see what you mean about the vertical lines. I didn't think about what was above when coming up with that idea. :)

lyban - The kids were going by the other thread and using the suggestion to paint the lattice white and the arch darker - reverse from what they had because the posters said that the darker lattice made the area look like a black hole, or something like that. :)

It looks great! I wouldn't do a thing with the arches. I'm crazy about those wonderful porches. May your D and SIL enjoy many happy decades in that house!

Really nice job. It's amazing how in the Before photo your eye goes straight to the lattice arches and in the After, it goes straight to the house itself. Have they considered having the roof cleaned? The algae stains take away from the overall beautiful effect a little.

They did clean the roof. lol It's hard to keep clean with all of the trees surrounding the house. The power wash man was afraid that they would have problems with breaking shingle if they power washed too hard. The next project...a new roof maybe in 3 years if they are still living there.

mpwdmom - My daughter wants a porch swing and I have a wonderful swing (my children grew up with it) in my basement, but it's too long. They were given the wrought iron by my SIL's mother and it is working well in that space. The new rockers will have to do for the "moving" seats.

Thank you, everyone. :) There is still some landscaping to be done around the lattice that I think will be a huge help.

Should I post the Inside pics here, or start a new thread? I think that everyone has seen the nursery, and maybe also seen the kitchen.

Ooops. Sorry about the roof comment. I'm sure the person doing the power washing made the right call. The house will be perfection with a new roof, although that is a huge investment.

I'd love to see more pictures.

Haha...no problem! With a new baby, and both working, they cannot do everything at once. I think they have done great on a limited budget and in a fairly short time .
