Update - Daughters bedroom done, well almost!

Can't find my original post, but a number of months ago I posted asking for ideas on my daughter's bedroom. Finally got it painted and we are both quite pleased with it. She got what she wanted and I got something I can definately live with. At first it was hard to paint over the walls that were there; it was a room that I painted for her when she was a younger and was the 'garden' I gave her. Not liking pink, she had painted over some of the flowers a year or so ago and I thought it was garish, so that part wasn't hard to get rid of. We still have artwork and posters to deal with, so it does look quite bare right now.

We painted the walls in Ellen Kennon's Lilac in eggshell and I absolutely LOVE the color! Never thought I'd care for purple paint, but I am hooked. It is a beautiful shade and has so much life to it! I put up 2" glossy black blinds from JC Penney. The bedding is a Victor Mills 'Aster' set and I had the valences custom made by a woman on Ebay.

Love the bedding and the pink accent items. The bedside lamp is super cute. Perhaps a valance or some curtain panels in a pink print like used in that toss pillow on the bed would add a nice touch to the window. Good luck finding some art work/pictures for the walls.

Handy Guy is one of my favorite humans. He’s a contractor now but I knew him in his very early days before he was so fancy. He still comes down to help me do Christmas every year, and fits me in around his bigger jobs. Not only that he has become a good friend. Jlsch, my education and first jobs were in journalism. I worked in radio and newspapers until I became a SAHM. Over the years I have done a lot of volunteer writing as editor of newsletters for PTAs, Junior League, church, Friends of the Library, etc. I also wrote annual reports for smaller charities I volunteered for. I regularly take online writing classes in Oxford’s continuing ed division to continue working with a writing group I met at Oxford when I took summer classes there in 2009. It’s purely avocational; I am writing a history of each of our kid’s lives just for them to have. I was a baby book slacker and this is something unique and more enduring (I hope) than a lock of hair or a hospital bracelet.

There’s a lot of visual noise with the headboard and blanket - would she be open to using a solid cover comforter to create some separation between them and let the eye rest, then folding her photo blanket at the foot of the bed? Depending on how it’s folded, it looks like a row of photos can be visible at a time, and refolded periodically to feature a different row. I like a “nap blanket” at the foot of the bed anyway so the entire bed doesn’t have to be remade if someone wants a take a quick rest. The walls are a bright, bold color, especially against the backdrop of snow outside. That view should be also be considered as “art”. Drapes can help soften the contrast transition as well as add texture, and complimentary art above the bed can pull that side of the room together. I appreciate your approach to this and hope you and your daughter are enjoying the process together!

You've done a wonderful job!! Girls bedroom makeovers are always a balancing act between what they want and what we can live with. YOu've achieved a perfect balance. I usually am not a fan of valances, but yours are perfect!

It's always hard to change the little girl room for a more grown up daughter. It's a wonderful change and I'm sure it makes her happy too. Your post reminded me of my old Tom Sellick posters!!!

I am also not a purple fan, but that is really beautiful. And perfect for a growing girl. The black and white with the purple is so sophisticated. I hope you can convince her to not add posters everywhere again (coming from someone who was never able to accomplish that; they didn't come down until after college when she decided she wasn't moving back home).

I'm also not a purple fan but that is a lovely shade of lavender and it looks great with the black accents. I'm sure she loves her grown up room :-)

I love it! I guess I should note that I love purple in general, but this room specifically ;) I think this is a room that suits a growing dd, and would work as a lovely guest room years from now....
