the first one shows the color of the siding, which we're considering for the new door. Safer choice, not as risky as a totally different color.

Gosh, the brick is reading coral- is that how it feels IRL? If so, I would not go with an orange door.

Maybe a wonderful moss green, or a bright navy. You could also look for a paint color that is a much deeper shade of the siding color, and do that on the door.

Trim should be the color of the rest of the trim on the house, not the door color.

Les, that is exactly what I was going to say! I think a moss green or navy would look terrific!

I really value your opinions. Looks like I need to rethink in a different direction. The bigger paint swatch in the middle of the door matches one of the colors in the brick. Les, not sure I'd describe the brick as coral (meaning more reddish-orange?), I'd say it a salmon color. I'll get some moss green sample. Although the bright blue sounds pretty, I know I couldn't make that leap. The only flower color that looks decent is a bright blue-purple. Are any of these BM colors what you have in mind as moss green? Would any of them work?

I would go with something green because that would bridge your other colors and look good next to each. I would not go with a dark green, but a moss green or perky mid tone would be lovely. Take a leaf off your plant and match that ;)

I think the navy would be too dark and the color may read as black if it were in shadow. Keep in mind any screen on the outer door will darken the look.

Mmmm, and here I was going to suggest something like a buttery like BM yellow haze...

No bright blue - not sure where that idea originated. A bright navy.

Two of the blues I like are Patriot blue(BM2064-20) and starry night(BM 2067-20); both middle colors of the middle and bottom blue strip. The darkest ones are nice, but from a distance look black. Not sure of the greens, maybe something off the 2nd from top strip? Having a hard time getting the pics to look like IRL. thanks.

Hi - I kind of like the middle blue swatch, middle color. Losing the screen door will really help the door have some definition. Will you being the sidelites too? I think it will really add to your house IMHO.

At first I was thinking green because (for some reason) when I first saw the house front picture, it looked like you had a copper piece (not a turret... not sure what to call it) to the right of the door, and I thought a green would play nicely off the patina. But looking more closely I'm pretty sure it's just shingles...?

But I still like the green. :)And then I saw how much greenery you have in front of your house, and I'm not so sure. Here are some mock-ups that might help you. I'm darkening the colors a bit to make up for the shadows.

Avesmor, thank you so much! Yes, our bay is just regular ahingles, not copper, sigh. I like the greens too, much its more predictable and not very interesting. The tree is a Japanese maple which is normally mahogany-colored this time of year, but for some reason its been more green the past few weeks. I was having a hard time picturing the blue. But now I like the blue the best, just need to find the right one. Thank you Les, for opening my eyes to a blue color. Its a bit frustrating because the blues that looks best from a distance, I dont like as much up close (too bright). The bright navy colors are looking pretty dark when I view the house from the sidewalk, but look nice up close.

You're welcome - glad to be of help. That is the great thing about this place - lots of ideas that inspire us and give us new perspectives. I have learned so much here.

I love the idea of the greens, but as you have discussed, I think all the greenery around the front area makes a green kind of 'safe'. In the winter (assuming you have winter) when some of that greenery is gone, it might be fine.

I do like the middle color blue on the bottom strip best, I think, for overall effect. As for what the color looks like from the street and then up close, only you can decide what matters most to you. Do keep in mind that the effect that most people will have is the look from the street.

If you do decide to go with the blue, since you are losing the storm door, I would consider changing out the front door hardware to a brushed nickel or pewter. I would also look for a larger light fixture, also in the pewter/brushed nickel finish.

One thing I might suggest is getting the little sample jars of the colors you like, and painting some full size pieces of posterboard with each color. Then tape them on the door, one at a time, and leave them for a whole day and night, to see the effect. Be sure to lock the storm door open (or just remove it, if it is coming off anyway) so you can get the full effect of the color. The paint sample jars and posterboard won't cost you that much, and might be much cheaper in the long run than having to repaint the door if you really hate it.

Someday, if it is in the budget, you might consider adding two or three pot lights in the ceiling of the porch. They will brighten the whole area, and make it even more welcoming day or night.

Be sure to let us know what you decide, and post pix of the finished project. It is always great to see 'the end of the story'.

I forgot to mention the hardware earlier. We had to order it at same time as door, and went with a dark wrought iron since it matched the porch light (which is new) and matches the hardware on our back doors. At the time I was envisioning a green color and thought it would look nice. It's been bothering me a bit now that we're going in the blue direction. But its only the handle, maybe it wont matter too much. I love the pot lights suggestion, thanks!

Any chance they would swap out the hardware, since the door is not installed? If not, you will be fine with the dark wrought iron color, since you are going with the medium blue tones, it seems, not the very dark blue.

Are you sure all of those paint colors you've gotten chips for and are considering can be mixed in an appropriate EXTERIOR base for use on your exterior door?

Not all the colors in the chip racks can be used exterior. In some paint color collections the number of exterior *approved* colors is actually quite small.
