How to terminate 14/3 (part of 3-way switch)

Good afternoon -

We just removed a pantry in our mudroom that, inexplicably, had one switch of a 3-way setup for the ceiling light. So now we have a length of 14/3 cable coming down from the ceiling and would like to terminate it in a junction box in the wall. The ceiling is finished and we'd like to avoid tearing everything out, which we'd probably need to do to turn the light wiring into a single-pole system.

Right now we have wire-nutted the neutral and one of the hot wires so that the other light switch is "on" in the up position, and the other hot wire (traveler?) is just capped with a wire nut. Is this the correct way to terminate the 14/3 cable without removing the whole thing?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
