Not sure about this color for my wicker??

I posted (last year!) about painting a wicker set on my porch. I finally got around to it and am now uneasy about the color. I wanted a "soft" white and chose Rustoleum's Heirloom White, but while I liked the color, the satin finish looked and felt very chalky (it doesn't come in glossy). Ivory looked only slightly darker, and came in glossy, so I switched to that.

The wicker looked great at first, but when I started to put it all put back on the porch it seemed to clash with the house paint and look a little pinkish. The settee still needs another coat.

Does this color look odd to you? I'm gonna use some green pillows.

I think it looks okay, but I see what you mean. I would probably add the green pillows and live with it for one summer to see if I liked it after I got used to it. You can always re-paint it next year.

I don't think it looks bad, it kind of blends in, and does not make a statement. The wicker itself is beautiful, maybe a punchier color would bring out the details of the weave and provide a sharper contrast with the house color.

I don't suppose you have a cut piece of your fabric anywhere? Probably not, or you would have shown it. One trick I've used, is to wrap a seat cushion with my fabric and place it on the frame. Even if you have to leave the rest of the bolt rolled on the floor next to the chair, it can help you to visualize. If you had a cut piece, even if it was just pillow size, you could go into a store with other wicker and place it on the cushion to see how you like it with other wicker colors. I would unroll some of the bolt, wrap the cushion and tuck it back onto the chair, place the chair on the rug and pull the whole thing against the wall. Then, snap your shot. And for what it's worth, I love your mohair velvet. It's going to be awesome! I did my favorite vintage chair in brown mohair velvet and even while I worried it was the wrong choice, the finished product is beautiful! But in your first shot, the one with the original chair finish, the shot is dark and the wicker looks tan or gray beige. That's the color you need to shoot for. I realize that the real color was white, but in that shot, the chairs provide the right contrast to both the rug and the Wyeth Blue walls. With your blue gray velvet, it will be gorgeous. I don't know how to get that color, *(unless you can maybe find Annie Sloan chalk paint in French Linen nearby, the chalk paint goes on with a subtle matte finish that might suit those chairs well) but take a look at this blog and you will see what I mean. Patty, funcolors, and kmcg85 all said what I want to say...Forget the splotch-shaped splotches thrown in the middle of the wall, and paint out that whole wall. You've already 'ruined' the wall, so go for it. You don't have to cut in or anything, just use your roller and roll out almost to ceiling and over to adjoining walls. Then, re-hang your picture and look at the effect. If you have new bedding, throw that on the bed too, so you can better visualize what your room would look like in the Richmond Gold. I personally would not go any darker that RG. I think it's plenty dark enough for a bedroom and should give a rich, warm look........but is that look for you? I put a gorgeous periwinkle blue on my bedroom walls several years ago and received so many complements. But the soft blue was always too cool-feeling for me. I was glad to see it gone, and I have Laura Ashley Gold #3 on my walls now. It's warm but not too dark. Works with so many colors I like to use. Several have made the comment about the paint color tying in the furniture better. Well, it will certainly do that. On the other hand, if you want the furniture to stand out more, then you need a little more contrast and maybe not as dark a color. So, you bought gallons. Well, only you know whether you can afford to take the hit for more paint if you ultimately decide against the RG. For next time, may I kindly suggest, buying ONE quart of your chosen color in the sheen you want to use. Use that One quart to do what all have suggested. Pour into a paint tray, throw down a drop cloth, and roll it all out onto at least one wall, put your furniture up against it. Then, if you love it you have a start. If you don't feel love, you are out maybe $10-$20, about the cost of an evening at the movie by yourself. Red

I was shocked to see this thread today!! I logged on to get some Christmas inspiration and to ask questions about colors for the tree!! Kmcg - how in the world did I miss that gorgeous gal!! Nah, she doesn't look a bit naughty or a bit like Marley. Well, I haven't done a THING to my house - not even pulled out decorations. To answer the last 2 ? ...... The cabs were here when we built the house in a cherry finish. I had a painted come in and tape everything off & he sprayed the cabs & then glazed them. People really thought I was crazy for even thinking about painting new cabs ! - but I lived with them for 3 years and was still unhappy with them. The buffet, I had made very reasonably from a cabinet maker. It would be an easy fix for an existing buffet with 3 doors on the bottom. Just take off middle door & install the wine racks. It was originally painted a sage green & I painted it black after painting my walls green. Thanks everyone for your comments and compliments. I really appreciate it. Smiles:)

This new rug is much better. It is like what I was thinking of not having a border because this border is very subtle without such a dramatic color change. It opens up the room rather than making it feel closed in. Don't think of it that yyou are out $70, but rather a savings of $180 because you are not keeping a rug you do not like and you'd ultimately replace anyway--after the opportunity to return it. Good choice and a great price as well!! This one is a keeper. Regarding the armoire, keep trying. You are right there are a lot for sale and it's too bad, as they seem to have been quite devalued even from the higher end brands. I do think with the recession we are in, people are looking for more creative ways to decorate their houses and so CL will be a good avenue to buy/sell.

Since you just painted them I'd wait till next year too, unless it's really bothering you. For fun check out this site. Pick a chair, then paint it. I'm thinking about painting my white wicker a different color this fall.

I think the problem might be that the Ivory and Heirloom White both have yellow in them which is blending in with the house which also looks like a yellow based color. Bright white would add contrast, BUT I had too much fun on the Maine Wicker site painting different pieces. The combo I ended up liking and surprising myself with is the Marine blue wicker color with the Hot Lime stripe cushions. Still classic looking, but fun!

Thanks for the input. The chairs are pretty old (1920s) and had only been painted once (an even darker cream). I wonder if it was painted at the factory or later on. I had trouble visualizing anything but natural brown or off- white. I shoulda gone with white.

It took me forever to fix the seats (wood framed with springs), find the right foam, pick out fabric, sand, etc. I really wanted to get at least one of my projects done!

Hmmm... I actually like the color, but I see what you mean about how it looks up against your particular house color. It goes well with the porch floor, but not so much with the house. It's not so much that it clashes, but that it just blends in rather than contrasting.

I guess the only solution is to paint the house! :-)

You could also go really bold and paint the wicker a darker color, although I know that's not everyone's cup of tea.

I would probably live with it for now, and play around with accessories. Can you add some more potted trees? How about a rug? Maybe throw pillows? I think if you brought in more color to create contrast, it could all be pulled together without changing the house OR the wicker.

I think it looks really lovely. Once you get some accessories on the tables, some plants set around, and the pillows, you won't even notice it. (Though, to be honest, I don't see any pink either).

I really like the website Natal linked. Some of those chairs look really comfortable!

I am too lazy to repaint at this time, especially since you all have made me feel better. I have too many other unfinished projects. I think some plants and pillows will make a huge difference.

I am toying with the idea of painting the tables a dark ferny green though.

My favorite color to paint wicker is a sage green, or a gray-green.
