so we had to choose a different plan, what do you think about it?
Comments (9)This plan (without seeing the resulting elevations) seems reasonably straight-forward and servicable. It should be possible to create an attractive exterior and avoid the all-too-frequent over-inflated look of many stock plans. That said, the plan has all the usual builder's cliches, from diagonal interior partitions, to a 3-car garage, seperate mud and utility rooms and a walk-though pantry. The front and rear covered porches will provide "dark tunnels" when looking from the interiors, but perhaps you will be in Florida where the sun and heat are excessive for 6 months of the year. If not, perhaps you should reconsider how to use passsive solar energy strategies. The problem with all of these "look at my plan" postings is that we seldom see the elevations and almost never see the site plan, all of which should be considered in how the floor plan is designed. Good luck with your project!...See MoreWhat do you think about unframed paintings?
Comments (28)All of my canvas or panel-based work is either on panels with wood sides that I either stain or paint, or in floater frames. For some reason I buy panels or gallery canvases that are 2" deep - I like the distance from the wall. My woodcut prints are all matted and framed of course. The black floater frames help the 2 go together. Think also, however, about how early modern art - late 19th early 20th century - work is framed in sometimes very ornate traditional frames. It can help a contemporary piece fit in a traditional setting in a very authentic way. Just in the last couple of weeks I saw some new abstract landscape-based paintings by Thomas Batista done this way and there was something very refreshing about it. Wouldn't work for mine though. As kittiemom mentions, the frame is supposed to bring your focus to the work, not to itself. A good framer is a fine thing to find....See MoreWhat do you think about contrast color doors?
Comments (8)Pal, what difference does it make if it's "intentional" or not? We did all of the public area of the house in white beadboard and trim. It goes down the hallway also, then stops at the bedrooms and main bath. Those doors (and inside trim/wainscot, are a dark stain, the original color. I was going to do them white, but I got so sick and tired of the paint fumes I said we'd do it at another time. But now I love the look and am so glad I didn't paint the doors white. And it wasn't intentional....See MoreSo what do you think about adding design elements to backsplash?
Comments (28)The wife and working partner of the tile installer was here yesterday and loved the tile and said it's not out of date. They've been installing a lot of it lately. I know she said this to make me feel better: "With that crackle, it's got kind of a subway look anyway." And the tile designer was very enthusiastic about it too. The photos don't do it justice; it really is pretty. But here's something we didn't expect: the installers are booked to (or through) July!!! But she said they're doing mostly bathrooms, so there might be an open day that comes up where they can do a backsplash. She said her husband will lay the tile in one day and she'll come back and grout it in less than an hour....See MoreLori A. Sawaya
