Wicker Style: Cottage to Cutting Edge
Find Wicker for Every Look, From Classic Porch Chair to Spaceship Daybed
Wonderful wicker...what do you associate with this word? Sipping sweet tea in the summer? Coastal charm? An elephant-shaped side table? A round, ultra-modern daybed? It turns out this material works with every style, whether it be traditional, modern, transitional or contemporary. Whatever shape or color, wicker adds personality to a room.
Warning: I have cheated just a little bit and am using "wicker" to describe a woven furnishings that aren't necessarily made from willow twigs; you may spy a bit of rattan and seagrass mixed into this ideabook. Nevertheless, here are the ways wicker is adding charm to rooms of different styles, inside and out.

Modern covered outdoor space. Wicker is not just for the traditionalist anymore. Check out how well it works on these round chairs in a minimalist space.
Traditional covered outdoor space. This is the kind of charming cottage space my mind conjurs up when I hear the word wicker: a comfortable porch brimming with personality.
Transitional covered outdoor space. Bold stripes and a wide range of textures lets this room straddle the line between traditional and contemporary style.
Side Note: While I like the look, I think the word "transitional" is weak. Does anyone have a better suggestion for describing this kind of style? Let's coin a label for this style together.

Modern outdoor space. The round wicker pieces are a nice contrast to the razor-sharp lines of the architecture.
Transitional outdoor space. The lines on these tightly woven pieces are clean and the pieces are blocky, but the mix of prints on the upholstery and the use of mixing concrete with traditional bricks on the patio keep it somewhere in between traditional and contemporary.
The silhouettes of these chairs extend all the way to the ground, which smooths out the lines. Paired with a simple rectangular table, the ensemble results in a nostalgic yet updated style.
Transitional dining room. The rounded curves of these chairs maintain a traditional wicker furniture style and the moldings are traditional, yet the lack of clutter, light colors, and open space gives it a more contemporary feel.
Contemporary dining room. Here the wicker adds texture and keeps things from being stark.
Industrial modern living room. These woven pieces have clean lines that work well in this industrial loft.
Traditional living room. Vibrantly painted wicker, a floral rug, skirted tables and striped fabric give an overall Dorothy Draper feel to this tropical room.
Transitional living room. This living room has lost the shabby but kept the chic; its material palette has a wide range of textures, but the light walls and ceilings and restrained accessories keep things open and airy.
A seagrass chair is a nice contrast to the upholstered pieces in this room. The bold graphics of the wallpaper, the mix of other prints and the range of textures gives the room an updated, collected look.
Contemporary living room. These oversized round woven pieces are a good match for the massive scale of this glass penthouse.
Traditional kitchen. Traditional wicker adds coastal style to an eat-in kitchen.
Transitional kitchen. This kitchen has country charm and traditional moldings, but the light fixtures, natural light and open feeling are contemporary. The bright wicker chairs add a collected touch.
