Summer custody schedules

Does anyone else switch to a different schedule in the summer?

I am looking forward to our summer schedule. During the school year, DH has SS on Wed/Thurs and EOW. (It's called a 5-5-2-2 split.)

In the summer, it is actually supposed to be divided into 2 week increments; however, DH and BM did not like the idea of 2 week stretches, and I am inclined to agree. 2 weeks is a long time for SS who is used to seeing each of his parents often.

So they decided to do 1 week increments. We did NOT do this last summer, so this is the first summer we've tried it.

I personally think it will be great! Much less moving around for SS, less driving for DH and BM, and we will have the ability to plan more things.

They're doing Sunday at noon to Sunday at noon.

We've got SS and DD signed up for a couple week-long camps. In the past, it's been tough to do this, as we live so far away from BM and it's hard for US to put SS in a camp in our area and then expect her to do some of the driving. So the week-long stretches will be perfect.

We'll be able to take some trips, and not have to worry about whether we only have SS for 2 days that week, etc.

It should just be a really nice, relaxed schedule for everyone.

First of all how are things going LH? Have things gotton better with DH? I remember your post a while back.

Well my schedule with my ex is pretty flexible. He gets 2 weeks uninterrupted visitation during the summer, but because he is in the trades that is his busiest work time and he can never get that time off. So he sticks to the EOW and 1 night a weeek routine with ds. When either of us have anything special going on we switch weekends or days. We have been able to be pretty flexible.

With my skids their bm has no visitation schedule. And with her moving out of state all the time she has not seen the kids during the summer in 3 years. We have allowed them to go out of state to stay with bm's parents for a week before. And bm's family has come into town at least once a year to spend time with the kids. It is kind of nice that way though because then they can be in activities and play with friends all summer without any problems. And scheduling vacations is really easy :)

During the summer, we get SS for 8 weeks, with him spending EOW at his moms. Normally its broken up into 2 4-week chunks and then his mom takes a week in the middle. Before this newest visitation schedule we would get him for 8 solid weeks (which I miss).

Mullenium, Petzold gave you good advice on watering deeply. Another thing to check is how many emitters you have on each plant and how much water they deliver. One gallon-per-hour (gph) emitters are common and when landscapes are installed each plant usually only has one. Keep in mind that one gallon of water will moisten about 1 cubic foot of soil. While that may be enough for small plants, larger shrubs and trees will need much more. If you have 1-gph emitters, I'd recommend you set your timer to run at least 2 hours which will not only moisten the rootball but surrounding soil as well. The longer you can keep moisture in the root zone the less often you will need to water. This time of year watering once a week for 2 hours should be adequate. As temperatures rise above 90 degrees once every 5 days should be good. By June and through the summer apply water once every three days. When nights begin cooling off in September, you can extend the interval in between waterings again. Deep and infrequent is the key. Soggy soils will deprive roots of needed oxygen and promote bacterial and fungal rots especially in summer. Here is a link to watering guidelines in the metro Phoenix area. We went to court in march for CS reduction so she could have more money when she spends time with them ... and "take them more often". Atleast thats what she told the court. Reduction granted on the grounds she spends more time with them. (not holding my breath for that to happen) NO, she doesn't want more time with her kids if she had her way she would pick them up for 2 hours on thursday to "show her parents" shes a good mom and drop them back off. Her family has a big dinner on thursday nights ... they all get together. I know it sounds wacky... I don't have an issue being with the kids when its hubby time. But I didn't quit my job to benefit her being available for drop off the kids whenever she feels like it. I have said it enough times that now hubby "checks in with me" before he tells her yes she can drop them off. Who is it more important to keep happy your ex-wife or ME? Take me out of the visitation schedule. If I weren't here who would she drop the kids off too? would you get out of work the minute she calls to accomodate her? Lets say you had a daycare provider or a teenage babysitter... would she be able to drop off and pick up the kids when she felt like it? or would there be a set schedule? Just a little consideration is all I ask!!

I think this is where my family uses texting. It's basically a way we say little things back and forth without really interupting what else may be going on in the other's day. Sometimes it's just to share something exciting or something silly that we know the other will get a laugh out of. My sister sent me an out of the blue pic of her first ripe tomato in the garden. Could I have lived my day without seeing this? Of course, but sister was so pleased she just reached out to share and knew I'd be happy for her. This is the sister who kills plants because she has forgotten to water or did not plant correctly blah blah. Yep, I was excited as she over that pic as she's really tried hard this year to 'get it right'. Yes, my 34 yr old son gets a head up on highway conditions if we know DS is heading out and DH has just made it in. One drives 35 miles one way to work, the other 20 and both open highways through rural settings. Yep, texts go back and forth 'I made it'. Youngest son, 24, and niece, 25, drive abt 25 miles into work. This winter during our blizard conditions texts went back and forth between us all. Yep, this one in, yep now this one too and on and on it went until as our family as a whole knew we were all safe and sound. It's just my family's way. Nobody finds it being annoying, but than we are a close family and all live within an hourish of each other. And yes, texts went back and forth between GS's BM and us too. Texts went back and forth during my mother's three surgeries this summer. CC'd most and a couple got individual messages. Texts make it so we can stay in touch, write what needs to be said and answers or responses can be sent at receivers leisure. PO1, 'dont forget to wear your coat'? My grandmother use to say to me as I came in without one ' honey, don't you have a coat' and would run to her purse and start getting out cash to buy one LOL. "Of course, Gma I have a closet full I just did not have enough sense to put one on today". Then she'd make me a cup of tea and mumble about how I would catch my death. But I too think the BM in this thread is going overboard and in a way trying to control one house from another. Whether she's doing it deliberately or because she really does not have a clue how this affects her son and the rest of the household, I don't know. With what we've heard of this BM, I tend to think she has some mental issues (perhaps intensified by drinking). I think she obesses over the hours Love tends to SS by Love's self (going to steal her child's affections) and goes nuts in the evenings when Mr Love is home and BM's mind frets over the family unit going on without her. Whatever and why ever, what BM is doing is not normal nor healthy for those she inflicts herself on. I might get a text photo from one of my kids just simply sharing something they though I'd find funny or enjoy.

BY your own words, the requirement that only one parent has the right to sign permission forms is not in the custody order. What you are attempting to have enforced is your interpretation of what the custody order should say. If it doesnt say that specifically, then legally, the school can accept a permission form signed by either parent, since you have joint legal custody. This, of course, is why you seem like the angry controlling person who feels her toes are stepped on. Its not a big deal when I read about it, and I doubt that it is a big deal to the school. THe only way it becomes a problem for them is when you, the stepmom, call up complaining about something that is perfectly legal for them to do. If I were the teacher, I would think you are a whining troublemaker, particularly since the real mom is a volunteer at the school and very involved in the childs life. In short, what I am trying to say is that I think your attitude makes the animosity between your husband and his ex worse, not better. I think you egg it on to an extent. ANd, for the sake of a six year old girl, and for the sake of your own marriage, you are going to need to get a grip on it. Being a step mom is like raising teens. DOnt sweat the small stuff. This definitely is in the small stuff category. WImom and cawfee, dont you just WISH your stepchildrens real moms were half as involved as this real mom is? There isnt anything to complain about here. Both parents are trying to stay active in the childs life. Stepmom in this case shouldnt be stirring up angry sentiments. Oh, I just came back from teacher interviews this evening with my birth sons teachers. I was there, AND his stepfather was there. His real father did a phone interview earlier today. My sons real father has no problem with my husband going to school interviews, since my son lives with us full time, and visits with his real dad. BUT if my ex had a problem, I would have gone myself and discussed what the teacher said at home later with my husband. Also, for what its worth, my husband always checks that its not an issue before he gets involved, as I check before I get involved in areas such as schooling with his children. Its not easy, but someone has to take the high road. If you dont react to little things, if you put the kid first instead of your pride, you find that it becomes much easier in time, and the children do much better. I cant imagine the six year old in this situation, confused about who gets a form and why anyone would be angry about it. Its ALWAYS easier to be angry and blame the other person, than to be placid and accomodating with people you dont like. IN the long run, its worth it .

During the summer, BM is supposed to have SD during the week & DH picks her up Friday until Sunday on the first three weekends each month. (just the opposite of the school year schedule) and we get her back a few days before school starts so we can do the shopping & preparations.

This summer, DH has told SD that if there is something fun going on at her mom's house that she wants to do, she can choose whether she wants to come here for that weekend... as long as it's okay with BM for her to stay.

One of the problems we've had with SD is her being upset that she is missing out on fun stuff there because she has to come here... so DH has left it open to stay with mom to do all the fun things in summer. (because she broods when she is here but thinks she is missing out over there)

Thanks for asking mom2emall.

We are doing well! DH & I are in marriage counseling; I really love our counselor, she is GREAT. My friend recommended her---her older sister and her husband saw this woman 2 years ago and they claim she saved their marriage. So far, she has been great. She is very down to earth and gives good, practical solutions; she is great about teaching us to communicate and to nourish our marriage.

DH has been great. This whole situation has really brought him to his knees in a lot of ways--it's like his eyes have been opened to so many things, and there is a real sense of change in him. He wrote me a letter and read it in counseling---and basically "made ammends" to me for all the ways he's hurt me, and all the things he's done or not done that have contributed to the demise of our relationship. It was good (although sad) to hear him acknowledge his mistakes. I appreciated that so much and I know it can't have been easy for him. At some point, I need to reciprocate.

I am also seeing someone by myself, a psychiatrist. I've come to the conclusion---through myself, but also through the marriage counselor--that I have a lot of emotional pain over being the child of an alcoholic mother and emotional/verbal abuse I went through. I don't blame my parents or the things I went through, but I do recognize their impact on WHO I am now and HOW I carry it with me, and how it affects every relationship I have. I need to work through it so I can LET IT GO.

So I am trying to do a lot of work on myself so I can be a better mother, wife and person.

But marriage wise, we are doing better than ever. I feel very much recommitted to each other, almost like this is the start of things for us. We have a brand new idea of what marriage and family is.

We have A LOT of work to do but it's a good start. :)

Lovehadley I am so happy to hear things are so much better for you! I was so sad after your post about having troubles, it is great to hear the improvements. And I am so happy for you that your dh is seeing how much pain he caused you and acknowledging that.

I am also very happy to hear that things are so much better for you LH, are you two still living separately? How are the kids handling that?
Our custody changed back in September to week on week off same as what you are going to and we are looking forward to it this summer as it makes vacation planning much easier. BM just informed us she is moving 3 hours away so DH and BM are going back to court we are trying for custody of the boys our mediator is suggesting we get the two boys and she gets 14 year old girl so I guess we will see!
Again glad to hear things are going better for you guys!
