Boy, that photo is certainly lacking! LOL! Hopefully you'll be sent a better one. I think if it's in good condition, it's definitely worth the price. $50? You can't buy a little rickety wicker chair at Pier 1 for $50!

Auntjen - Do you know anything about antiques like this? I was hoping to get some input from someone that might think the sofa's are worth more. :)

I have asked if the entire sofa is in good condition...not just the wicker which was a mistake in my first email. Also, now that I am thinking about it, the sofa may be too low for my existing porch furniture. I wanted something to go under the window - shown.

Newhome - That wicker couch (what I can see of it) is gorgeous! I'd snap it up in an instant! Get in your car, girl! Go! Go!

It looks like it would be an excellent match for that space. I would be concerned that it would not hold up well outdoors - but for that price, I would certainly take a look.

The weave in the wicker looks old to me. Linda C. is an expert on antiques and is usually in the antiques forum. Bet she could tell you a lot about it. But as other's has said, it's only fifty bucks.

And with new cushions, it will look amazing.

I think my enthusiasm of a deal got ahead of me. I feel bad because the owner has now sent to me multiple photos. I like the couch above, but not the white couch.

Additionally, the couch is - according to his words "its about 6 feet long about three feet high and about 2 feet deep". That's just too long for my space. I cannot think of another place to put it, but I do hate to pass up a bargain. I think that the cane back is what makes the sofa - without the cushions. Unfortunately, it appears that the bottom cushion is fixed and that would cost too much to recover (an expense that I don't need to take on).

It will take me a while to save and upload the photos, but I want y'all to see what I feel I must pass up. :(

Hmmm. They must have switched photos in the ad. The ad says "wicker back and wooden arm rest". The one in the photo is a tubular metal one that does not have wooden arms nor does it have any wicker.

The ad is not clear on exactly what they are selling. There is caning in the one in the photo but the pic is so blurry that you cannot see if there is any damage to it. It does not show if the seat cushions are built in/attached making it difficult to reupholster, or it they are "loose" and can be exchanged with ready made ones. There is what looks like a footboard to a bed hiding the legs of the settee. If this is the one they are selling I would offer to take it off their hands for a lot less than $50. It looks like it is taking up room in their basement/garage and not being used in their home. I'm sure they want it out.

I disagree, Dilly. I think those arms are indeed wooden. They actually kinda remind me of vintage rattan. And I think the seller is using the term "wicker" when they really mean "caning." But I don't think they've misrepresented the piece.

I'm sorry you think you'll have to pass it up, NHB! I know that let-down, disappointed feeling when you realize something's just not quite going to work in your space.

I squinted and looked real hard with my old eyes on my crappy secondhand monitor, and I think you are correct AuntJen. They probably are wood and maybe even rattan.

Anyway, I see that newhomebuilder and I cross posted and she has opted not to get it.

LOL! My old eyes are actually feeling young and spry today. I have new glasses: My very first pair of bifocals. And for once, I can see clearly.

Nothin' says "little old lady" quite like your first pair of bifocals ... ::sigh::

The wood seems like a hard wood like mahogany.

At my suggestion, the seller has added additional photos to the link, but I have added here, the ones he sent me for your closer inspection.

I almost feel like buying the one and then re-selling.

WOW! If I had the room for them, or even one of them, I'd be jumping at them. I can just imagine the potential with the right fabrics, and some coordinating rich throw pillows. It could become very Ralph Lauren-ish.

I don't think their hideous and with the right fabric, I think they could look nice. BUT, I do not see them as being very comfortable.

To be honest, your porch looks great as it. You have alot of pieces out there and I think a couch - especially one as long as these, would look too crowded.

Do you need more seating or are you just wanting something in that spot? IMHO, it looks lovely as is.

Yes, I need something to fill that space. We had two side chairs last year, but moved them outside and they look too bad to move back on the porch.

What I would really like is a little bistro set so that DH and I can eat outside without having to go OUTSIDE on the patio. I can't find anything that matches what I have.

They are great! I would have been over there--bought first--asked questions later. Then, if I couldn't make them work, cleaned them up, taken pretty pictures with them on my pretty porch instead of your modern wicker and re-sold. Done.

I think the white one may be worth it. The other looks like it needs reupholstering and has pressed cane (ask for pics of the *back* of the back). The white one may be woven cane (easy to fix if there is a hole). It also has more interesting arms. I would not put either one outside.

I used to have one like that (with matching armchair that I was too poor to have springs redone). I couldn't sell them - antique dealer said they were 70's French Provincial even though I knew they were a good 50 yrs older than that knowing the lady (house) my parents bought them from. The wood was dyed, not stained. I ended up giving them to Salvation Army when DD was born and we needed to move (her current) antique bedroom set to the room where we had the caned set. The back of the couch was not comfy, and moved too much. It *was* pretty, though.

I think they both need reupholstering and the arms are what I didn't like about the white. lol

Here is the caning on the white sofa. Looks the same to my eye, but I am not an expert.

Sorry the couches didn't work for you Newhomebuilder, but can I just come and live on either of your porches?!! They are both gorgeous! I promise I'm not much trouble, just a glass of iced tea and maybe a cookie and a good magazine and I'd be set! ;-)

Ooh, sorry, didn't really look at last pic of (used to be) white cushions. But I still can't tell from closeup if it's woven or pressed cane. The pink one looks like new (replaced) pressed cane - it's lighter and I can see the spline in the groove. The white one could be either, but just b/c of the mottling I'd say it's old (original?) cane, probably woven. I still like the arms (though the other has nice arms too), and I'm partial to that leg style too.

We use a small table with two chairs on our patio, just outside the sunroom. It is a great spot for two. Keep in mind when you are looking, that you can paint and change the color. What we have is not a matched set. My grandparents had a very old wrought iron set - a table and 4 chairs. I didn't want that table and really didn't want 4 chairs so I took two. Hubby painted them dark green - I was going to use them as extra seating. I just happened upon a small, glass top table trimmed in - you got it - dark green.

Keep looking, you'll find the right thing.

ajsmama - You have a better eye than me. lol I would think that the older caning would be brittle. Both backs look like they have been on a while.

I'm with Kat .. your porches are just beautiful as is! What wonderful places to relax.

Older caning does get brittle - but if it's woven you can pick out the broken pieces and reweave it (even if it's just 1 strand). Pressed cane you'd have to replace the entire back. Reminds me - I have to finish caning the seat of my mom's rocker I started a few years ago (before we built this house and I got busy with my own stuff).

But I don't think you need anything else on that beautiful porch. If you think you do, check over on Furniture - I was looking through posts since my Mom is thinking of getting a set from HD for her sunroom. Costco looks like they get good quality at wholesale prices (wonder if BJs is the same?), Lowes, HD, Wally, Target are not highly regarded.

We don't have a COSTCO. Also, we got our modern brown wicker at Target. :) This is the third season we have had the wicker and it is holding up beautifully. May have to replace the cushions next year because of fading, but I am not crazy about them anyway.

Just to clarify, the white porch was my porch in the previous house. It was beautiful, and I miss it dearly. The wicker is in my basement.
