Lampshades Shine for Quick Decor Change
Give in to the swap-out urge with an accessory that doesn't cost a fortune and has a high design impact
I would put lampshades in the same category as pillows and bathroom towels — you know, the "stuff I like to switch out" category. OK, so I get a little anxious sometimes, especially when the season changes, to see new colors, patterns and shapes. My sweet husband is very tolerant of all my design obsessions, but I think redecorating every season would push him over the edge.
Now a lampshade change — that's a different story. Changing out lampshades is much more doable and has a surprisingly high design impact.
Lampshades come in so many shapes, sizes and colors. Are you up for a new one? Take a look at how these designers are going beyond white lampshades to brighten up their spaces.

Use patterned lampshades to bring together a palette. The dash of citron in this lampshade and nightstand make great partners. This classic drum shade is perfectly petite, allowing it to be placed close to a wall.
Consider switching out white for black. A classic black shade adds so much elegance to a space. Here this black lampshade sets off the geometric pattern of the headboard.
Bring a splash of color to a lampshade and pillows. Pairing up a common color on sofa pillows and a lampshade is quick and easy decorating. These two things can easily be switched out together when you are feeling like a quick change.
Consider lampshades with trim or lining. Just this small detail on the lampshade gives this space a fresh vintage vibe.
Consider switching out boring overhead lighting for an oversize lampshade with pattern. Here this drum-style shade adds all the personality to the room. Notice how the pattern in the drum shade picks up the detail in the rug in the background.
Use a lampshade to introduce a surprise color. What would this room look like if that great turquoise lampshade weren't there? Not as much fun, in my opinion. Look at your rooms this way. Is there a lampshade somewhere you can switch out for a splash of unexpected color?
The nonlampshade! Is this lampshade really there? Whatever it is, I like it. This type of fixture creates a great minimalist look, and it's a good solution when you need light but want the view outside to be the focus.
This lampshade has a fun feather pattern that complements the deep reds on the sofa. Don't be afraid to mix patterns as well as colors; it makes things more interesting. I love the shape of this lampshade on the organic profile of the lamp base.
