Baldwin is nice. I believe Home Depot carries some of their open stock items!

We are doing something similar and I'm purchasing from Emtek. A few years ago, when our GC was replacing some exterior locks for us with new ones I'd ordered from Emtek, he remarked that this was a really good piece of hardware. I just ordered some interior door knobs & locks from them in the flat black finish, don't know if they carry brushed nickel.

You could also look at Rejuvenation. We have some lighting fixtures from them. Their service and products are really very good. Their available finishes match throughout their lines of lighting, door hardware and other metal stuff.

We are thinking of doing this, too. One thing we want to do is change from knobs to levers before we get too old to open doors using the knobs-LOL! Seriously. It is amazing how things change as we age and we are only nearing 60!

Same here lol All of our doors in our new/old house have ugly brass knobs. We want glass knobs with nickle silver finish. Everything I find is so expensive and we need new works for the knobs too. I can find the knobs at a fair price but just have no clue how to even do a search for the inside parts. I will be interested in seeing responses here. We replaced ours with Emtek levers as well a few months ago and are very happy. you can get them over the internet at better prices.

Can anyone enlighten me a bit about interior hardware and what makes one brand better than another? I'm talking about closet/bedroom door hardware not front door stuff.

For instance, why not Kwikset or Schlage?

I bought Baldwin and love them! I decided to go with cheaper locks, and I put Baldwin along side the cheaper ones and there was a big difference in quality - Baldwin was heavier and had a much better shine. I decided to do everything Baldwin and am happy with the look.

We went with Baldwin ORB egg knobs with rosettes throughout the house and I'm glad that we did. newyorking is right - they're much heavier and substantial than the less expensive hardware.

I found mine for a discount online after some extensive searching and cost comparison. The online store turned out to be my local Ace Hardware so I was able to pick them up and save on shipping.

We have had Baldwin in our home for 23 years. They still look amazing and we will be ordering them soon for our new house.

Here is another question to go along with door hardware, do you put "locks" on all bedroom doors? My husband seems to think they are not needed but I think guests should especially have privacy (not to mention us in the Master Bedroom, too). This will be a river home.

Next issue.....do your door handles match your faucets in the bathrooms....both finish and style? I'm thinking I want to change the faucets from brass to polished chrome but I don't think I would do polished chrome door handles. Would you do brushed chrome or brushed nickel. To me BN has a yellowish tone...not really silver. Are these two finishes more fitting with a modern look rather than a traditional look? We just did a basement powder room with the chrome and I'm liking it alot. Do all the bathrooms have to have the same faucets...stylewise and finish? We have 3 full baths, a 3/4 (basement) and a powder room. I'm thinking the upstairs baths may, but the basement bath has a vessel sink with the polished chrome, PR has a pedestal sink so may not?

what did you all do when you changed your hardware?

Also what colors do you have your woodwork? painted, stained? Ours is painted Dover White and it will be staying that way.

On issue 1, I decided to go with Emtek hardware after reading a lot of reviews. I was able to get it online for about $48 for a privacy set with an upgraded rosette which in the local stores were $150/set. Then the company abruptly went out of business (LOCKHOUSE). So I have one, which actually arrived damaged. But anyway, Emtek is addressing. I found another site with similar prices.

I also looked at baldwin and found a good price at gtlocks.com but my husband preferred the look of the emtek (only from photos) so I guess we are going that route as I was indifferent. The other variable is the baldwin exterior hardware is NOT CHEAP. Like $250+ for each set regardless of discount sites- as we need several, that was a deterrant for me.

As for the bedroom issue, yes bedroom doors need locks. Guests or not, IMO.

Yes, our bedroom and bathrooms have privacy knobs with locks on the inside.

On that note - keep the passkey handy if you have a 6 year old who likes to throw tantrums and lock herself inside the room! Maybe I should have put the lock on the outside :-D

Our Baldwin exterior door hardware was not cheap, but we bought a mortise lockset because of the weight and size of our doors and it cost much more than a standard set.

Any takers on the style and color issue....should all the faucets in all the bathrooms be the same style? Do the door handles need to match the faucets?

All our bathroom and bedroom doors have locks. We will be keeping them that way.
