Crown Molding in Bathroom

Any decorating rule about this, either yay or nay?

I am extremely fortunate to have a source of free skilled labor to do crown throughout the house. My son tackled the public areas last summer and turns out to be quite talented. His woodwork skills are top notch and we team up; once he finishes the installation, I do the finish work of caulking seams/nail holes and final prep and paint. What we have done hasreally come out beautifully and I LOVE the look.

Anyway, this summer he is going to do the bedrooms and we've been discussing doing both bathrooms as well. These are very small rooms and the crown would stop at the bath/shower enclosures which are tiled to the ceiling.

This morning I mentioned the plan to my husband and he was surprised about the bathroom molding, say he hasn't heard or seen that done.

So...any opinions? Anyone have crown in a bathroom?

I have crown molding in all my bathrooms. I do not have tile to the ceiling, so I didn't have to figure out a transition.

The crown molding in all of the house EXCEPT the bathrooms is 7". In the bathrooms, the carpenter suggested a more modest 3" or 4" because the bathrooms are teeny. He thought the larger crown would overpower the room, and I had to agree with him.

It is not noticable that I have 2 different sizes.

How wonderful that you have such a talented and helpful son!

We also have wide moldings in our bathrooms...even in the closets.

I don't think I have ever had a bathroom without it.

Sure, you people may all have crown in your bathroms, but do you chair rail like I have in my powder room? LOL I gotta say, it's a very dinky powder room on the first floor which makes the chair rail look that much more comical. We're re-doing the powder room along with the kitchen reno, so the chair rail will be coming out. Honestly, I should take some photos of this horrific space just so that I have evidence that it ever existed :)

With that photo, I'd say without a doubt if you're going to run crown in the bath run it over the shower as well. I recommend you not use MDF crown. If you go with wood, I recommend you not use finger-jointed due to the open nature of the shower. Depending on the quality of the finger jointed wood, repeated moisture swings can cause the joints to break, resulting in lines telegraphing through the paint at every glue line, which can be every 8" to 18". For solid wood crown, back prime the wood (meaning prime the back of the crown as well as the front) before installing it, I recommend an oil primer. If going with a synthetic (foam) molding, that will be most stable moisture-wise. It'll also be the least worry in regards to mold/mildew. The only limitation is that it comes in 8' lengths, so if you have a run longer than 8' you'll have a scarf joint somewhere along the run of molding. Not a worry though. Easy to do. Mongo

I have it in my kitchen (9' x 12") and bath (6' x 9"), and it looks beautiful, but it's not large or ornate (the bathroom is a small cove), and it's painted the same color as the walls (at least the bathroom will be if I ever get that far). To my eye, this makes the ceilings look higher because my eye doesn't stop at the bottom of the crown, it goes to the top. I'll be interested to see what other people think.

Thanks everyone. EG3d, the problem is the stairs (below). The only way to fix that problem would be to put an elevator in the stairwell and remove the stairs. But this chair was more of a hassle than anything else I've had to move because it was too big to get through the doorway between the kitchen and dining room and too big to get through the doorway from the kitchen to the patio (which is where it would have to get to in order to be brought in through the bathroom window). So that's why they had to go over the house from the front and drop it down the back. They do this all of the time in the city because of how these houses are. Because it's historic, you're not allowed to change the front at all, and because I'm a traditionalist and do not want to mess with my house too much, I would never get rid of the stairs.

Eight foot ceilings with I think it's 5" crown throughout most of the house. The original bath has 2.5" and although it looks ok, I think it would look better with the larger molding.

I recently had crown installed in two of my bathrooms and I love it. Really changed the overall appearance so much. Don't know why I never used it in there before.

Wow, thanks everyone! Peachie, your pictures are especially useful as my bathroom is likely closer to what seems to be your room size rather than newhomebuilder's, although NHB's does make me green with envy (as does her whole house for that matter :).

Looks like crown is not only permissible but quite appealing. My poor son just got 2 more rooms added to the list.

RIP, my poor babies are like 5x7 and 5x6 or so. This is a 1970s house. They no longer look or feel as small. All my friends can't believe the change. I could not afford a remodel, only a refresh.

Your son should be so lucky :-)).

ajsmama, I think no matter where you put crown, you get added value. I also had it installed in LR/DR/hall and foyer-I think I went crown and chair rail molding mad-LOL.

I think it would make that small PR sing and say welcome-come on in for a bit. You cannot go wrong. Do it and let us see. In fact, why not start there.

I have crown in my 3x6 powder room and love it :) It's a small room with several wow's so you don't notice the size LOL (ok hard to hide that) I also have it in all other bathrooms. Most of the house is 3" (8' ceilings) but in the master it's five

Our crown dies into the tile "frame" of the shower so I thought maybe that might help give you an idea of how it will look...it's not the best pic but it shows the crown on the left:
