Choose an Unexpected Color for Your Trim
Go Beyond Glossy White Molding for a Room With Distinction
Every room says something, and the details often put an exclamation point at the end of that statement. This is especially true when it comes to the trim and molding in a space. These architectural details can make the biggest impact, depending on their scale and how they are treated. Applying a color or stain to your molding will instantly give your space distinction. If you've been thinking outside of the usual glossy white approach, here are some tips for picking the right color for your trim.
I'm seriously loving the lavender trim in this bedroom. This is a great example of how you can use an unexpected, lighthearted color for the molding even in a traditional space. Look how the linens on the bed tie in with the windows and doors. Brilliant.
Sometimes a dramatic space calls for dramatic details. In a bathroom with fancy wallpaper, an ornate mirror and dazzling red tile, the high-gloss black trim definitely adds the exclamation point on a space that says '"va va voom!"
Natural stained molding is not just for rustic, casual homes. It can add a very elegant touch to luxurious spaces, too. A reddish stain will coordinate very well with traditional cherry furniture.
Charcoal gray molding is an excellent way to bring a contemporary flair to a home. But don't stop with the window and door frames. Painting the stairs and doors with the same color will create a unified look.
Wainscoting painted with a warm, creamy hue is a sure way to make a room more cozy. In a space with an abundance of earth tones, honey beige trim creates a nice flow and ties all of the furnishings together.
In this space, slate gray wainscoting creates a sense of movement as your eye travels up, down and around the staircase. This effect would not look as impressive had the color been more subtle.
In children's rooms, I believe that anything goes (within reason). In this room, the red baseboard and faux crown molding bring an excitement to the space that any boy or girl could love. Using complementary colors like red and green allows both colors to look even more remarkable.
