Dentil Molding
Notched rectangular wood blocks carved into molding give it a toothy appearance
Dentil is a decorative molding using rectangular blocks evenly spaced. Mostly used in classical architecture, dentil molding gets its name from the Latin "dens," meaning "teeth." The band of dentils can project underneath the cornice along the roofline of a building or appear in ceilings, furniture or built-ins.
Dentil molding is used along the mantel of this fireplace.
In this kitchen, built-in cabinetry is topped with dentil molding.
This Victorian has many interesting details, but note the dentil molding that is located above the frieze of carved swags and also along the roofline.
