Please help me -- console here?

Hi there, am hoping to solicit advice on acquiring a console table... am looking to be a little more eclectic in my choices and I thought about putting an Asian inspired table behind my sofa in the family room with two ceramic stools...You can see the back of my sofa from the living room and I hate the way this looks, so I want to make it look more appealing. Here is the space I need to put the table in:

I like this look, but it is too busy and tall:

I like the clean lines of this, but am concerned that it may be too bulky...

Table needs to be no higher than 30" (back of sofa)and no deeper than 15". Also can't do glass or glass as I have 2 little boys : )

Also thinking of maybe doing a bench? What do you think??

If it were my house, I would be looking at pieces that had a back and a front - doors that opened. It would hide the line where the sectional comes together.

But to answer your question, not the last one is not too bulky. I'm not sure a bench in that location makes much sense, but stools under an open table would.

What is the width of those tables? I'm thinking that you want one fairly long so that it covers about 2/3 of the sofa back.

hI Greywings, yes, I am annoyed by that seam and part of the console's job would be to detract or hide it, but don't want to do a buffet type table as there is lots of wood pieces around it (I took a picture in front of another buffet, but alas it is too high for the couch). I thought the stools would work to camaflogue the seam.

My $.02 FWIW: I am not a fan of uneven cabinet heights. Also, you can get more storage if you take all the cabinets to the ceiling (you can never have too much storage in a kitchen). It's a 10' ceiling, so plenty of room to do stacked cabinets. Don't worry that the uppers will be too high. Most women need a stepstool for anything above the second shelf in any case. Stacked uppers are a great place to store things you seldom use, but still need to put somewhere. Or, you can have the upper stack be glass doors, which is pretty. Taking the cabinets to the ceiling will also do away with the clutter on top that I see there (I realize it's a model, but people tend to want to fill that empty space...), and do away with the dirt that collects on top of the cabinets when they do not go to the ceiling. Hard to tell from photo, but hood looks like it may be too high above the cooktop. Ideally, the bottom of the hood should be 30-34" above the cooktop for best capture of the smoke and grease. Too high, and you are giving the smoke and grease more opportunity to waft elsewhere rather than be pulled in by the exhaust. I like the glass cabinets, but would not do mullions in them. They can look busy, and it is annoying when you see the shelves not line up with the mullions. I would either do some pretty glass pattern like rippled glass, or clear glass with a bevel. The bevelled glass will likely cost more than the mullioned glass, but I am just not a fan of mullions. Single-bowl sink not double. I don't like fridges next to ovens, as the oven heat forces the fridge to work harder. But many people do this, so it's likely OK. Is there landing space for things going out of/into the fridge and oven? Or do you have to rely on the island for landing space? That dark granite will show every speck and is very reflective. I would either get it honed so as not to be so reflective, or choose a granite that is not black like that.

It's like the old recipe exchange, earring exchange, etc. It's like a pyramid, if 36 people send one thing to one person, and they get moved up the list and so on. Eventually it falls apart, and not everyone gets the 36 bottles of wines, pairs of earrings etc. The person who organizes it always wins, they're the name at the top of the list.

Debra, I think it's time for me to eat my shorts. Yes, I agree with you, I think you have identified 'Orange Marmalade' for me but I'll make the final confirmation once I see the colour of the flowers. Still not sure though about the ID of the other one. They have started to put up scapes and buds which is on the early side for 'June' perhaps -expect more like late July- but I have to make allowance for the fact I forced them into leaf by taking the bare roots and potting them up indoors so they'd have a decent showing for the first plant sale of the year (none of them sold, BTW). I'll post pictures f the flowers soon as they open and I hope they'll last long enough to maybe get a side by side picture with the flowers on my real 'June', though I have my doubts they'll hand in there long enough. I think a console table would look good there and add another place for lamps. The darker tone would tie in nicely with your armoire. If you are using an Asian console, I would probably not use Asian stools unless you have other Asian accents in the room. I would use padded cubes or X-leg stools instead.

I think the table you posted (dark, simple one) might look nice with a couple of Asian stools under it. I also think they would help to hide the seam. I am linking one that is more inexpensive than most and pretty, I think.

I have the same situation, now that I have moved my couch away from the wall. I don't like the way the separation looks either. However, to temporarily remove the line/separation I have placed a throw over it. Mine has some fringe and it hangs about 8" from the floor - leaving it less noticeable than before. I have been looking for an antique sofa table/console with 4 legs or . . . two front legs with a solid back (so that I can place two box stools under the table). With a huge family, I need the extra seating. Also, a back to the table will also hide the lamp cords I will eventually get. Hope this helps
