Ottoman as coffee table opinions needed, please

I am purchasing a tufted leather ottoman to use as a coffee table/ottoman for my sitting room. There are tables at each end of the sofa and a table next to a chair, so most of the time it would be used as an ottoman when I read in that room. The ottoman comes in a 16" and 18" height. It will also have casters so I can move it closer to my chair when needed. I had originally chosen the 16" but have asked the designer to hold off on placing the order until I call her back. What height would you choose and why? Thanks much.

can you set up a mock ottoman? Test the 2 different heights. Go with what is most comfortable for you. Last thing you want is for your legs to be too high when you prop them up on it. And that is one of the best things about an ottoman coffee table.

I did that yesterday and either height is comfortable. I wasn't sure if the 16" would look strange since it's not "standard" coffee table height. Do you think it will look OK?

I would prefer the smooth leather top for ease of care, although I like the "clubby" look of the tufted one. Tufted ottomans that are actually used (for feet and dogs in our house) get so much dust and stuff in the depressions around the buttons, they are difficult to clean. In decades of having houses looked after by two different housekeepers, their ONLY complaint was that tufted ottoman. We replaced it. I don't especially care for the combination of leather and zebra print. Either is great on its own, though.

Actually, it's your sofa on the left facing the chairs and possibly the love seat that need a table. The sofa facing the love seat has tables on each side therefore one in front isn't really necessary. You could take the table from your last layout, rotate it and place it closer to the sofa facing the chairs. Place a small table (very small) or garden stool to the right of the love seat for that person to place a drink on. Another option would be two storage ottomans that can be moved around depending on where someone is sitting. If the tops are firm enough a glass can be set on them when your feet aren't!! ;)

This sounds like a lot of dark. As a proud mud puppy mom (photo included because, well...), I'd encourage you to think about adding easy to clean fabrics in a lighter color. Maybe a white leather ottoman to complement the white pillows you're planning to add? Or something made from a performance fabric, like the stuff Sunbrella makes? We've had a light grey couch for awhile that is a not-so-resilient IKEA fabric, but it's machine washable. That's another direction to go in for a fabric ottoman. I would encourage you to think lighter for the rug, too. We have a light grey, cream, and taupe rug with a lot of irregularity and variety to it, kind of likethis one, but we bought it for a lower price several years ago at HomeGoods. It has survived multiple moves, a renovation, and potty training and it's still nice enough to go into a formal living room space. It looks modern and adds a lightness to the room. Follow up: the rug I included came up when I did a search for modern industrial area rug. You could also look at distressed area rugs.

Mine are 16 1/2" high, slightly lower than the seat cushion and they look fine and are comfortable. Believe me, no one is going to come into your home and walk out in shock and horror because your ottoman is 16" or 18". Sounds like you want the 16" so go for it. It will be fine.

Mine is 16" and my sofa seat cushion is 19". It feels comfortable.

The sofa is 19-20" high and my chair is 21" if that changes anyone's opinion. Thanks so much for the responses.

This is just another example of why most of the rooms in my home are not quite finished. I have "analysis paralysis"!
