We have a FAQ for this forum, but I do not know who maintains it now. You might want to check with iVillage to ask about posting the tutorials to the FAQ page.

Teresa, I forget who was doing the FAQ page before iVillage came into the picture, but I remember that she posted she was trying to contact them because she couldn't get into it and they didn't respond. Possibly someone here, with much more computer knowledge than I have, could set up a site for tutorials and tips and techniques.

I did a search for such a page, but didn't really find anything that I thought would fit the bill. They seemed to all be single tutes and not a 'site' for a lot of tutorials although Quilting Passion has a few.

The problem with having forum for them means they would, again, fall off the page.

I wouldn't want to see tutorials on a separate forum. I think instruction is the essence of this site. The Q & A, the finished photos and the tuts are all quite informative for quilters. These are the topics that draw me to this site. I don't know how others feel. I wouldn't want to jump between 2 forums. Unfortunately, this is why I rarely visit the gallery until reminded it's there.

Teresa, I hope they allow you to do that! I really think the FAQ page would be the way to go because all the tutorials would be in one place and readily accessible.

I wouldn't want to see tutorials on a separate forum.I really like to know why everyone wants to make seperate forums for different quilt activities I don't want this to sound like I am trying to be smart or caddy but I really like to know why????????????? I can not see jumping from site to site...........and as far as being readily accessible I don't think so....I don't know how others feel but anymore I hate to visit this forum because somebody is always trying to change something or complain about something.....related to quilting but just not to their taste! I think the more the topics the more others will relate to the forum.......hiding things to another site anyone just browsing this site would never really know how active members are here..........Well I am off my soap box..I have enough frustration at home I really don't need it here!

You stated your opinion very well, Red!

If we are able to put our tutorials or classes on the FAQ section, they will stay there....forever and always be available. If they remain on the posts, eventually they will scroll off waaaaay down in the pages and you'd have to do a search to find them and we all know....people don't like to have to search for things. LOL!

We'll see what iVillage Admin. says...

The bad thing about it after 6 months I village tends to delete old topics so would they delete the tutorials too.?

Remember all the $##$%&&*&^% we went through when we asked for (some did) and got the Conversations page? You could put the tutorils there if you want and then post here and ref that they are there.
They don't bother me on this front site. But if you want to keep them all together I'd use the conversation page who reads it anyway? not many and it wouldn't involve the company setting up a new site. IMHO

I appreciate that the tutorials wouldn't be lost on a FAQ page but I had the opinion that that was what this forum was all about; teaching, sharing,learning. I would find it a loss to have to look elsewhere as I might miss something that interest me. If they could be incorperated in the manner of the Gallery that wouldn't be too bad if it were mentioned in a post that a new class was opening up. Or would it be possible to archive them? Jayne

I would think a tutorial would first be posted here and then archived. The quilting FAQ page is listed next to the Post Message tab at the top of the page and the items that are posted there now have been there for years. Imo, it's time for an update. For those who don't wish to look, that's fine.....same as the gallery and conversation area. It's all a matter of choice, but I think it would be nice for newbees to be able see what tutorials were given before they were here.

I'm with you Red! Why change something that's not broken? I'm enjoying Teresa's lessons on scrap quilts right where they are. It seems that if there weren't swaps & tutorials there wouldn't be much else on this forum. :o)

I would like to see the tutorials in a safe spot where we can refer back to them and they won't be lost in 6mo. Our wonderful instructors are spending a lot of time preparing them.
Teresa, your idea sounds the best so please let us know what you find out.

I don't mean a different site for a forum. I mean this one with Tutorials as one of the titles, like sewing, quilting.

Am I missing something? Nothing would change except that the info we choose would be archived in the FAQ and not lost.

You are correct, Sharon. If we had a Tutorials area in the same format as the Discussions, Conversations, and Gallery the postings could be moved down and off the main page. But if we can get them in the FAQ section, they will be there and not get lost.

Even forums that are more busy than Quilting do not have a Tutorials page, but some (such as Cooking and Winter Sowing) have extensive FAQ sections.

I would like to have a tutorial forum, if we could post the information on both discussions and tutorial then use the discussion thread for follow-up postings and post only further instructions on the tutorial side (does that make sense(haven't finished my coffee yet)? I do hate to hunt forever for something only to find it has dropped of the end of the thread. If only the information part was posted on the tutorial side then it should stay there and be easier to find.

I've looked at the FAQa How would they be stored there? I thought FAQs were for the simple explanations of terms etc. FAQa means frequently asked questions not how-to's and instructions for certain things IMHO

You are correct, Minnie, but at least if the tutorials were posted on the FAQ page they would not scroll off because no posts could be made to them.

I've looked at other FAQ on other forums at this site and some of them have a great deal of detail on various topics relating to the subject matter.

I usually copy the tutorials to a PDF file or MSWord and keep them on my computer. However, I have used the clippings for a lot of other ideas and such. I wasn't aware that they disappear after a while.

I do the same thing Geri that way I know I have them!Why depend on a site to keep them.If you really want the Tutorials it makes sense to either print it or save it!

What happens if the info is wrong? (not that I saw any, I was just wondering)
It would be nice to know that some instructions could live here forever.

IMO, the tutorials could be first posted in Discussions so any questions that arise could be answered. Then the class could be added to the FAQ in the form of a question and answer so the information could be referenced by current members and any new members in the future.

In many of the GW/THS forums, there are questions that frequently come up on a regular basis thus the FAQ page was born. On my Cooking forum, there is an extensive breadmaking class broken down in segments, a section on cooking techniques, and another on frequently requested recipes. And that FAQ page is not even in the form of Q and A.

While I save and print the Tutorials to my own computer I realise that many other may not. I think it is a great idea to have the Tutorials in an archive so that not only present members but future members will have access to them.
Teresa, I appreciate the time and effort you are making to get GW to let you do this. You and the other teachers have spent many hours preparing the lessons for us and it would be a shame not to have them on permanent record.

It is hard to make changes as we all tend to get stuck in a rut. But if it is for the better of the forum, I think it should be done.

I don't think they belong on the FAQs. They are someone's own tutorial and there maybe others who have a tutorial for the same thing. Nice of them to share them with us here on the forum. After a tutorial is finished then perhaps the author could combine them into one thread and post that to the discussion link or tutorial link if we ever have one. While it is in process I think it belongs over here. JMHO
