Hi. I am posting to the boards for the first time but have enjoyed reading them for awhile. I am hoping you can give me some ideas for my foyer. A little background. We bought this house from my in-laws and it was built in 1968. My foyer is two story and has the stairs in it. It originally had red velvet flocked wallpaper that was put onto the dry wall. The wallpaper was painted over at some point and it did make a big improvement. You can still see the texture design that was the velvet part. I am trying to figure out some kind of texture treatment that could be done to update the look of the walls. There is no way to take the wallpaper down without redoing all the drywall. The wallpaper goes all the way to the second floor so it is a large area to do something with. Thanks for any help

Welcome out of lurkdome syoungtx. Newhomebuilder is right. Pictures would help. A couple ideas off the top my head without seeing it though would be to use a double woolie roller with a deep color and ivory. The ivory will tone the deep color down and the two tone woolie affect could hide the design in the velvet.
In the link below you can click on the finished example to see a larger picture of it. I've done this in our kitchen, half bath and sunroom and love it. Corners are a bit tough so I'd recommend doing them first. I think it says to do them last, but after seeing how bad it looked I did them first and then rammed the roller into the corners and they looked soooo much better.

It does sound like an active space. If you had seating, would anyone actually spend time sitting there? If so then chairs or a bench would be nice. But, if not, why not try a bureau or sideboard in the space. Most Bureaus are about 3 ft high, either piece would offer good storage and you could have fun decorating the top, lamps. pictures etc. Maybe you could even paint the piece for a pop of color? Before painting, sheetrock over niche. It is dated and not functional. Then paint. Remove carpet from stairs and paint black and white and do an interesting carpet runner. Stairs without carpet are noisy and slip probe. Your new flooring will be fabulous! I would select large black and gold piece for entry. I would paint and not do any wood elements on walls. Concentrate on stairs, carpeting for stairs,entry fixture. Be careful about adding more wood elements.

As this is the first thing you and others see as soon as you open the front door its the statement introduction to the house. Is there a style or general theme the rest of the house has or that you want to make? It can sum up the style if the house, be a formal space or more casual, literally make statements with signs or a combination of statement with pictures. With what you have in there and you railing I think white shiplap with a white shelf that has black framed white matted black and white family pictures would be beautiful and bright and welcoming.

Unless you want to watch a tv from a dining table, you have zoned yourself to a postage stamp sized seating area. There is nothing that can not be moved.... "The dining table cannot be moved, there is a chandelier centered above." So that is wrong. There is no need for a partition wall either. You define areas with rugs... Put all the dimensions of everything on that plan above, add below and come back : )

syoungtx, does the "tx" indicate TX? I found that in the Dallas/Fort Worth area textured walls are a really big deal. And it seems the more expensive the house, the more heavily textured the walls are. In fact, many that I saw when we were house hunting were textured and then glazed to highlight the texturing.

If you are in Texas, pick out the biggest real estate company in your area. Check their website for open houses and go looking through some of the ones in the more expensive neighborhoods to see what sort of texturing was done on the walls.

I will try to get some pictures up later today. I know it is hard to offer any advice without pictures.
Yes, I live in TX but a small town so texturing isn't popular it is just starting in some of the brand new expensive homes I have seen.
I will check out the double roller woolie and see if it is something that may work.

Looking at your pictures, I'm thinking the dbl woolie just work. The texture would still show, but you may not see the design as much. You could aways try it on a small section and see what you think. Since you're not removing the paper you'd just paint over it is you didn't like it.
Whatever you do, that's a whole lot of wall to paint.
