Design Dilemma entry Home Decorating

I need suggestions to design the back wall of the stairway as seen in the picture . We’re ch aging everything up with fresh floors and wall paint . Floors are French oak natural , white walls , attached the chandelier too, and what I have in mind for the stairs redo. I need help with the back wall and niche .

I can always close it and add full wall wanescoting/ ship lap above and below stairs . But looking for something more affordable paint and hang kind of, if possible . If I did have to decorate it with the way it is . What could I add there .

Before painting, sheetrock over niche. It is dated and not functional. Then paint. Remove carpet from stairs and paint black and white and do an interesting carpet runner. Stairs without carpet are noisy and slip probe. Your new flooring will be fabulous! I would select large black and gold piece for entry. I would paint and not do any wood elements on walls. Concentrate on stairs, carpeting for stairs,entry fixture. Be careful about adding more wood elements.

Thanks for asking about an update. You are all too kind. I am still in love with my kitchen but, alas, still not finished. I did find my over the island fixture- and I love it, but its arrival has made me less in love with my sconces. I am now in the process of trying out replacements. So far one is sitting in my sunroom, deemed to large, one is en route from Schoolhouse Electric. Will you be living upstairs or downstairs? If upstairs why would you want your laundry room downstairs? Lots of shlepping. Especially since you have such a large master closet. I ask because your downstairs guest bedroom looks like it could be a master bath. would guests need a closed toilet or two sinks or a walk in closet? I think one sink with extra storage would be more appreciated, especially when you consider guests need space to store temporary things and hate the idea of putting them in "your" drawers. The toilet in the master bath is quite a haul in the middle of the night. Maybe not now, but as you age it might become more of a haul. LOL. Also if you're planning on living there for the next 25+ years, I'd think a bit more about it being able to be converted to being ADA compliant. Is there a place you can add in an elevator if it's ever needed? Your bathrooms would be quite difficult to get into and out of. Would you be able to use the powder room if you needed a wheelchair or walker? The kitchen needs help. I would suggest posting in the kitchen forum and let the guru's there help you design an efficient kitchen. This isn't quite it. The upstairs guest bedroom is a bit oddly configured. Have you tried putting furniture in the room? In the upstairs guest bath, there isn't enough room between the toilet and the wall, and it will be quite a tight squeeze to get to the shower. What is the point of the 6'6" loft area? It's too small for much of anything but looking down. Frankly, I think that extra guest bedroom/bathroom/loft area needs work. Love the his and hers drop zones. :) Wish I had thought of that.

very nice room. The rug and that chair work, the sofa in the white is meh. (definite no in that gray color). but I think you can do better. I would have gone w/crisper whites and blacks and warmer grays. Maybe that PB rug is nicer in person, but in the photo the color looks really muddy. I like the ones in this pic,,,deep charcoal, whites, grays, touch of light aqua.. and this table For rug, I'd do a coloring like this one, or some of the others in the pics I love your floors and thing you should bring in some wood in your sofa, even if it is on the modern side. Like this: A walnut, style sofa like this, in a navy, charcoal, very light gray,,,would be perfect more blacks/charcoal, crisp whites, some texture, don't know what the plans are for the sides of the fireplace, but here are some ideas

"modern farmhouse" style is pretty amorphous. Plus it doesn't have to be a particular style, as long as it suits the rest of the house and works well with your furnishings. If you find yourself gravitating to blue -- which works well with gold, and brass (real brass, not eighties brass lol) -- do it, and don't worry about pigeonholing yourself into a particular style. The added bonus is that the modern farmhouse trend has been around for a while and is on the way out. You don't have to tie yourself to something trendy -- that's the other secret to achieving timelessness : ) .

I'm not sure if its your style but I think a mirror that looks like a window with a flower box at the bottom and some pretty flowers/vines hanging would be awesome. Especially if your going with black/white color scheme. You can even salvage some shutters if you look around for yard sales/thrifts, etc. Also, a spotlight to highlight whatever you do decide to go with would be nice. Hope this helps!

I vote for Flo’s suggestion. While you have the workers there, close it up and paint over it. Your b&w theme will be more dramatic with that wall closed up.

Nothing is farmhouse about that niche. Fill it in now and move on. To me you have a nice staircase, I would rather see the handrail stripped and stained to match the floor rather then painted. Costs a little more but looks more expensive.

Cover that bad boy up. Boost up the space by adding moulding to that wall. Floor to ceiling.

I also feel that your lighting choice is too small and will fade into nothing once up. I would get something that is bolder and if your banister is going to be finished dark then the lighting should go dark too. You have approx a 19-22' ceiling there so think substantial for lighting. Before the moulding goes up consider hardwiring for sconces on the stairway.
