Do you remember this? Two marines delighted in killing a puppy by throwing it off an enormous cliff and someone FILMED the whole thing.

Seems to me their punishment is NOT severe enough. One was discharged and the other was "disciplined."

I don't know why they don't end up in prison for what they did. Don't the Marines read the papers and know that people who *delight* in harming animals are sociopaths who should be put far away from society?

Thanks Chelone,most of my color is from my container plants. I will appreciate your peony pics. Out of 12 plants 7 had no blooms, 2 had only one each. I am sure it was because of the hard freeze after they were up. I made woven wire rings to set around my plants. They 'disappear' when the plant grows back up. My 'full sun' is becoming more and more scarce...:-( I really like the shade in our hot summers, and our place is several degrees cooler since the trees have grown, but I do miss having sunny spots for sun lovers. This morning I was awakened around 5, and detected the faint essence of skunk coming through my open bedroom window. So far there has been no damage to my potted plants, but this morning there was a tiny bit of digging in 2 pots. I think I'll get some cayenne pepper to sprinkle on the soil in susceptible containers. I sure do not want to have to 'cage' everything as I did last year after the damage. Wildlife certainly abounds in our woods. Nolon heard a turkey gobbler this morning, and reported it to me, but I didn't hear it when I went out. I'm sure at least one doe has a fawn in our woods, but we haven't seen it yet. The rabbits are multiplying rapidly, but the cats are keeping the population down to more managable levels. Lots of squirrels are both seen and heard. A rather crippled, very light gray, small opposum was on the deck drinking from the cat's water bucket the other night when I flipped on the light. It looked like it had had a broken back.... I am not too fond of them, but don't like to see such injuries. Raccoons of all sizes are common. Chipmunks are frequently seen. We may not have many human visiters, but plenty of four-legged ones. :-) And of course there are all the birds. A tuffed titmouse is voicing it's disapointment at the fact that the cat dish is not on the front porch. I keep bringing it back in as soon as Miss Calliecat leaves the porch ( it is her dish). I am getting tired of feeding all the birds cat food ! I put out mixed bird feed, sunflower seed, and cracked corn for them...besides the left over biscuits, but some of them prefer the cat food ! I am thinking of buying the really cheap cat or dog food just for them. Our phone rang around 10 last night. It was a rather distant 'neighbor' wondering if her 81 year old brother had come by our place. He had decided to go visiting,( he lives about 60 miles from here...the sister lives much closer).He took clothing and other necessities, and mentioned visiting Nolon. I imagine she had called everyone she could think of before calling us. I hope he has shown up, and is safe.He has several relatives in this area.

I would also assume that it is legal in PA, but you can always check with your cooperative extension and see what they say. You mentioned that your slope is southfacing, so I assume that it gets sun. That should make it easier than a shady site to get something to grow. I am probably not the best expert, but what about forsythia bushes? The one I have in my backyard is prolific without being uncontrollable and I think would be deeply rooted enough to help stabilize the slope. Also I would think that they would be fairly inexpensive and common at the big box stores so that you could get a bunch in without breaking the bank. My other thought was some low growing evergreen bushes. I have some on my sunny slope and they are doing quite well. For the shaded portion of my slope I am looking at planting some hydrangeas (once I get the ivy out) and maybe some ferns. Litrope would also be a good choice and is sold at the box stores. I would consider digging it up now while it is not completely established and not out of control. Like a misplaced tree, it will just get to be a bigger proble to solve later if it is left to flourish now. Plus I would expect to find it establishing other places in your yard (far from where it is planted) and becoming a problem in many spots. Last, I know that in my english ivy is where the poison ivy starts. I only have poison ivy where the English Ivy is and that is a bigger problem! I have only had one piece of furniture stain from dog drool and licking-- and it was the one piece with guardian protection. I wonder if it isnt a chemical reaction with their protection chemicals and saliva?? It sounded like Guardian was sure aware of the problem. I have a mastiff/rottie mix-- and she has an adrenal tumor so she drools a lot. None of my clothes, rugs or other furniture have been stained. I had to replace the sofa because the seats and arms were a mess (she liked to lay on the sofa with her head draped over the arm-- in fact, both my dogs love pillows or headrests.. what a princess!) FWIW, I have been told that licking furniture, rugs, and the air are all signs of an upset tummy. Grace gets an upset tummy often from her cancer and as soon as I see her licking anything, I give her a pepcid. It works like a charm. As for the throw-- I wouldnt worry about waterproofing unless your puppy also "leaks". All you need is a barrier between her tongue/damp feet and the fabric-- she shouldnt be generating enough saliva to wet through the throw into the upholstery.

There is only one thing I'd like to add regarding the about the Story that started this thread. It looks like it's been 7 years so some of the pain has subsided as far as the shock which we just experienced with losing our Dog just days ago. I have depression, ringing in the ears, vision issues, all from the stress. All the advice here was better than i can offer as far as dealing with the guilt and the loss. My issue is the comment about the care while his Dog was in the care of the Vets. First off-the cost. We spent 1400.00 so they could screw around and lie to us about the possible results of meds, therapy, blah blah blah while the dog we loved struggles for every breath from the stage 4 heart failure. It didn't take a genius to see He was dying on the table. I was not happy as far as everything being so expensive and just the lack of common sense that you'd expect from someone in that profession. I t seems like it was all about the money first. They want you to go out and adopt a Pet but they make it so unaffordable that few actually can. I hope everyone here has found a little peace but I know it will never be the same. I wish there was some way to make these situations better but I've got nothing.

There is still quite some speculation out there that the video was faked. The dog certainly doesn't appear to be alive as he holds it and might be stuffed. Some video/sound "experts" have said the yelping sounds were dubbed in later.

That said the act of making such a video was deplorable.Animal cruelty as "humor" or entertainment should not be tolerated even as joke.So I think the punishment was well deserved. If a real animal was involved it should have been more severe and they got off too easy.

I wish the Marines would release a statement as to the veracity of the video. The title of this post may or may not be factual.

Well, "the title of this post" is based on CNN's reporting which was based (in part) on statements made by the United States Marine Corps, so I think that's on PRETTY GOOD authority.

In light of the fact that the USMC has invested time, money and resources on investigating this claim and then discharging and punishing the offenders, I'd say they believe the video is credible.

The punishment was a "non-judicial" punishment.

Every single news report on line has the Marines being punished for making the tape. Not one statement has been made that the guys killed a puppy or threw a real puppy over a cliff. The reports all state they were disiplined for their role in "producing the video".

Nobody including CNN said they "killed a puppy".

What disturbs me is that if they did kill the puppy, why are we allowing them to remain in the military? Because if it's true, my thoughts on it are this: people who get sick and perverted pleasure from acts of cruelty towards animals are people who are mentally unbalanced. They may have chosen the military as a place to act out their aggressions in an environment that is "safe" from detection and punishment. Their goal is to satisfy their sadistic impulses, not to serve and protect our country. Get them out of the military, send them back to the states, put them on trial as a citizen, not as a member of the military, and make them accountable for their actions.

I am always shocked at animal cruelty. I can't believe the justice system doesn't treat it like an assault/murder on humans!

That makes me so very sad!!! For the puppy of course. I have chosen to stay away from the news for now, as I have enough on my plate without getting depressed. I am so saddened at how some people live their lives on a path of harming rather than helping.

Good grief! Would someone PLEASE post a link to one article that confirms that an actual puppy was killed?

Do you not understand that the punishment was for producing the video? We do not KNOW that an actual puppy was actually harmed in the making of the video.

I hate this... if it's true and it sounds like it might be. This is where I can truly see myself hurting someone if I witnessed something like this.

I think the question as to whether or not they KILLED the puppy (as it appears they did) is a bit of a red herring. Let's assume for a moment they didn't kill the puppy and that an innocent animal didn't really make that horrible yelping noise as it plunged to its death.

Even if they didn't throw a live dog off the cliff, there's also this: These guys thought it was REALLY funny to make a video that was horrifying and graphic and to make it look like they had killed an animal. Oh yeah, what a stitch.

I'm with Wildchild on this. I've seen nothing that says it was an actual puppy killed only for producing the video. If the punishment was for producing the movie and not for killing an actual animal, then the punishment was more than enough. Sometimes being far away from home with nothing to do makes people do stupid things as in making a movie with a fake or dead dog. Killing it is another story.

Whether or not they killed the puppy I certainly hope that they are haunted for the rest of their lives with the vision of what they did. If we are lucky they will throw themselves off the same cliff. The world does not need people like that on earth.

The family of the Marine is from the Pacific Northest. I read this is the paper, and thought Id share. Something to think about...

Countless people posted their opinions about the video online. Internet-fueled rage quickly turned to death threats against the Marine's family. Many even called his mother's workplace in Monroe, demanding that she be fired.

If you search there is a video of two giant dogs throwing a Marine off a cliff if that will make some of you feel better. It's at Fark.com where people post weird videos they've made.
