Saliva clevelandii in pots, pls help
Comments (30)I find that a lot of California natives, including Salvia clevelandii, grow great in rich soil with water during the summer. The downside, I understand, is that they may not live long in a 'garden' situation. In a wild site with far fewer nutrients, less water, and generally tougher conditions, most natives develop a strong symbiosis with mychorrizal fungi. I guess in a watered, fertilized garden they do not. As a result of this, or perhaps some other factors, they may not live long in a garden. My Salvia clevelandii were planted in fall in gallon pots and were 5 feet high by the next May and full of flowers. They are a bit prone to stems breaking because they grow so large, but they certainly look nice and healthy. I don't know how long they'll live. Wild ones can live decades, I think. Mine are only about 2 or 3 years, but doing fine....See MoreLindac--did you get your puppy?
Comments (15)She is Latte...real/whole name is Creme du Chocolate...but Latte as in coffee with cream fits better.... She's a very sassy bossy little girl!! She escaped into the diningroom, and could then go through out the rest of the house....and wouldn't come when called...little $hi! Hard to train a pup that is not food motivated....she doesn't give a hoot if she eats or not! I should know better than to get a dog that is smarter than I am! Comments (13)I've worked with all kinds of wood, and maple is tricky stuff to work with. It will tend to blotch or not take stain well at all. I found a beautiful little table at auction, completely ignored by everyone because it was covered in gobs of army green paint. But upon close inspection I could see it had details in the turned stem. Once stripped, it even had paw feet! Sweet little antique, my father told me it was hard rock maple. There's a reason it has that name, it is hard as a rock! For $22 I was really happy but when I went to put stain on it did not absorb well at all and looked hideous. I ended up taking sanding it back off and just leaving it nekkid with a protective top coat. ;) I have a Heywood Wakefield BR set that it's good shape structurally but finish has seen better days on top. When I researched refinishing it, I learned (from a guy who specialized in HW restoration) that maple was often covered in what appears to be 'solid' color because of the way it reacts to stains. I'm describing that 40/50's look of seeing little to no wood grain. Leaving my table bare worked well for me, I actually prefer it that way. Probably won't suit your needs, though. I'd google 'staining maple' for more info. Here's one article that offers some good suggestions: Staining and Blending Difficult Woods He has pictures, too ;) I'm personally not in favor of putting stain over any type of poly or varnish. Stain was made to absorb into wood. Applying it on top of varnish or poly means it's sitting on that surface. Just can't see successful long term results, but that's just my humble .02....See MoreTurns out, those marines really did kill that puppy
Comments (19)I think the question as to whether or not they KILLED the puppy (as it appears they did) is a bit of a red herring. Let's assume for a moment they didn't kill the puppy and that an innocent animal didn't really make that horrible yelping noise as it plunged to its death. Even if they didn't throw a live dog off the cliff, there's also this: These guys thought it was REALLY funny to make a video that was horrifying and graphic and to make it look like they had killed an animal. Oh yeah, what a stitch. Here is a link that might be useful: CNN Story with some images from the original video...See Morewodka
