stained garage floor ... can you paint over?
Comments (1)You can't paint over the Oil stains. Wait, I mean you can, but the paint will peal off the oil stains. You need to get a proper cleaner to clean the oilstains up, then, if the floor is smooth, you'll need to etch the floor with a muratic acid. Once that is done, make sure it is clean, then use a proper sealer/primer first, then your paint. I just did mine, but it was brand new, and a rough finish so I did not need to etch. I used a primer sealer that is a bit tacky. I followed the instructions exactly and did two coats of one-part epoxy and got outstanding results. However, I just did it, so I'll let you know in 5 years how it holds up....See MoreConcrete Stain - have you done it??
Comments (9)We have done this a few times, it's quite a process, you should clean and brush good with TSP, rinse allow to dry good, then stain, then coat with clear coat for durability..look at gar. floor, we did that ourselves with a stencil, also did driveway and sidewalk, but hurricane charley did a lot of damage to driveway, so had this overlay and stain done a year ago. professionally. closer look, truer colors: Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreCan you stain each board as you install them?
Comments (5)No need to finish all 6 sides unless you are using a material unsuited for exterior exposure. Any wood typically used for decking is resistant to rot, so no finish is required. The visible surface is finished for aesthetic rerasons. The vendors and manufacturers of deck finishes may tell you to finish all 6 sides, but their interest is only selling more product....See MoreIf you have stained cabinets & window trim - did you match them?
Comments (15)Thanks to everyone for the pics and thoughts. I went into the shop to pick up door samples today and the building has an old fir support post that has some new fir trim adjacent to it. I found the light-stained maple sample was almost exactly the same color as the new fir, and the light-stained cherry sample was almost the same color as the old fir. The samples are a couple of years old, but they probably spent most of that time in a cabinet away from light, so they might not be as dark as exposed cabinetry would be. Circuspeanut - do you know if your cherry is stained? It looks like it is just a shade or two darker than the fir. I'm wondering where a light-stained cherry would end up. I spent some time in a granite/tile shop today as well, and while I think I like the cherry better than the maple on it's own, I prefer darker counters/backsplash and I like them paired with the maple more than with the cherry. So today's thinking is fir windows/trim that will ultimately go medium, maple cabinets that will be a couple shades lighter, darker counters/backsplash, and a floor that is stained close to where the fir will end up. Now I need to wait for me full-size door sample to come in. I could very well be swayed by the cherry and end up rethinking it all!...See More- 16 years ago
