I have always dreamed of living in an older home full of bits of surprise and history in every corner. Stained glass is one of those elements that gives a home character and a quality of craftsmanship.
Almost any window or opening can be fitted with stained glass, and you can find stained-glass artists in most cities. An artist can work with a design you have in mind, or come up with new ideas customized for your unique project. As these are delicate art works, the complexity of the design will determine the time and cost needed. Large pieces of stained glass come in modules, so recognize that seams become part of the overall design.
Contemporary stained glass designs are often more streamlined, geometric and less intricate than classic designs. The following images show how it can be incorporated in any style and any space of a house.

Here is a modern take on stained glass with linear patterns that can work in both traditional and contemporary homes. I like the subtlety of the neutral colors.
The stained glass drop-down ceiling gives a soft glow to this living area, which works great as a den/reading/study room. Here is an example of how repeating small patterns can have a substantial impact over a large area.
In this bathroom, a creative circular stain glass design provides privacy. The dark walls draw attention to the colors of the glass panels.
Backlist stained glass adds a custom touch to the cabinetry in this kitchen and finishes the top of the cabinets — an area often considered 'dead' space.
The custom designed stained glass fixture in this dining room spans all the way across the table. The orange and red colors blend in well with the room's warm wood tones.
Here is a great location for a new piece of stained glass or a saved find from a church. It gives the room most substantial feel and draws your eyes up to look at the beautiful vaulted ceiling.

This shows all artisan-crafted artwork in stained glass. What I'm really looking for (and which seems to be 99% ignored!) is stained glass (as can be ordered from manufacturers of it) used for its own INTRINSIC beauty as a material—the multicolor and layered patterns within a single sheet are glorious in their own right. For instance, I've used in in a high-mounted bathroom window, and it's a lot more interesting than just looking at a patch of sky. Does Houzz have ANY articles on what I'm looking for?
From a small window hanging to a permanent installed pictorial painted stained glass window, the reflection of color and character gives a home it's unique charm. This one was done for a bathroom window, home owners designed with the color pink in mind and are bird lovers.
Will have to post some pictures, but I restored a pair of 1885 stained glass doors for my bathroom and bedroom. Then I built a pair of stained glass transom windows to go above them. Later on I rebuilt an old sash window, turning it into a transom window to go above my kitchen door. The colors really pop when they are backlit!
