Help - where do I place my tv/entertainment cetner

We just moved into an atrium ranch. First time we have had a great room. Our dilemma is this. We are planning to buy new furniture but first we need to figure out where to put the tv & components. There is a mirror above the fireplace so that is not an option. We can have the wet bar pulled out which is next to fireplace (which we are doing anyway) and put it there. But all the surround sound wiring and components are hooked into the opposite wall and might be painful to rewire all that. Other option is to put TV on wall opposite fire place. We have someone that can build us a very nice ent ctr / built in. I would like to somehow get more seating in this room. We are replacing sofa but need to figure out layout first so I can figure out what kind of sofa to buy. ANy suggestions would be great!! Thank you!

Can you take pictures of each side of the room, so that we can see the orientation of the room?

It sounds like the best option for you, from a practical standpoint, is to put the TV on the opposite wall to the fireplace, even though that creates opposing focal points.

So what I'd suggest is that you replace the wet bar with bookshelves and arrange a cozy seating area with a couple of club chairs on either side of the fireplace, facing the room but angled, so that you're sitting by the fire but not looking into it.

Then you can arrange another area at the other end, oriented toward the television, with the main circulation of the room directed through the middle. If you could post more photos of the whole room, with overall dimensions, maybe we can help more.

Thanks - I'd given up on getting responses, this board is slow! I find I like to tip my head back slightly (I wear glasses so maybe that's where my focal point is) when I watch, so this TV sitting on 26" high stand is a little low. Great for lying on the couch (but I fall asleep so am not watching anyway) but not for sitting. The pedestal base is about 3" so bottom of TV, not screen, is just over 29", top of TV not screen is 55.5", so middle of screen is about 43" and I'm thinking I'd like it about 5-6" higher since it seems I am always looking at the top 3rd of the screen and not the middle to bottom 3rd. I have a slightly taller table/desk (29") in the basement we will move up and try before mounting the TV on the wall - the DVD player can live on a box under the table for a week. Yes, there is plastic on the sides (was keeping it there until we got the TV mounted), but not on the screen. Thanks for comments.

Sorry I thought I responded earlier but I guess the post didn't submit. Ajsmama: I actually purchased this sideboard/buffet off of CL. I had to drive about 45 minutes to get it and my husband attached it to the top of my Mazda Protege (which I am sure was not legal! LOL) but I loved it so much, it was priced great and I really wanted it for the TV. It could use a refinish but I will get to it when life slows down (LOL). My TV is 42 inches across and the buffet is a bang on 60 inches. Lowspark: I actually don't know much about it. I believe it to be Duncan Phyfe style but there are no markings on it. I believe it to be old but not antique. Do you know any info on your piece - would love to see it!

We had a similar situation when we moved into our home, with the placement of the windows on one side and doorway on the other. We have a two-story ceiling in our family room and the proportions were a challenge for me. After looking at many consoles and media centers, we decided on a built in wall unit that we could match to the existing trim and wasn't much more than some of those modular console sets. It was nice to be able to decide on the dimensions with our taller ceiling and while it took longer to have it built and installed, we don't regret it at all. The electronic components are "hidden" in the cabinets and we got some additional lighting into the room by putting lights in the top part of the unit. I can totally relate to not being able to find the exact kind or size of cabinets you're looking for, so if you can find a cabinet maker in your area, maybe you could compare that quote to the price of some of the units you've found that would also work in your home. I hate TV in my LR and have only one time ever had it there and never again. I guess you need to know how you entertain . We have amedia room in our walk out with also a pool table and a bar we use that space for sports or a movie sometimes with friends. I think if the bedroom is big enough I would do that. In you case you have some large walls that could accommodate a Besta type design with the TV even behind doors and some staorage and a bit of display . I find builtins usually are cluttered with a bunch of stuff not really worth displaying. I think in a contemporary space like yours I would not do traditional bookcase type display at all. Something like this idea would keep the TV at the proper viewing height and you could do the type of TV that looks like art when not in use

My in-laws have a similar room layout to yours. Where your bar area is they have a built in entertainment center. The TV is on a stand that pulls out and swivels if they want to make it accessible to many viewers. There aren't doors in front of the TV to close it off while not in use, but there are glass front doors where the components are. They aren't big TV watchers, so this works for them.

My son has a huge projection TV screen mounted to the ceiling in front of his fireplace and they just lower the screen (remote control) when they want to watch TV, but have it up most of the day. You don't even notice it up there on the ceiling and they can still use the fireplace with the screen down as it doesn't come down enough to block the fireplace. For this set up, you would have to have suitable spots for the projector and sound components. That's a super sweet set up, esp. if you're into movies. We love watching movies at his place. Also, you need to have blackout shades on the windows if you watch TV in the day.

I like the concept of a small sitting area in the vicinity of the fireplace and another one facing the opposite wall-if you decide to put your TV opposite the fireplace.

Wherever you place your system, it might be useful to have easy to move furniture, so if you have a big group conversing, playing games, watching TV, you can easily pick up and move your furniture to accommodate everyone.

Very pretty room.
