Help - where do I place my tv/entertainment cetner

We just moved into an atrium ranch. First time we have had a great room. Our dilemma is this. We are planning to buy new furniture but first we need to figure out where to put the tv & components. There is a mirror above the fireplace so that is not an option. We can have the wet bar pulled out which is next to fireplace (which we are doing anyway) and put it there. But all the surround sound wiring and components are hooked into the opposite wall and might be painful to rewire all that. Other option is to put TV on wall opposite fire place. We have someone that can build us a very nice ent ctr / built in. I would like to somehow get more seating in this room. We are replacing sofa but need to figure out layout first so I can figure out what kind of sofa to buy. ANy suggestions would be great!! Thank you!

Can you take pictures of each side of the room, so that we can see the orientation of the room?

It sounds like the best option for you, from a practical standpoint, is to put the TV on the opposite wall to the fireplace, even though that creates opposing focal points.

So what I'd suggest is that you replace the wet bar with bookshelves and arrange a cozy seating area with a couple of club chairs on either side of the fireplace, facing the room but angled, so that you're sitting by the fire but not looking into it.

Then you can arrange another area at the other end, oriented toward the television, with the main circulation of the room directed through the middle. If you could post more photos of the whole room, with overall dimensions, maybe we can help more.

This is a suggestion that has worked marvelously for us - although it's not cheap. We have a projector tv. The screen is mounted on the ceiling in a bay area. My husband made a soffit to go in front of it so unless you're standing behind it in the bay area, you don't see the screen when it's in retracted. We don't have windows in this area because it's actually under the dining room bay window. The projector is attached to the ceiling, but I've seen them on the top shelf of bookcases. We love this solution because then the room isn't arranged around a large object that when 'off' is otherwise useless (and unattractive). I personally don't like entertainment centers because it just makes it take up more space - and most people leave the tv exposed anyway. The only issue with a projector tv is that you need the room fairly dark when watching so you would need some window coverings or shades that are room darkening. Man, is it ever great for popcorn and a movie, though! We haven't been to a theatre for a single movie since we did this.

Yes @tatts. That's my reasoning also. I think the area where the oversized clock would work since it's away from the large window and it can still be viewed from the kitchen. I won't have it booked to the wall, only sitting on a console, to try it out first. @shari13: I am putting any kind of large seating purchases on hold until I get to arrange everything we currently have in the new space. Measuring is key. We're one week away from moving in, and I have only seen the new place in pictures. I have searched into modular options for future furniture rearranging options. Being a family with young kids, I know our needs will change. I'm researching modular sectionals, reversible sectionals, apartment sized sofas, swivel upholstered accent chairs, sofas that can be taken apart (burrow.com), and even considering a bench for the dining table. @Nicola Interiors: thank you for including a picture. I see your vision and I'm sitting all these great suggestions in my head as possible layouts. That's not my furniture in the picture, it's a staged house. It'll all come together soon.

I like the banquette ideas from DecoEnthusiaste, above. If you put comfortable banquette seating under the windows, put the TV on the wall perpendicular to the slider, and get an adjustable height table that can be switched from coffee table to dining height, it might work. But very expensive if you’re going to go custom. How many people in your family? Is there any way to make that room just a seating area/tv but build table height counter seating under the bar counter for eating? Here’s an example:

I’d use the niche for t v and media stand. Do something like this only have the chair on the fireplace window side. Or, without measurements of room, would a sectional fit with chaise next to front entry tile. Windows are great. Get those red curtains off and show them off.

My in-laws have a similar room layout to yours. Where your bar area is they have a built in entertainment center. The TV is on a stand that pulls out and swivels if they want to make it accessible to many viewers. There aren't doors in front of the TV to close it off while not in use, but there are glass front doors where the components are. They aren't big TV watchers, so this works for them.

My son has a huge projection TV screen mounted to the ceiling in front of his fireplace and they just lower the screen (remote control) when they want to watch TV, but have it up most of the day. You don't even notice it up there on the ceiling and they can still use the fireplace with the screen down as it doesn't come down enough to block the fireplace. For this set up, you would have to have suitable spots for the projector and sound components. That's a super sweet set up, esp. if you're into movies. We love watching movies at his place. Also, you need to have blackout shades on the windows if you watch TV in the day.

I like the concept of a small sitting area in the vicinity of the fireplace and another one facing the opposite wall-if you decide to put your TV opposite the fireplace.

Wherever you place your system, it might be useful to have easy to move furniture, so if you have a big group conversing, playing games, watching TV, you can easily pick up and move your furniture to accommodate everyone.

Very pretty room.
