LOL! Now I'm giggling too!

Aren't they called steers?

There are beef cows, and then there are dairy cows. Dairy cows need milking every day, whereas beef cows do not. They produce milk only when they calf, then their milk will dry up when they wean their calf, or start the whole pregnancy cycle over again. But, I am not sure that is what your city folk guy meant. Some farmers feed out steers for the feedlots. Then they are sold when they reach a certain age or weigh, I forget which. I am pretty sure it is age, as the older they get the tougher the meat.

"Aren't they called steers?"

Definitely don't want to milk those! You'll end up in the next county. LOL

Sounds like something a friend might say! tee hee

"Green acres is the place for me.

Farm livin' is the life for me.

Land spreadin' out so far and wide.

Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside."

Sorry, couldn't resist. LOL

Any kind of a cow is WORK! Whether you milk them or not.

Back when my ex and I were together we went to the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo. There were several city kids with us and they knew nothing about ranching. We were trying to show them the livestock and answer their questions. Everything was going well until one little girl ask Donnie how you could tell the bulls from the cows. He turned bright red, stuttered for a few seconds and then told her that the bulls were the ones with horns. LOL We never did let him live that one down

Dotmom, I was amazed at a neighbor my mother used to have that didn't know that a cow had to have a calf, in order to give milk. I said, "What??!! You thought they gave milk out of the goodness of their hearts?!!"

But, I guess that is better than my little nephew. My brother married a girl from Germany and she had a 5 year old son.
One time he asked him if he knew where milk came from, and he said, "The cow pees it." :))

I was raised on a farm and we raised beef cattle. We milked them until about 2 months, at the most, before they calved. They don't give as much milk as a dairy cow but they do give milk for a long period of time, if you keep milking them twice a day.

Thanks, KT friends, for the education (probably more than I wanted to know LOL)on cows/steers. I guess it was the term...non-milking cows that tickled my funny bone. If and when these city folk move up north, they won't be doing anything agricultural. Dottie

My ex-DH didn't know that veal was from calves and lamb was...well... lambs!
I never did let him live that down :)

Our favorite 'city boy' story is the Chicagoan who dashed from car to farmhouse claiming, "Those chickens (hens) came after me. They were all standing up on their hind legs."

In my companies defense, I haven't always been savy about country life. In 1978, DH & I went on a vacation with another couple and we stopped in a VERY small town In Montana, called Ingomar. All there really was in that town (that I remember) was a saloon, The Jersey Lily, where we went in (of course). After a couple tall ones, nature called and all they had was two out houses in back. I took one look at the signs on them and had to go back in to ask if I was a bull or a heifer. LOL Dotttie
