I have to give you a good laugh on me...

Yesterday I was checking my flowers an was shocked to see a plant that I could not remember what it was.

Well I got really nervous. So posted a question on the winter sowing forum. It is listed under, Is this legal?

After you read it you will see I was in a bit of a tizzy until someone answered my question. (which in my panic mode seemed forever)! Go oh you know you are curious as to my moment of insanity.

Caution this link does have pictures for those of you on dial up. Sorry, I was in a state an forgot to make them a smaller size.

They'll look legal when they start blooming. It shouldn't be long. Post another photo when they do. It's one of my new favorites. This is my first year to grow it.

I wouldn't know what the other kind even looks like!

My cleome sure doesn't look that healthy. For the last two years I have tried to raise them in front of the house and they are the sorriest, spindliest little things.

Next year I will try them in another area.

It's probably good advice though many people are old fashon about their gardens and have trouble leaving mulch on the ground around their plants. They are just used to bare dirt between the rows. Or sand. Here in Sandy parts of FL people joke that gardening in FL is like hydroponics. The sand holds the plant up and we have to provide everything else. For many people that means lots of chemical fertilizers that saddly leach out of the sand very quickly (polluting our water supplies) and need to be replaced all the time. To really change that picture of gardening in sandy Florida, it takes an immence amount of organic matter (yes any little bit helps but to make much difference requires quantity.) So anyway, I think it's good advice to leave the leaves. However, if it is only a thin scattering of leaves, it may be difficult to see a marked difference for the good if he follows your advice. However, if he has huge drifts of leaves landing on his garden, then mulching them on the garden for the winter should be wonderful for the worms next season.

Hi Merri, thanks for checking in...you sound busy, and then some! Things here in L'burg have been pretty tense...one of our "tall ships" lost a crew member when a rogue wave swept her off the ship and so the town is very subdued. It's good to hear your enthusiasm, hope we can be forgiven for conversing on this side of our forum....M

Hi, thanks for the comments and the encouragement! Kew tip....you a Londoner then with a name like that?? You're correct, houses here in the UK are usually brick built, or stone blocks like in the older houses in our village. The concrete blocks you see are actually the rear wall of the garages that we didn't get round to rendering and pebbledashing to match the rest and the house....will it get done now do you think? The list of jobs grows daily, it was more important to get a house for all my plants first. A door and opening windows come first I guess. I live in the Staffordshire Moorlands, 5 miles from Alton Towers Theme Park across the fields and valley at the back. (it's around 150mls NW of London, a similar latitude to Edmonton, Alberta according to my map for those who are not too familiar with these parts) We are just south of the Peak District Nat Park, it's a small rural hill-top village...and very windy! We managed to salvage most of the glass as it was toughened so that was a great help and we already had the wood, so all it cost was many man-hours...and woman-hours too! It's already filling up with all kinds of plant life....palms, agaves, dragon trees, alocasia, fuchsias, pelargoniums, passion flower, strelitzia, hoya, callistemmon, plumeria and not forgetting the Royal Poincianas!!! Things are really warm here for the time of year, we are having an amazing April with temps of mid 20's, I am having to open the g/h before work as it reaches 100+. Usually this time of year is cold and wet still..global warming?? Happy growing! Gill.

Thanks for the link Lynlyn. I thought I was reading my autobiography. I'm a barefoot gardener so I can't imagine gardening where snow lays on the ground.Also I too lazy to harvest that many turnips. Peter

Bonnie, I have a 8' plant in my border--by the road--that has leaves exactly like the popular plant in Mo. I even took leaves to my SIL to identify-thats what he thought it was--blooming now--has dusty purple flowers.
And I can't remember what it is!!!

That is so true. I did not really know what it looked like either.
I was glancing at that bed as I walked by and was drawn back to that plant. It scared me. I thought I had gotten some crazy plant in trade.
I will post a picture when it blooms. I hope it is red but more than likely since it was a trade it will most likely be white. Which will be fine.
Now I laugh at my self when I go past.
I was told they like sun and not to let them dry out until established. They really grew when I added the composted manure : )

Does cleome come in red? I've only seen pink, white and purple.
Here's a pic of the ones I bought at Wickmans this spring. Two were white and two were pink. They're blooming even better now. I haven't ferilized them at all.

Oh Christie I just love them. I can't wait for mine to look like that.
On the red thing. I had seen in a catalog that they had "rose" cleome. So being me I just thought it was red. But now that I googled it. They are more a deep pink for lack of a better description. Bit it really does not matter I will like them any way.

If plants with Palmate leaves scare you, don't plant Vitex.

And be careful with the okra. A few years ago a "spotter" from an airplane sent a ground crew down a lonely country road and a 1/2 mile long driveway to wipe out a patch of you-know-what only to find a family's garden. He took a ribbing.
