A glimmer of possible hope; no PMs, but hope

I've been stalking the alleyways here in my new town, scoping out sparrow slums, plotting ways to make them disappear, accosting possible landlords.

So far, I've not been arrested. We have only one cop in town and I pretty well know his schedule. (LOL Just joking, sorta!)

One street over from my back yard is a metal Trio-Type (?) birdhouse. Far too small for successfull fledging, but clean, in good repair, and the doors are closed. I spoke with the elderly man that lives there.

Yes! He's had Purple Martins each year. He said they normally arrive at his house toward the end of May. I nearly did cart-wheels of joy on his back porch. Being a plump, middle-aged woman, I reconsidered and restrained my jubilation.

He had never heard of nests checks, and didn't know how many PMs fledged, but he knows there were some young. At least he keeps the doors shut against the sparrows in the off-season.

His PM house is far too close to a large tree and the ground for safety, but he is hosting Purple Martins. Wait until they get a gander at my gourd rack!

I have a tiny glimmer of hope that I may yet see Purple Martins here in Larimore.

My former colony is back on base, homeless and distressed. I actually broke into tears when I saw them last week. I'm going to try to "lure" them here. It's going to look ridiculous; think "Pied Piper" with a red CRV, gourds swinging from Sheppard's hooks out the back window, PM Daytime Chatter CD blaring, and me driving 5 mph from base to Larimore, repeatedly. Yep; I'm gonna get caught in a net, but I have to do something!
