My grandpa died yesterday...

...and I'm sad. He was 83 and I was just planning to go down one weekend soon and visit with him and my grandma. The funeral is on Thursday- my brother's birthday. :( I can't figure out if it's easier that I live far away or harder... It kind of stinks being sad on my own.

i am 14, my dad died unexpectadly too about three weeks ago, my birthday was three days preceeding the funeral. i have five siblings and a little sister who is eleven. i am my familys stronghold too. you can talk to me because i know what you are going through, honestly, and its really rough. but your dad wants you to be strong for your family. He loves you and is very proud of you for taking this sacrafice for him as a subsutite of his absence. He is your gaurdian angel, if ever you feel like just collapsing, dont collapse in on yourself, please just facebook message me, i can honesly relate to what your feeling. if ever you feel lost or hopeless, just pray to your gaurdian angel, and he will be there for you even when you feel completely independent and you are enduring burden all by yourself, he is right by your side, tracing every step you take and picking up the pieces you dropped or just couldnt handle anymore, and he takes care of them for you, because he loves you and wants you to be happy, if he is with you in flesh or not doesn't matter anymore, now he is with you always, looking down from heaven with a smile, pointing you out to all the saints that pass HEY LOOK THATS MY DAUGHTER!! he is so proud, and he loves you more than you will ever comprehend, and he just wants to let you know that he is there for you, even when you think you don't need him, he is still there, holding your hand walking you all the way through pace by pace, taking baby steps all the way, not excluding any single miniscule detail and leading you through every obsticle you encounter with ease. if ever you feel hopeless, alone, frusturated lost, or worthless, just give your daddy a call, and he'll be right over, before you even ask. this is how i talk to my dad, this is the first prayer he learned, and he taught this prayer to me and my siblings before we even knew how to pray, and thats where our faith started. i suggest you pray it to your dad, it will really be useful during your grieving process and throughout life in general. Just know that your daddy is on your side, and all he wants to do is guide you though what you can't get through alone. You will never be alone again, your dad will always be with you, just recite this prayer while thinking of your dad, and he will listen, and he wants you to talk to him, because he loves you and misses you. Ask him for advice anytime, or just talk to him and tell him how your life has been or something exciting that has happened recently. Nothing with your relationship has to change from what it was like when he was in flesh, except now he can help you with everything you need assistance with, and he will share his expierence with you. He is very proud of you and he loves you, and if you ever want to talk to him and plea for help or just catch up and say hi, just say this prayer, and he will listen and guide you and protect you and ease your burden, afterall, that is what gaurdian angels do! its his new job, and he couldn't he happier with it! Now you have someone to talk to Jesus for you and ease up God when you make a mistake or sin. He will listen, remeber he will always listen and he really does care. Angel of God, My Guardian Dear to whom God's love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side to light and guard and rule and guide. Elderly cats do get kidney disease plus heart congestion, our 17 year old cat did and we gave medication, special foods and he hated it and was so thin. Talk about hard, I phoned and got an appointment and told my mom I did and started sobbing and she told me to cancel it. I did puzzled why? She said if its too hard, we won't do it. I said no, its time and I phoned back and my dad and I sobbed all the way there to the vet and then we had to wait while this lady had 4 cats to get checked and then it was our turn and the room they took us in was the same as they check the cats and there was others behind us and so it was a rushed goodbye and I didn't like that at all. We all sobbed and cried, he was my precious, I can still see him coming down the hallway upstairs in my parents place and him yelling his head off and I would say he needs his four hugs a day as he demanded them daily. He was my beloved and I miss him still alot and its been 6 years since we said goodbye. Its a huge gap in our lives when we lose our beloved pets, doesn't matter how little or how long they are with us, that bond is so deep and so strong. Thank you everyone! I've emailed everyone above and replied to the emails that were sent to me. Socks and Susan, thank you for the suggestions. Fortunately, and unfortunately, because of his age and all the ongoing issues he has, he sees all his doctors very frequently, so they are aware of his dizziness problems. Poor guy, he just has so many things going on.

Yes, living well is the best revenge, Marilyn! I, too, am loving these grandparent stories. Will you do a separate thread on paternal grandfathers? If not, I'll be back! I don't know a lot about my mother's father, but all of it is good. His wife, my grandmother, died suddenly of a heart attack in her forties. They had three daughters, my mom the oldest, and the youngest was only 15 at the time. By the time I was born, he had remarried. She was very different from his first wife, a little overwhelming and a difficult stepmother. He was a quiet man, and she was . . . not. We lived in NYC, and they in NJ, where he owned a German deli. We didn't see a lot of them when I was growing up. They had one child together shortly after I was born, so like Moni I had a younger aunt I never called "Aunt." I'm told he was devastated after my mother died (when I was 9), and didn't get out and do much after that. A male childhood friend of my mom's told me the story of how my grandfather drove my 14-year-old mother from NJ to PA to visit him one summer when he was working as a camp counselor. He said he was such a nice man. I believe it; I never heard differently. I remember dancing silently with him at my cousin's wedding when I was about 20 and thinking it was a shame we never really got to know one another. Here he is with his youngest daughter, Claire.

I'm sending some good thoughts your way in the midst of your hurt and sadness, Danielle.

We have some half-formed plans ... like planning to go visit Grandpa and Grandma ... soon ... and then everything changes!

I'm sorry that you're stuck with grieving alone (apart from phone calls), Danielle.

Have you found some friends in your new community that you can visit, to cry on their shoulder? If not, think of someone who's an outgoing, active, busy, friendly person. Just go and tell that person of your problem ... you'll more than likely receive a great welcome. If not ... try someone else.

If you don't think of someone ... do you know a small-town storekeeper? Ask them - they know everyone in the community, and would likely have a good suggestion to offer.

May I suggest that you give a local clergyperson a call/visit ... they know how to be with a person (even a stranger) undergoing such stress.

Are you going to go to the funeral/memorial service? A bit early, or for some time after, or just a quick trip there and back, with little extra time to spend with family? I hope that you can find a way to spend some time with the family, while there.

Also, I don't know whether you've lost a close loved one before, but when it's the first, it's even more upsetting, even shocking.

For while we've seen such things happen to others, unless it's a relative or other loved one, or a close friend, it's more an intellectual experience: out on the fringe of our emotional awareness ... doesn't affect our emotional equilibrium nearly as much.

Again ... good thoughts and prayers going your way just now, Danielle.

I'm sorry Danielle. It's hard loosing that generation. I had both my Dad's grand mothers outlive my dad's parents. But now I'm grandparent-less. Are you guys making the trip down?

Thanks so much everyone. We live a 3 and a half hour drive from everyone. The prayers are on Wednesday evening, the funeral is Thursday and the burial is on Friday so we'll be leaving here on Wednesday morning. Funerals are such odd occasions aren't they? They are sad but also joyful in a way because you get to see family you may not have seen in years. I have two cousins that live in the US that I haven't seen since they were little. They are in their early twenties now and they'll be flying in.

Gosh I'm sad. I wanted to ask mom if I could have one of Grandpa's hats but I got all choked up on the phone and I couldn't do it. I suppose I'd better ask before they get donated. My Grandpa was a crusty old guy but he could also be very sweet. He would buy bags and bags of candy and hand it out to everyone he met. In fact they keep finding bags of candy going through his room. :) He would always give his grandkids a quarter when we visited and I can still remember the excitement of that!

For an 18 year old who very nearly got blown up on a beach in Normandy during WW2 and who lost some of his fingers and was full of shrapnel his whole life, to live another 65 years is a gift. And he was.

I'm going to be a mess when I get there.

((((Danielle))) I am sorry for your loss. I loved the little bit that you told us of your Grandpa - I like reading the little tributes about the loved ones we just lost.

You talking about your Grandpa handing out candy to everyone so much reminded me of my Grandpa McClelland - he used to do the same thing!

I hope you get one of your Grandpa's hats.

On Sunday, June 1st, it will be my hubby and my 40th wedding anniversary and the last day I saw my wonderful grandma alive. We went down to her house in our wedding outfits to see her. We called a couple times on our honeymoon to see how she was doing. We came home early so I could see her one last time but she died but we were 30 minutes to late. I still miss her dearly! I would have loved for our 3 children to have known her. She was one of a kind.. I try so hard to be a Grandma like she was..
