We have some half-formed plans ... like planning to go visit Grandpa and Grandma ... soon ... and then everything changes!

I'm sorry that you're stuck with grieving alone (apart from phone calls), Danielle.

Have you found some friends in your new community that you can visit, to cry on their shoulder? If not, think of someone who's an outgoing, active, busy, friendly person. Just go and tell that person of your problem ... you'll more than likely receive a great welcome. If not ... try someone else.

If you don't think of someone ... do you know a small-town storekeeper? Ask them - they know everyone in the community, and would likely have a good suggestion to offer.

May I suggest that you give a local clergyperson a call/visit ... they know how to be with a person (even a stranger) undergoing such stress.

Are you going to go to the funeral/memorial service? A bit early, or for some time after, or just a quick trip there and back, with little extra time to spend with family? I hope that you can find a way to spend some time with the family, while there.

Also, I don't know whether you've lost a close loved one before, but when it's the first, it's even more upsetting, even shocking.

For while we've seen such things happen to others, unless it's a relative or other loved one, or a close friend, it's more an intellectual experience: out on the fringe of our emotional awareness ... doesn't affect our emotional equilibrium nearly as much.

I'm so sorry, Danielle. I never got to see my grandfathers,but I had one Grandmother and I still miss her.

I'm sorry Danielle. It's hard loosing that generation. I had both my Dad's grand mothers outlive my dad's parents. But now I'm grandparent-less. Are you guys making the trip down?

Thanks so much everyone. We live a 3 and a half hour drive from everyone. The prayers are on Wednesday evening, the funeral is Thursday and the burial is on Friday so we'll be leaving here on Wednesday morning. Funerals are such odd occasions aren't they? They are sad but also joyful in a way because you get to see family you may not have seen in years. I have two cousins that live in the US that I haven't seen since they were little. They are in their early twenties now and they'll be flying in.

Gosh I'm sad. I wanted to ask mom if I could have one of Grandpa's hats but I got all choked up on the phone and I couldn't do it. I suppose I'd better ask before they get donated. My Grandpa was a crusty old guy but he could also be very sweet. He would buy bags and bags of candy and hand it out to everyone he met. In fact they keep finding bags of candy going through his room. :) He would always give his grandkids a quarter when we visited and I can still remember the excitement of that!

For an 18 year old who very nearly got blown up on a beach in Normandy during WW2 and who lost some of his fingers and was full of shrapnel his whole life, to live another 65 years is a gift. And he was.

I'm going to be a mess when I get there.

You talking about your Grandpa handing out candy to everyone so much reminded me of my Grandpa McClelland - he used to do the same thing!

On Sunday, June 1st, it will be my hubby and my 40th wedding anniversary and the last day I saw my wonderful grandma alive. We went down to her house in our wedding outfits to see her. We called a couple times on our honeymoon to see how she was doing. We came home early so I could see her one last time but she died but we were 30 minutes to late. I still miss her dearly! I would have loved for our 3 children to have known her. She was one of a kind.. I try so hard to be a Grandma like she was..
