I bookmarked this last month when I was looking for a wireless intercom system. I don't know anything about it, but it looked like something worth checking out.

when we had someone try to break into our home the police officers told us the number one thing we could do to help stop that and help them too was put a LOT of outside lights up, the more light around the place the less likely they will hit you, they will go on down to some dark house where they will be less likely to be seen. And also to get a driveway alarm. We have one of those also. It can be set up so that animals will not trigger it but a human or car or anything bigger than a dog would trigger the alarm which is in your home. There are a lot of junk ones out there, we got a very nice one at Northern Tool supply, it is wireless and was extremely easy to put up.

We have considered cameras if we did that we would definitely put out signs. You know you can buy fake cameras and the signs to go with them that are just as real looking as a true one.

We did not go with motion sensor lights we do not want them to even consider our house, our many outdoor spot lights go on at dusk and stay on. A neighbor down the street had his truck broken into last week, his is one of the dark houses.
No one has been back near our house and in our neighborhood homeowners meeting the police used our house as an example of what they wished all of them would be like.
It may cost me a little more on my eclectic bill (I have not noticed it) but for the peace of mind it is sure worth it.

the other thing the police officers really strongly advised at the meeting was if you own a navigator GPS unit do NOT leave it or the mount anywhere in the car in fact be sure to clean the windshield so that the suction cup circle is not visible, they look for that, if they see it they know there is one somewhere. They said they are getting such good prices for them at the pawn shops the theft rate has gone nuts even in very high end neighborhoods, since they are likely to have them in their vehicles.
I did have a GPS in my vehicle in the drive but it was in the console, of course the main place they would look. I no longer leave it in the vehicle and never use the window mount.

Many of the new car dealerships are being hit hard with the majority of theft being the nav units, in the process of course the vehicles are severely damaged.

Luckily in our case my husband was up and saw the guy at the glass door trying to get in. He was caught in the neighborhood a little later.

Thank you for the suggestion forhgtv -- my husband and I took a look at dropcam, and decided to go ahead and order one.

ravencajun -- good tip on the GPS. My guess is that they probably broke into the car, because they could see the mount on the dash. The actual GPS was in the house, but they probably hoped it was in the glove compartment or something.

Rivkadr, I hope you'll come back and tell me how you liked the dropcam...ease of set-up, any wireless interference issues, etc. Thanks in advance.

My neighbor over me in condo, has a device on his window.
He's not here for any length of time and he receives a message on his cell phone that tells him is someone has been detected by his window.

Id also put a motion detector so lights go on too.

forhgtv, just wanted to give an update -- the dropcam arrived today. Super, super simple to set up. You basically plug the camera into your wireless router, and fill some stuff out on their website. It does whatever connection magic it has to, and that's it. Then you mount the camera wherever you want (it comes with all necessary mounting hardware), and plug it in -- you can then watch the camera on their website. We decided to pay the $9 a month fee to have 7 days of tape saved.

The picture is surprisingly crisp; you can clearly see people's faces. And when you watch the tape on their website, it clearly marks when the camera detects motion, so you can go straight to any sections where someone was doing something on the camera.

So far I highly recommend it!

I have motion detector lights in the front and back of my house so that my guests and I always have light to walk in.

We have both motion detector lights,and on at dusk and off at dawn lights around our house.

DH recently got a motion detector camera to install by our pond as something kept eating all our fish.Within 3 days he caught the culprits on video.They were those crows/blackbirds or whatever they're called and a great blue heron.

He got the camera at k-mart for i think he told me 60.00.Sure served it's purpose.We had been wondering for years what was eating the fish,twice Koi,then he went to gold fish and those were devoured as well.

Camera gave a very good video,of the crows plucking them from the water,laying them on the edge,then eating them while looking around.Da** birds.

We recently put up a camera to see what was eating the outside cat food at night....Hubby got it at Harbor Freight, paid less than $30.00 and during the night, I stick in a tape...We have super pictures of a big raccoon helping himself the the food...And it looked like he was posing for the camera, ever once in a while, he'd sit there and look up and if not mistaken, gave us a smile.....
This cheap camera gives me a good feeling, if I'm upstairs and hear someone on the porch, I can just click on the camera....
