Well we did a tin backsplash.. what do you think

Well we put in a tin backsplash. Actually its some kind of plastic but anyway let me know what you think. I'm 90% sold on it. Just curious what the viewing public thinks.

I think it looks terrific. It compliments the emblem on the front of your apron sink, and somehow with the pattern of your chair backs as well. Can you show more pictures of the room in natural daylight?

We have one of those nurseries in my area, surrounded by homes of the Rich and Famous, replete with private golf clubs, tennis courts, etc., etc. Their indoor sales area is about as large as the outdoor garden sales area and features hundreds of potted tropical & houseplants, every conceivable size and design of ornamental pots and garden knickknacks, plus a bookstore, stocked only with garden related tomes. Outdoors, there is a large garden railroad and a huge Koi pond, which, during the summer season, is decorated like a jungle. Huge selections of annuals, many trees & shrubs, but slim choices for the perennial gardener. They have an affiliated company, that performs landscape design, installation & maintenance, so I suppose they stock what is mostly used in that business. Within the building, there is a large conference room, that will accommodate about 100 people, which is available, free of charge, to garden clubs and plant societies. Aside from attending many meetings there each year, it's always a treat for me to browse through the sales areas, while munching on a bag of popcorn, which is also free, from an antique popcorn machine. They offer discounts to groups that meet there regularly, but even so, everything is still terribly expensive, except when they have a clearance sale. The company has been in business for more than 100 years and started as a seed store, later branching into a catalog mail-order business, which was terminated several years ago. I suppose, that in certain locations, there is a niche market for that type of business, but it surely isn't a mainstream nursery that most gardeners would frequent!

Thanks for the nice comments, but I'm seriously thinking of scrapping the whole idea. While it's beautiful and goes perfect with the soapstone, it's like it's too refined for my "old farmhouse" kitchen. I told my husband this morning that I'd put it in a bathroom in a heartbeat, but in my kitchen, it feels like I'm letting my fancy lingerie show under my work apron . . . It's ok for a hint, but this seems too much for me. And the other problem is that I think it makes it feel like the baking center with its wood top belongs in a different kitchen. I painted my backsplash a light green to see how I would like it, and at first I loved it, but a week later the novelty has worn off and I'm finding is kind of unsettling. But that is why I painted the backsplash first - I just wasn't sure how I'd feel about that color on the walls. For that kind of money, I really have to love this look, and though I really like it, I guess I don't like it $1,000 worth LOL!! I really like the crackle look - am going to look for subway tile with the crackle finish. My floor tiles are rectagle, so the rectagle backsplash would continue that pattern, and then I'll going to see how it would work to use the border on the floor as the border on the wall. Not sure what I'll use for the inset. On Sunday afternoon, I was all ready to purchase that tile. My husband dropped off the paperwork but the Sales Lady never called me so I had time to think about it, and the more I thought, the more I started questioning. Maybe I was dealing with "I'm tired of looking and this will work" syndrome, but after a few days I got rested and felt better about looking more. Here is my floor pattern. I put this in over a year ago - before I was planning on Soapstone so now the challenge is tying the floor and countertop together - but I think it can be done. I may go as far as to remove all the middle tiles and replace them with something a bit green - I almost chose that when we did the floor, but decided the brown would work better - If only I'd known LOL! The baking center now has a white beadboard backsplash, and will eventuall have some sort of corbel type brackets to make it look more like a hutch than wall mounted cabinets. And some day a window seat will be built under the window. Here is a picture showing the soapstone next to the floor (yes, I have this pattern in the dining room too). When I look at these pictures, I get this nagging feeling I should not have got the soapstone after all . . .I hate that feeling so I really need to find a way to salvage this. That little 5" sample looked fine next to the floor, but having several feet of it on the countertop overwhelms everything else. The good part - it's only freshly oiled that is looks so intensly green (which I do love on its own) and though I oiled the sample it's a chunk that is mostly dark so it looked like it would work with the floor. My husband is not happy that I'm even considering messing with the floor, but the good part is I can do that this summer when he's out of town and he'll not know about it until I've got it all done. We've already had to bust out and replace one tile, and it's not that hard to do. Messy, but not hard. BTW- DH is colorblind to undertones in colors - so he actually does not "see" what is bothering me about the floor/countertop issue.

We love this stone...but it's not granite. What do you think?

Please, if you make recommendations to NOT use these slabs please also tell us about your credentials to base your advice on stone, or at least your personal experience with the specific stone, or at a minimum "where" you heard that it isn't a good stone. We do appreciate the comments, we just would like the opportunity to know how much weight to give them. We are still investigating this stone and we will be discussing it with our fabricator today who will have the opportunity to see the slabs in person. There are many kitchen countertops with Kozmus, Cosmos, Saturnia (and other names) with photos posted across the internet as well as within this forum with owners who frankly love their countertops. So, maybe it's more about the specific slabs or about the ability of the fabricator. I know that it is not an easy stone to fabricate. As far as "not suitable" for kitchen counters, there are professionals who say that marble isn't suitable for kitchens and there's plenty installed and doing well. I think that backsplash perfectly suits your beautiful kitchen.

BTW--I love Sting. Fields of Gold is my very favorite song!

Awesome!! I am planning on tin for my backsplash... what did you trim it with??? It looks like some kind of quarter round???? It is successes like these that re-enforce some of others indecisions. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the positive response. I feel better about it already. Also we stopped the tin at the desk. Let me know if you think we should tin that also.

Here are more pictures during the day. It really looks different in the light versus at night. Now to answer a few questions.

1.It was easy to install. 2.The sink came from Ebay. 3.The quarter round is corner trim. We used it on the bottom to help hide the fact the drywall and granite don't match perfect.

I love the job you did! I don't know about continuing it behind the desk. How do you think the wall phone would look against it? That would be a concern for me.

I think the tin backsplash looks really great in your kitchen! Not sure about the desk - remodelfla's point about the phone is a good one. Do you have any tin leftover that you can prop up against the back?
Anyway, great backsplash choice! Can you share the name brand of the tin?

It looks great. I think the area over the desk is fine without the backsplash. I also think to continue it would be fine. It's a personal choice IMO

your kitchen is beautiful!! am considering "tin" backsplash for my kitchen. where did you get it, did you DIY/was it easy to cut/measure??? any feedback/advice is appreciated. Cost??

I'd probbaly prefer to have something there at the desk -- if not the tin, maybe a fabric covered message board -- the kind with ribbons that can hold notes or photos. I like the phone out of the way, but I'd also like the look of puttin it down on the desk and having a message board across the entire area.

Whatever you decide, you might just want to live with it for a bit and see how it works for you. It will be easy enough to do when you decide.

The tin splash is a nice look and does compliment your sink. I considered tin for our kitchen, but it just didn't seem right here.

Hello and thanks for all the comments. The granite is Lapidus Gold. Here's a link to the manufactures website. You can buy this stuff at Lowes or HD. We spent about $350 on material it was very easy to work with. We choice the ORB finish.

continue it over the desk area, otherwise it will look choppy and abruptly stopped.

it looks great, by the way. it's a wonderful detail.
