Is buying a house a bad investment in SW Michigan?

I'm considering a job in Berrien County Michigan, which is the most SW county in the state along Lake Michigan. The area has Chicago resort second homes and the old-time farmers (fruit, vineyards). Commuter trains run into Chicago (70 miles). It seems to be a buyer's market with houses that have been on the market a long time.

If we make the move, I'll probably be there about four years to get the kids graduated from HS.

I am worried about the resale. Michigan has been depressed for quite a while. Would I be stuck with a house I couldn't sell?
