Second try; second thoughts

I posted this question earlier but I have no idea where it went. I'm about to start a powder room redo. I've purchased this cabinet (see link below) and will be installing beadboard (to be painted bright white) one-third of the way up (3 ft.) topped by chair rail. The upper walls will be painted a silvery sage color (SW--Jogging Path). My painter/handyman fancies himself a decorator and he's decided that the cherry cabinet will look out of place with all the white trim, beadboard, etc. He wants to paint the cabinet white but I'm saying no to that. Then he said I might want to paint the beadboard the same color as the wall to tone down some of the white. I like the crisp look of the beadboard and the clean look of the white. But having said that, he has made me second guess my choices. What are your thoughts? I could lose the beadboard and chair rail altogether and just paint the walls all the same. Thanks--I'm conflicted--and look forward to your thoughts.

My suggestion is to go with your gut and initial plan, white beadboard, sage walls and vanity as is. If you don't like the vanity, once it is installed, you can always paint it then. If there is the white beadboard behind the vanity then it will really pop! Good luck.

I would leave the cabinet the color it is - it will be a nice balance to all the white and light colors in the space.

If you are going to do beadboard, then I would go with the white. My thought is that if this is a powder room, will the texture of the beadboard and all the lines both vertical and horizontal, feel like too much in the small space? Not having seen the space, there is no way to judge that from the description.

The other question is whether the beadboard look fits your home.

That will look great hung up with flowers in the box. I copied and pasted in "file open' and it opened. If you use photobucket, copy the entire html 'address' and paste into the message and that should work. You can try it in this same thread and see if it shows. If it is not there when you look at the review message, then you have to hit back button and retry the address.

Regardless of whether or not they give you a timeline (which they should), take the proverbial "bull by the horns" and start to read more about the various steps/order with regard to building a house and start to make some decisions before the builder asks you about it. I found this website on Google and it gave me a little more background on the process: http://www.kelownabc.com/construction/ If you are picking out windows, you are still at the beginning of the process and there are a LOT more decisions to come. In our situation, no one is telling me to finalize tile picks even though I know they're going to need to order the tile soon. In most cases the foreman is so focused on what needs to be done in the immediate future (in our case, the doors) that he's not thinking 2 steps ahead. I found that getting a small notebook helped with phone numbers, etc. I've been looking at things like tile, lighting, cabinets, paint, wood, fixtures, doors/hardware, etc 3 or maybe 4 times before coming to a final decision. Give yourself about an hour a day and you won't feel so overwhelmed. And when I start to worry about whether or not I'm making the right decision, I just remind myself that it's just a door, hardware, etc and not an attempt at world peace.

How much time do you expect to spend at your laptops in a typical day? Unless it is and you expect it to remain pretty brief, I think a comfortable, ergonomic, adjustable chair is important. Getting something suitable may save vs. spending copays for doctor and physio visits for back, shoulder, etc. issues. There might be an office surplus place or such where you can get something suitable, but if not, I think it is worth buying. If any of you are short like me, a good adjustable foot rest is relatively inexpensive and makes a difference. Storage should be able to be picked up free or inexpensive used from places like Craigslist, Freecycle, garage sales, Goodwill and other thrift stores. Bookshelves, file cabinets, a dresser to hold office supplies - whatever you need.

My first thought as I was reading was to agree with the handyman. But now that I have seen the photo, I think it would look nice in the cherry tone, playing up the the look of a stand-alone piece of furniture.

I don't see any purpose in making the bead board and the wall be the same color.

Thank you all so much! I think I just needed validation. Soonermom and Graywings, you both summed up very nicely what I was trying to say to my painter/handyman/"decorator" earlier today--"pop" and "piece of furniture." I really think that once he gets the vanity installed and gets the walls painted, he will see what I'm seeing in my mind. Les, I see what you mean about a lot of lines and the room is very small, but I think it will be ok. Thanks again.

I think your instinct is right on. Painting the cabinet white will just make it disappear into the white beadboard. It will look better with contrast against the walls.
