Can you put a hold on the roof until you pick your brick? How fast can you make it to the brick supplier and drive around to see examples? I personally would not pick out the roof without the brick choice. We just had our roof on our current home done. I had one color picked from the sample board, but when I brought it home it looked awful with my brick. We even went to look at houses with the roof color on it and thank goodness we did that.

I'm not sure what almond is in this case...taupe? What brand of windows?

yes. . they are beige/taupe.

i have two bricks that we really like. one is special ordered and will have to be brought in. the other, i still haven't found out what it is yet. i just have pictures of it and love it!

anyways. the houses that we fell in love with, with those bricks, both have black roofs. evidently it has to be ordered tomorrow. our GC said i needed to call him in the morning.

unfortunately, he gives me NO time to get these things figured out. . .which is really starting to bother me. he just assumes we know what to do next. i've insinuated several times that we'd like to have a timeline, but i still haven't seen it.

anyways. i do think it will work out and i'll be happy. . .i'm just fretting now, because of the uncertainty of not knowing, i suppose. . .and hoping and praying everything will "flow" together.

SLOW DOWN. It sounds like you are being pressured to make decisions when you are not ready to make them. Demand a timeline for decision making (this makes it much easier for you to anticipate and stay on top of the "what's next?") so that you are in control and can make the most informed decisions for your family. Logic won't always help you in trying to anticipate the next decisions, because sometimes it seemed weird that we would have to pick out Y before X.

as for the windows/roof/brick: I did see your post in kitchens, but thought I would come back over here, so I saw you write that you really wanted white windows. How do you think your favorite bricks will look with the almond versus white (or any of the other many colors available!)?? Definitely wait on the roof decision to be made in conjunction with the roof.

Regardless of whether or not they give you a timeline (which they should), take the proverbial "bull by the horns" and start to read more about the various steps/order with regard to building a house and start to make some decisions before the builder asks you about it. If you are picking out windows, you are still at the beginning of the process and there are a LOT more decisions to come. In our situation, no one is telling me to finalize tile picks even though I know they're going to need to order the tile soon. In most cases the foreman is so focused on what needs to be done in the immediate future (in our case, the doors) that he's not thinking 2 steps ahead.

I found that getting a small notebook helped with phone numbers, etc. I've been looking at things like tile, lighting, cabinets, paint, wood, fixtures, doors/hardware, etc 3 or maybe 4 times before coming to a final decision.

Give yourself about an hour a day and you won't feel so overwhelmed.

And when I start to worry about whether or not I'm making the right decision, I just remind myself that it's just a door, hardware, etc and not an attempt at world peace.

yes. i've asked for a timeline or schedule for a few weeks, but i still haven't got one.

he did tell me today that i needed to start looking at tile. he told me to look at bull nose. . .anyways. i'm such a structured person. ..comes with teaching, i think, and i really need at outline and time list of what's going and and when decisions need to be made!

yes... slow down and take your time. choose your window trim color, brick and other materials at the SAME TIME.

My windows are "almond" (whatever that means according to the maker - in our case, Hurd). My roof shingles are much darker than they appear in this photo, a dk brown w/greenish tint. The native stone we used is dark, and I was afraid the windows would stand out as too light against the roof and rock.

We also have almond siding where we don't have native rock, and from the same siding company, we added a pine green "window outline thingie." I realize there's a proper name, but it's been a while!

I agonized too, especially since each window is a "2 over 1" style and the dividers - almond, obviously - are imbedded between two pains of glass (no changing the color w/out replacing entire windows).

i feel much more at ease with my decision now. i found a few houses in the area the other day that had almond windows and the entire "feel" of the home wasn't brown to me, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the compliment, jessicaleigh! I hope my pictures helped - I'm about to start a total rebuild (thank you, tornado Gods of Oklahoma [insert sarcasm here] for giving me the opportunity to go through this process again when I thought I had build my "forever" home!)

One thing I learned on that build, and I'm going to hanging around here constantly reminding myself, is: in the long run, you live IN your home, not looking at the exterior, and you have all kinds of major decisions ahead of you - don't spend all your energy on every single thing, or you'll end up shortchanging yourself in the end, because you're just so darned tired. But, you'll live w/the decisions you make while finishing the interior everyday.

I'm so glad I could help, but I have to say I find it funny that you found some other homes w/almond windows that didn't give an overall "brown" feeling ... since my whole house was brown! But good for you, easing up on yourself. Since I'm rebuilding, we may have the chance to run into each other again soon!
