Good thoughts and prayers for you Anette. I'm sure you'll find another job soon, and I hope it's one you really like. The medical field needs good people in all areas. Did the amount of time you had with them have anything to do with it? Older employees stayed, newer ones let go type of thing?

That's more than a bad day. Fortunately, you're in a field where there is still a huge demand--know you'll find a job soon. May not be your 'dream' job, but you'll be paying the bills.

And let me just add. I was riffed 28 years ago. Broke my heart at the time. I loved my job, where I worked. But in the long run, it was the best thing that every happened to me. We'd been trying to get pregnant for about 5 years at that point with no luck. Within 4 months of losing my job, I was pregnant. Not only that, but I had temp work at my 'old' job for several months, because 2 others were on maternity leave.

Not wishing you a pregnancy--unless that's what you might want--LOL--just making a point that within a year of my losing my job, my life was SO much better and I've never looked back.

Good luck to you--know there are opportunities in this for you as well.

I'm stunned that some HR person or exec thought that a good way to do a lay-off would be to have the employees fly into a strange city and hear the news in a large group. So much more personal that way GEEZ.

Annette, that was a terrible and heartless way to do things. My thoughts are with you. I hope something even better comes your way and I hope the person or persons who chose to terminate the jobs in that way get some of the same.

I've heard stories of mass layoffs, and I think it's just an atrocious method. I hope they provided you with a severance package to keep you going for a little while. Unemployment is a good benefit, but since it's not as much as the paycheck we're used to, it just can't cover everything.

I was laid off myself, just a couple of weeks ago, so I totally understand your shock. I lucked out very quickly and am back among the employed.

Wow, that was a shock. I had virtually the same thing happen a few yrs. ago when we were all notified our plant would be closing. I had almost 17 yrs. put in, but others had a lot more - some with almost 30. It was hard to go through but I somehow survived. I'll keep you in my thoughts & prayers & hope there's something good on the horizon for you. It sounds like you've got a great background so I'm hoping you'll find something good - and soon.

Surely, they reimbursed you the expenses for attending the meeting?

THere's a nursing shortage in Iowa.... and most places I'll bet! Good luck! I'm sure you'll find a better group of people for employers! I've actually heard of people being fired by email!! Sheesh!

Thanks everyone. Still shell shocked here, but I did go to the employment office to apply for my unemployment today.

To answer the few questions that have come up-

There were people like me who had been there less than a year, and others who had 5+ years of service, so seniority did not matter.

We will be reimbursed for expenses, as soon as we file our expense reports.

Base severance was 2 weeks, with an additional week for every year of service. No vacation time was given.

Again, thanks. I believe that all things work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. So this is a bump in the road. Just a big unexpected bump.

That's a good attitude, Anette. When it happened to me, my first thought was at least I'd be rid of the horrible woman boss I had. I also believe all things happen for a reason & something good is waiting for you out there.

I agree, Judy. Sometimes, what I think is bad luck happening to me turns out much later to have been good luck. I had to change the situation or find an alternative, and it always turned out, in time, to be a much better option. Best wishes to you!

Sorry you were treated so badly. That happened me 28 years ago and I still remember the feeling of shock, like the floor disappeared right out from under me. But as it turned out I found a much better paying job with nicer people afterwards so something bad turned into something good. Keep thinking postive thoughts.

I know you don't think much of Texas right now, but I am sending you Texas sized hugs and prayers for a much better future! Our company just did that about 2 months ago...fired 50% of the staff. I'm one of the fortunate ones that still has a job, but that is only minute to minute.

I am sorry they did that to you in such a horrible cutthroat way! I know with your experience you'll have a great job in no time!

Man! what a day that was.....whoever dreamed up this escapade needs some common sense. I wish you well in your job search -- like others here, I know how hard it is.
