Very cute house! Love the color of the siding.

Just wondering where you would be putting the shutters? There isn't room on the right side window. Would they only be on the left side window?

I would not do shutters. I would add some wider trim around the windows, and then window boxes below. I would add a decorative piece above the frame of the door.

Window boxes, new porch and all trim in the same trim color as on the house now, or just a bit warmer and creamier. Front door in a rich deep moss green or navy blue.

I think the picture is deceiving...but there is room for shutters on the right side as well as the left. But I like the idea of trim...except my only question is this-we have white windows-so would a "non-white" trim look ok? Or would I just do white wide trim, white window boxes...does the porch need to be white too?

I also have several windows on the sides of the house-would you suggest the same for them?

I agree with Les (as always great advice :))....no shutters but yes to wider white trim and decorative white piece above the door. I'm bad with this, but I hope you'll get some help from some of the great photoshop people on this forum! How about some shade of red for the door? (I think navy blue could look good too) Photoshoppers?? BTW Cute house!

I can tell some of these colors aren't going to render properly, but I'll post anyway. I just kept it simple. With the shade from the tree I added hydrangeas and hostas to front landscaping, beefed up the window trim just a bit, added window boxes.

Then did several combinations. White porch/window boxes, matching the siding more closely, then a cedar tone. Various door colors with those.

I can't get a deep rich red to render properly and think it would look nice. Play time is over, I'm going to have to get to work soon, so if anyone wants to tweak what I've started (and especially slap a nice rich red on there), feel free.

Oh, more in your album here. (Also, makes me want to pull my hair out, software is hiccuping. On some it will not fill color in entire door. So if you see a white rim around some doors, that's what's up with that. ;)

Thanks for all the GREAT advice! I love the idea of wide white trim...but I don't know how to do that now that the siding is already on. Any suggestions on that? I love the idea of a white decorative something above the door. That is going to be a must.

I think a true deep navy blue would be amazing for your door. Also I love the rest of Les' advice.... as usual!

A nice fabric awning would really dress up the door and front of your house. It could bring a lot of color for you to work with on the rest of your house.

Every house we've had, has had awnings, expensive but add so much, I think.

I meant to say an awning OVER your door-not the windows. When I re-read what I wrote, I didn't explain it very well.

I'd go with navy or a deep purple for the door. I would not do shutters. IMHO, shutters don't look right on the kind of windows you have, but that is me. I think shutters need to be wide enough to look as if they could close over the window as originally intended and narrow ones always look a bit funny to me. Wide trim and window boxes-perfect!

I like almost all the bolder colors with your really cute! house --
The wider window trim, flower boxes and over-the-door something are also good steps.

But I don't think a triangular pediment is working there... Too Colonial - not cottagey; and all I see is the different in the angles on the triangle shapes. Hopefully, one of our resident architects or designers will chime in with what is 'proper' for your style of bungalow. Maybe a cute-shaped gable vent or stained glass window high over the door? Something cute... Or barge boards?

The lanterns by the front door also seem a bit undersized to me. Your entry is such an eye-catching feature that really great lanterns would pay off.

Though the style is different (but we have a high pitched roof also), the color of our house is very similar to yours. The paint company calls it Mesquite, I usually call it mud. The trim is BM Calming Cream (a warm, creamy white) & the front door is BM Heritage red. It works very well & people like it. In fact, I've seen a couple of strangers come with paint chips, & one woman rang our bell to ask about the colors.

Yes, kathleenca, I'm hoping someone can offer a richer red door ala Heritage (I'd have to start over in different software). Would also have liked to try a few more easy, less costly details e.g. lanterns amy mentioned, perhaps a different mailbox, on the house? But a couple hours of quick doodles maxed out my allotment of happy distractions from the day job. ;)

Oh - did try an arched door frame/trim to offset angles on the facade. In order to get a good arc it needed to go higher, which seemed too much weight for the entrance. Reducing it for proportion looked too squished. Perhaps a pro will drop in & offer their time and do it properly. It's back to work for me.

Oh my goodness!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the navy door and the white arch thingy and white porch! I'd be curious what a deep red looks like if anyone can show that! Thank you thank you thank you for the inspiration. I also wonder what a star or medalian would look like above the door in the big open spot. Thanks again!

Love the deep red color. I think a midtone grey similar to your shingles would look nice too. You can always bring in the other colors with your garden. Cute house.

Is it just the photo, or is the front door not on center to the apex?

I keep wondering if your roof is grey or green? It reads kind of green onmy monitor. I do love the reds, but if the roof is green, I would be inclined to go with the navy or deep olive/moss green for the door.

Moonshadow - I'm glad you worked on the red doors. I had a feeling the red would be my favorite and it is, especially the Cottage Red.

Les, goes to show you what monitors will do to colors, I see all gray in the roof. ;)

All that work and not once did I notice what funcolors mentioned, there does indeed appear to be more vinyl to left of front door compared to what is on the right side of it. Perhaps a mailbox mounted there would bring that into balance (if it's even something that bothers the OP). I've tried to draw a straight line from center of door straight up, it does seem to veer to right a little, doesn't go straight to roof peak. So that might throw off anything ornamental done above door.

Guess we'll have to see what busymom says if she weighs in, she did say pic was deceiving re: shutter space as well.

Hi! I am quietly observing! Ha!
You are all right in some way---the roof is definately gray. The door is NOT centered and the mailbox does belong to the left of the door (the wider side). I really don't know what the original builders were thinking to not make it centered, but it was going to entail way too much to change it when we resided.
Our intensions are to put the house up for sale this summer/fall. We bought it and slowly redid the entire house inside and out-now we're feeling the need to get to the country - and likely start all over again! :)
With all of that said-I'm not looking to spend a TON of money, but we will definately be painting the porch, putting the window boxes up, painting the door, putting new lights/lanterns up, and a new mailbox mounted to the house.
