Qof Day 1/19/10:What thread for Machine Applique?

What brand and weight of thread do you use when you Machine Applique? Do you select the thread type by the type style of your project?

I took an Heirloom Machine Applique class on Saturday.

The instructor - Judy Shapiro teaches classes & lectures in other parts of the country (USA) - recommended 100 wgt cotton or silk thread for Machine Applique. She also likes mono filament (top & bobbin) and said even a dressmaker cotton/poly blend is okay (avoid the poly if you want the project to last 100 years).

Judy is self described as an "Artsy person", but is mostly known for her Baltimore Album quilts (hand appliqued). She started teaching an Heirloom Machine Applique class using the blanket stitch to help students with severely arthritic hands. She is very much of the mindset of accomplish what makes you happy.
