In High School What Were Your Very Best Subjects?

In high school, I made straight "A's" in Art and Botany. Back then I loved them both. I still have my Botany book.

English, French and Biology. I didn't like Math or Chemistry but I still got A's in them, I just had to work harder. I graduated top of my class.

I was raised in a Michigan subdivision where the corners of 3 (yes, three) school districts came together in that one sub! Four houses down from mine, started school district #2, and two streets over was the third. The local (Catholic) church where we belonged was in this third area of the subdivision and most of my close friends were ones I'd gone to catechism with from kindergarten on. I was the oldest in a large family and, as a result I guess, a pretty outgoing leader. But, I was going to school with kids I hardly ever saw outside of school. Sadly, I was too shy there to allow myself to relax and "be me". I look back at pictures of me then and realize that I was a very pretty girl, but I honestly never felt very pretty then. I was 5'6" tall, 114 lbs with long, straight dark brown hair, big brown eyes (my best feature) and with one really great figure (gosh, what I'd give to have that body back again!) I was an editor of our school newspaper and in quite a few clubs, but where I came alive was after school and on weekends with my local pals. I was outgrowing my tomboy youth, but still had lots of guy friends. We had a pool in our backyard, a basketball hoop fixed to the garage, a vacant lot a few doors down where we played neighborhood softball, football and ice skated in winter. We had a big finished basement with pool table, Foosball table, tv, stereo, and a fridge that Mom kept stocked with pop (sodas) and snacks for us. Mom & Dad's idea was to make our home welcoming for our friends so that they had us there under their discretely watchful eyes (LOL!). My buddies, siblings and I had lots of fun together, spending as much time as possible outside swimming, skating, biking, playing football, softball and basketball. I can't say that I was miserable in HS, because I wasn't; I just was much more of the real Lynn outside of school. I had many friends in school, but never bothered seeing most of them outside. My HS was quite a ways from our home and too far from my school friends. My parents were not about to start providing me and my sibs with cars, as we were all only 1-2 years apart in age. So, back then, my "social circle" remained close to home. When I started dating, most of my boyfriends went to other high schools. I even skipped the dances and senior prom to go with my boyfriends to theirs. Funny thing was after college I moved to south Florida on the ocean where I worked and spent my after hours scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, water skiing on the intracoastal waterway, playing tennis, deep sea fishing, and played on a girls beach volleyball team with my many friends. When I went back to my 10 year class reunion, practically everyone mentioned that I was like a totally different person. I forgot to say that I graduated in 1980. I think I paid the couple hundred dollars myself. I was working at the time. One of my best friends who graduated in VA went with her class to Cancun, Mexico. She graduated 2 years after me and her parents paid thousands for her to go! Now kids go to Europe and Aruba. They also have more elborate proms, only a few "rich" kids had limos back when I was in high school. Now everyone gets one. I'm dreading the day when Lauren starts going to proms. I've already told her she'll be wearing the same dress to all of them or we'll be buying them used and cheap. And no limo.

Thanks for all of your kind thoughts and words. I think his parents both passed away some time ago. He had two older sisters who had already got married and moved by they time I first met him in the fourth grade. He got married just out of high school with a baby already on the way, while I set off for Ohio State University, relishing the opportunity to reinvent myself and be lost in the crowd after growing up in a small town with a small school. So partly it was different life trajectories and partly it was me stepping away from ties to my hometown and who I was, to make a better me. I think it is mostly the unexpected shock of his sudden death that has me rattled, that and the realization that he was such a good friend, for so long and I couldn't be bothered to make any effort to reconnect, and now he's gone. His service is planned for this Friday, in Cincinnati, nine hours drive away. Even if it were closer, I don't know whether I would attend -- would I even know anyone? What could I possibly say? Friends of the family have set up a donation form to help them cover some of the "costly expenses that a death brings" It notes that "he is survived by his two children, Jessica and Tyler; his fiancÃÂ© Natasha and two sisters." A fiance -- that sound so hopeful and forward looking that this is all the more heart-wrenching. I may change my mind and drive out for the service, but in any case I'm planning on donating through the form, but I'm trying to figure out what to say.

I keep eyeing this thread but hesitated about posting because I think it's still too soon to really comment about most of my roses, being as they went in the ground in 2013 or later. But the more I think about it, there are a few which stand out. Not in ranked order.... Best "Bermuda Spice" -- gets hit hard by Winter here, but comes back strong after removing damage in Spring. Thereafter, I don't touch it, save for snapping off faded blooms if the petals don't drop off on their own. No diseases at all for me, and hasn't been without at least a few blooms since it started back in late May. If I ever need a handful of blooms to give to someone, I always have some "Bermuda Spice" in the bunch. 'Marie Pavie' -- first of mine to bloom, then has repeated flushes with short pauses. It's blooming now. No disease through most of the season, but it's getting a bit spotty now -- in November, so I don't care. I've since learned -- thanks to 'Perle d'Or' -- that when deadheading Polyanthas, Teas, and Chinas, it's best to just snap off the blooms. Cutting bare candelabra stems back to the next set of leaflets just delays the next flush. Oh, and while not powerfully scented up-close, this one gently fills the air in the front yard with its fragrance. 'Golden Buddha' -- as with the Chinas, Polyanthas, and Teas, this one gets only dead bits removed in Spring for pruning, but has far less damage. Still, it remains small and blooms in wave after wave through the season. All I do is snap off blooms when the petals start to look dingy. It seems immune to blackspot here, despite my not using fungicides. It did start getting a touch of mildew last month, but very little. Oddly, I saw mildew starting last month on things that never had it before, so I think it was unusual (for here) weather that brought it on. 'Souvenir de Victor Landeau' -- ok, this year I didn't get any Autumn blooms, but I also didn't give it a July haircut, which is what it seems to need to promote that last flush of the year. Instead, I watched to see what it'd do if given only a Spring prune -- and now I know. And what it did was have two or three flushes beginning late May and running through late July. Oh, and it also kept clean foliage. Even out of bloom, I enjoy looking at it as a sprawling shrub. This doesn't mean that everything else was just "meh" -- or worse. I keep in mind that I'm still "letting them grow wild" after their Spring prune, and am seeing which roses seem to need that haircut to trigger another bloom cycle. I've come to learn that the Chinas, Teas, and Polyanthas don't need this extra attention. Neither do the shorter moderns -- various Austins, 'Golden Buddha', my few HTs and Floribundas -- nor the repeat-blooming OGRs leaning more toward their Asian ancestors -- 'Souvenir de la Malmaison', 'Mme Dore', 'Mlle Blanche Lafitte', etc. But the larger-growing, longer-caned Bourbons, Damask Perpetuals, and Hybrid Perpetuals seem to need that "reset button" of a haircut to get them to set buds again here. 'Paul Neyron' and 'Rose du Roi -- original' had just a bloom or two after the main flushes, and were getting really tall. So I cut them back again to about 50% larger than I left them after the Spring prune -- and they responded with new flushes. Too bad I waited too long to do this to 'Yolande d'Aragon', because it's setting buds now -- the first since June. I also have a few more contenders for "best" next year, but they're still too young to say for sure. Worst 'Monsieur Boncenne' -- beautiful first flush, with another after a very short pause, then riddled with blackspot. I don't spray here, and this one goes completely naked by July. It keeps trying to put out foliage, but spots appear even before the leaves mature. 'Jude the Obscure' -- same as above. These two are side-by-side, so their nakedness is made all the more obvious. I'm considering a dormant sulfur spray before everything leafs out, then continuing the season with weekly Castile soap "rinses" via hose-end sprayer. Thus far, neither of these two "worst" roses have me eyeing them with the shovel. However, if either fails to improve next year, that situation may change. :-) ~Christopher

I can't remember any of my grades, but I know they weren't spectacular. However, I worked as a secretary for more years than I care to remember, retiring at my last job after 17 years, so I would say typing and shorthand. In one of my first jobs I worked for the patent attorney in a company where it was mostly chemical ingredients, so I quickly learned or improvised shorthand chemical terms.

I don't know how many words a minute I typed, but after years of working I know the typewrite repair man commented on it.

My best was Skipping Class!

No not really, I mean I did do that plenty of times but I loved math, any business classes and did pretty well in social studies.

Home and Society, a lot of the jocks were in there and it was a riot. Absolutely hated English because of things we had to do up front of the class. My step daughter and my little sister were smarter than I was, they both just said no and still passed.

After all these years don't really remember,but graduated 4th in my class of 350, 3 boys beat me! We moved after my soph. year and finished the Jr. and Sr. year clear across the continent from Fl. Graduated from Watsonville High School in Ca.

Home Economics (cooking), Art, Typing and Shorthand. I absolutely hated English. I didn't like to read back then and then to have to stand up in front of everybody and give an oral report. YUK!!!

Definitely English. I was the go-to person for my peers to get help on papers. I "helped" my brother (a year younger) with a paper once, and was busted b/c our friends recognized my "voice" in it. They predicted then I would become an English teacher. I denied it; they were right. After that, probably French, b/c I enjoyed it (but don't remember much now). I was also successful in band with my flute, but that doesn't really get a grade. I was generally a good student, but I did struggle in high school math classes.

Thank you catlady, I just like to know what everyone else is up to and what they think, it makes it fun when there are posts to read and answer, at least it is for me.

Math was my very worst subject! I was not that fond of gym classes either. I never really cared about going to school, but never skipped school. Only missed if I was sick and at times that did happen. I think the reason I didn't care that much about school, was that I always wanted to be outside and with my dogs and ponies or fish in the river that we lived right on. Too much good stuff waiting for me.

This will be a bit long, but I think everyone here will appreciate the story.

The course I excelled in was one that males weren't allowed to take. I became a ground breaker when I was finally allowed to take the course and paved the way for other male students.

I wanted to take Home Ec (actually it was cooking, but they didn't call it that then) in my sophomore year, 1963. When I told the counselor I was told "males can't take that course, you need to take some type of shop". When I asked why, I got the answer "because home ec is only girls". Sooo, I went first in mechanical drawing which I promptly withdrew from after pinning the instructors shirt sleeve to my board with my compass. His sleeve naturally ripped off when he was walking away. This time mom came with me (she was catering at that time and thought I should be allowed to take the course)and was handed the same line. So off to wood working I went. I lasted all of two weeks before I sent back to the counselor's office. Reason? I kept breaking the stupid saw blades. Once again mom and I make the trip and again meet the same stupid reason. O.K. electrical shop it is.

To this day, I have the dubious distinction of being the only student ever to blow the entire electrical system in the school. Don't ask me how I managed that (I think the system was actually faulty and my overloading one of the outlets was the real reason it blew) but you should have seen the counselors face when mom and I went into his office. His response? "He can take ANYTHING he wants Mrs. K as long as it's not a shop."

So I spent my last three years in home ec and maintained a straight A average. I did have a couple of the gals who tried to make it rough for me, but the instructor brought that to a screeching halt.

I graduated in 1966 and was so upset when Mrs. D called me into her office shortly before graduation and handed me a thick package. It contained a scholarship to the chef's school in Chicago. What she didn't know was that I had enlisted in the Navy and this being 1966, there was no way out of that contract. I never did make it my career (the military wound up being my choice and a good one) but still enjoy cooking especially when we have a party.

I did very well in math and biology. Good thing since I became a nurse.
English was not easy for me.
I was my Home economics teachers star student, she loved me. She had me do lots of sewing for her and other staff. I still love to sew and cook/bake.

I still have my report card (book) for all 4 years. one year I got about 4 D's (turmoil in the family) I made passing grades after that . I was into singing in the chorus and doing committee work. I was busy looking out the wiindow I think.,I was on the executive council and planned dances etc I had terrible handwriting and after I copied how my boyfriend wrote I got better marks
