Just now - the "Hell Strip". While I was quitting smoking 20 years ago I pick-axed the entire clay strip in front of my city apartment building, fed what soil there was, made a stepping stone path from the parking space with the cheapest concrete tiles I could find, planted drought tolerant perennials and scattered wild flower seeds - the track team from a high school 3 blocks away made a determined effort to destroy it, but finally got the message when I stood out there at 3:30 every afternoon holding an enormous arrow pointing to the sidewalk. I moved away 8 years ago, but after 19 years it is full of low shrubs, a few poppies pop, the tiles are intact, and residents tell me there is love-in-a-mist every Spring. (yes, I shed the coffin-nails as well, smoke-free for almost 20 years). Joy!
