DH and I drive 3 hours to visit the dentist. When we moved we decided to keep our dentist. We also pick up ribs or chinese and my tobacco.

I love road trips. I guess I would drive really far for a vacation or to visit friends!

I wouldn't drive that far for the dentist. I like my dentist, but I'm not that attached to him. I don't think there are many things I would drive that for... except maybe to visit friends or relatives. Well.. some relatives.

Like many others I've gone as far as you with a push mower. It's futile, even the very best simply isn't built for such rigors. To be honest, on a wet day the deck might need cleaned every half-hour just to maintain a rough cut. That amounts to time, grime, filth, and stench. Plus the mess on a tarp or whatver/wherever you use to clean over. I'd consider a really nice garden tractor, semi-commercial zero turn, or even a commercial walk-behind. The latter of the three is most versatile regarding slopes and grades but without experience you can still get into trouble. A garden tractor that can take ground-engaging equipment would depend on other intended uses but you might like the option of a tiller or snow plow? ZTR's are difficult to shop these days with so many options. Many are not very rugged although they easily clone those that are. One I've seen sold as a "homeowner" unit for 3K is the 48" Z-Beast at HDepot. A friend bought one on my recommendation for his 4 acres+ (I've done commercial mowing since the 80's). It's not as beefy as it's "commercial" counterparts but for the price I'm overwhelmingly impressed. I honestly am on the verge of replacing a 52" commercial walk-behind having sampled his several times. It's stout and nothing we compared in the price range is close. But again, like a tractor, slopes and ditches aren't as easy. You'll always need a good trim mower and string trimmer. You can always mount a string trimmer to a rider to hit problem areas while you're there. Same holds true for a large walk-behind but not as easily or comfortably. You won't do well trying that with a push sized mower. Whatever you choose, even the primo commercial Honda "push" and it's commercial counterparts aren't built for what you're doing. It's overkill. You'll be far more satisfied with machinery that matches your useage. Better job, less fatigue, free time left over. Best of luck, I'm sure you'll find something more suitable. As someone previously stated, try to consider it an investment. Shiny new junk turns into rusty old junk fast, harsh conditions expedite the process. Pick something worth keeping and post a picture of the lawn, beast of burden, and happy smile.

Ok, deep breath. Remember you're spending a lot of money and taking some time to research is part of the process. If I catch myself getting rattled, indecisive or feeling a lot of pressure, sometimes its good to remember that its not a life or death decision. If its not clear, do some more research or just take a week off from doing anything about the kitchen. First point, your carpenter can assemble and install any of them. Don't worry about that. I have Scherrs and they are rock solid. They are better much constructed than ikea. You can get any size of anything and not pay more for it. You order sample doors to see colors. There are a couple of things I wish ikea would improve in their cabinets, but they are likely better than jsi (more below). The cabinet size selection is poor. Their cam locks aren't the greatest, neither is the particle board. If put together and installed well, they should last a long time. Their drawers are fine. You can do something blended by getting scherrs to make the odd cabinets and your drawer fronts, trim pieces and doors for ikea cabinets. They know how. You can have ikea-cherry. From the published information on jsi's site, its impossible to tell how the cabinet is built. So I have just two bits of info to go on. I've seen the insides of a couple of brands of chinese cabinets and they were pretty crappy. The outsides looked nice, but the drawers and cabinet were constructed poorly. These remind me of those, but I could be wrong. You'd lose a lot of potential storage space in drawers because of the frames. Click the picture with the drawer extended and you'll see what I mean - the usable height of the drawer is a little more than half of the height of the drawer front. Also, the "dovetail" drawer only has three pretty chunky dovetails and visible sanding defects. The surrounding doors have stain blotches. This is what they photographed to show you how wonderful they are... Diamond is a problem - they are very pretty and have a large selection of sizes and types. The way the cabinets are made - the dimensions of the pieces and the way they are assembled - isn't very good. So, as an every day quality measure and completely unfair I might add, I've never seen a diamond display intact and I've not seen an ikea built-in cabinet display falling apart. YMMV. hth

I'd make the drive. Understand completely. I too made a quest for EK this week (started last week actually). Moved into a brand new house and the whole thing is beiged out with KWAL and SW colors. I thought I could deal with it but I can't. I can appreciate a good neutral as much as anybody but holy cow it feels so incredibly dead and flat. Ellen went above and beyond to get 10 gallons to me stat. I'm a color junkie and needed it pronto. It did take some time to get a brand new ICI dealer up to speed on full spectrum. There was a bit of a language barrier but we (mostly Ellen) got thru it. I had no idea where the hell I was driving to get my fix -- new town and none of it looks like the golf course laden, sleepy suburban communities around Dublin, Ohio that I'm used to. Pleasantly surprised to find that via an expressway the ICI store is less than a half hour from my new house. Thank goodness. Even better is that it's the cutest little independent store. Clean, well organized with friendly and knowledgeable owners/staff. They were positively fascinated with concept of full spectrum color and are eager to learn more and mix more. THEY GET IT! I honestly got in my car and wiped a tear from my eye. THEY GET IT, THEY GET IT, THEY GET IT! I think I'll be okay here.... but this crap currently on my walls has ta go.

patty - it sounds like you have done similar renos to what we have done. We haven't listed our house yet, but will be soon due to a job transfer. We live in AZ, so needs are different here. Where I come from, carpet is very common in the FR/LR/DR and bedrooms. But in AZ, tile is the way to go, so we tiled our entire house, but carpeted the bedrooms. We had the entire inside painted, including the ceilings. Walls Dunn Edwards Inside Passage, Ceilings Swiss coffee. New custom window coverings and just had new light fixtures and faucets installed. I got the light fixtures on clearance at a tent sale for a big light store here. Beautiful, for not much money. They were normally $250, I got them for $30. THe difference is amazing. So in all, we changed the flooring, painted the walls, ceiling and kitchen cupboards, new window coverings, light fixtures (for very cheap, but they are far from cheap looking) and plumbing fixtures. We've had compliments galore on the transformation and our realtor expects us to not necessarily get all our money back, but because of the neutral colours and the freshness of the home, coupled with up to date features like light fixtures, our home will most likely sell faster at a better price. It's move in ready and that's what you want. We didn't want to over-renovate for our area either and we're finished. We're not doing anything else. Instead of replacing all the appliances, offer a home warranty which will give buyer's peace of mind if an appliance konks out. Don't go to the expense of appliances. And don't do granite counters either if your area and price range does not support it. I wanted to do countertops and our realtor said it would be a waste of money for our area.

I drive an hour and fifteen minutes each way for my doctor (the doctors nearby wouldn't treat me for my Hashimotos or they only prescribed Synthroid).

I drove almost 3 hours to pick up a bar (wooden with a marble top) I won on eBay a few years ago. Most of the time I wouldn't drive more than an hour... depends on what it is though and how bad I want it.

lol...I may just start driving to Iowa for my tobacco. Had mild sticker shock when I bought some Saturday. At least in Iowa I wouldn't be hit with the high IL taxes.

We're only moving about an hour away, but plan on keeping most of our drs., our dentist, bank, accountant, etc. We did switch eye drs because the opthalmologist DD works for is one of the top ones in the country and he's got an office about 2 blocks from our new house.

I've been known to drive a couple of hours away for good ice cream--LOL. And we will sometimes drive about 90 miles from home to shop in a state that has no sales tax.

Only worry I'd have with going 3 hours to the dentist would be what would happen if I had a dental emergency--that would be a long, long ride with a toothache.

My sister, two friends and I have driven 5 - 6 hours from Toronto to Grove City, PA, to shop and to have a girls' getaway. It's great fun!

I used to drive over 7 hours each way to see my boyfriend. I did that every other weekend for four months, then we got a place together.

It was worth it though...we'll be married 16 years in November. :-)

I would drive several hours to see someone or something I really wanted to see. Not a dentist though.

About 4-5 years ago, I drove from, basically, Philadelphia to Akron and back - in a single day - to go to a house party to meet some cousins whom I didn't know existed.

I left as soon as I woke up on a Saturday morning...and got home around 2AM the next morning.

It was well worth it.

I will drive 552 miles to meet my new grand child (due next week). But then I have driven that distance quite often, to see my daughter. Before I moved, the drive was 93 miles longer.

I guess I can't see driving long distances for things you can get closer. I'm sure I can find a dentist or doctor within 1/2 hr at least. I don't mind driving for recreation or a special purpose. Used to drive to Canada occasionally to sightsee..... and to get beer.

Eric and I decided that we would drive either to New York (?miles) or Atlanta (700 miles) if he liked the hearing aids he tried out at Christmastime. Those are the closest place to get the brand. He decided against getting them right now but we were willing if they actually worked!

I like a road trip, too, but not for something I could do just as well closer. I would drive anywhere for someONE important to me.

My mom just drove about 900 miles roundtrip this weekend to see DD compete in her last gymnastics meet of the season. She drove up Friday afternoon, arrived around 10:30pm. Spend Saturday with us, watched the meet Sunday from 8am to 1pm (which was another hour north), then drove back to FL the same day (again arriving home around 10:30pm) b/c she had to work today.

There is a little girl here who *knows* her grandma loves her!!

I drive 6 hours each way to see the doctor who repaired the nerve in my arm. People come from all over the world to see her. I have made the drive twice in the last few weeks and will do it again in 3 weeks for a post surgery check. That time DS will be here and we will combine the doctor trip with a mini vacation and spend 2 nights in St Louis doing the tourist thing. Fortunately, my doctor is letting me get my wound check here locally this week and my suture removal here the following week.

Karen, in the 70's my sister and I traveled for over 2 hours to see Tom Jones in person...it was soooo worth it! :)

Drove three hours to save $5,000 on a new motorcycle a few years ago. We used to drive 1 1/2 to get our favorite pizza. Now it would be 1800 miles, much too far, so we don't eat much pizza since moving to FL.

I used to drive 900 mi. (each way) 4-6 times a year to see or babysit the grandkids. Did that for 7 yrs, until we moved 45 mins. away from them. Pat

We do drive about 2 1/2 hours for the cardiologist as he is so good. Our reg Dr is very good about referrals out of the area and our insurance is good all over the world. At the same time will go to Sam's club for food cannot get in Minot. Will drive up to 1 1/2 for church meetings because these same people will drive here when it is our turn.

We plan on driving over 1000 miles to Montana to pick up some antiques I bought. To me...it's worth it. I wouldn't drive 3 hours to the dentist though. I don't like them that much. LOL

We drive 100 mi. to see our eye Dr. once or twice a year.
Drove an 600 mi. round trip one time to pick up a car we bought on e-bay. Best little gas mileage car we have ever had.

Across North Cascade Highway, thru Chelan and across Blewitt Pass to see my cousin; and have lunch at her cafe..probably 300 miles but what a drive! I could go interstate 90 quicker, but we love the drive.

500 miles round trip to the Oregon Coast to see my son and his wife every three months.

60 miles 2 times a week to see my Grandkids.

Hey Jennmonkey!! 70 miles to go to XXX Rootbeer in Issaquah! 40 miles to Bellingham for Boomers! Now those are good road trips! Kathy

I drove 900 miles to the start of my Texas Tour. Drove a total of almost 3,000 miles from start to finish.

I drove 660 miles to Bakersfield on my motorcycle for a KT get together. Actually went there twice.

I love to drive, you have to drive a lot to get anywhere from where I live. I have to drive 70 miles one way just to shop in Tucson.

I have driven almost an hour for some little Krystal cheeseburgers...lol! We don't have a Krystal any closer than this and there are times that I just have to have one of those little burgers!!! Thank goodness we can crank up the Harley to make this trip and save on gas.

My DH and I have been known to drive hundreds of miles just for lunch...We live in SW Pa and he'd say, lets go for a ride....Hoping since the gas prices have gone down, we'll take up that habit again....
My DDIL comes from N. Carolina to see her MS doctor....She feels this doctor knows her case and wouldn't want to find someone else....

I've drive cross country many times to see family, a day or two to visit other family and friends. Used to drive up to five hours when I was stationed in Germany just to go on an organized walk.

This weekend we're driving 2 1/2 hours away to Indiana to go Morel mushroom hunting. I'm going to let Alex do the driving since he needs more hours to get his lisence.

One of my doctors is 25 miles away. Don't know if I would go over an hour to see a doctor, though. I did that when we lived in NV. Hard to find a good doctor or good shopping in the tiny town I lived in. We used to do all our school shopping for clothes in Reno, which was an hour away when I was a kid.

The closest hospital to us now is about a 20 minute drive.

I've also driven to Lexington (25 miles) and Louisville (60 miles) for better food choices when eating out, movies, and pool supply shopping since there were no pool dealers anywhere else that carried the filters I needed. Glad I don't have to do that anymore.

We ride about an hour to get the "best" broasted chicken. Other than that, we're kind of isolated in the middle of nowhere. There's nothing better in the neighboring towns of where we live (Bend, Oregon) that is really worth the drive - but we have been known to drive to Portland for good sushi/road trip, which is about 3.5 hours, but have made a weekend of it.
