I saw a story on that the other day. No, I would not ask my sis to marry my husband. I wouldn't marry bil either.

Well, it's a non-issue at our ages, (no kids) but I would tell my best friend that she could marry my husband if she wanted to, if she was single at the time, too, and he'd be lucky to have her.

I wouldn't marry my BIL for 100 million dollars. And he wouldn't want me anyway, I'm not as submissive as he thinks a woman should be.

I had a cousin dying of cancer and she made her husband and sister promise to try dating 3 times and see if they could marry each other. She didn't want her kids raised in the step family situation and her sister needed a stable life so both would benefit by it. they did marry and as far as I know it has worked out, they were still together the last I heard.

DH wouldn't give my sister a second look. and I feel the same about BIL

Our child is grown, but DH was more than capable of raising him and caring for himself, so even dying I would never have proposed such a thing.

As for marrying any of my brothers-in-law - hell no!

I am struggling with the entire idea of getting married...why would I want to let a civil ceremony screw up a great friendship?

While doing genealogy research of my ancestors, I have found 2 instances where a sister of a deceased wife married the husband to continue the care of a young family, or to support the husband's homelife. In one case, the new wife had previously been married and hubby had died. She brought step children into the marriage. The result was a disasater, not because of the children, but due to a change in the husband who turned sour and was at war with his family - nothing was right with the world. He became abusive and the final result was him being killed by his stepson while protecting the mother - a very sad state of affairs.

No, I do not think that a sibling should marry the widower just to continue the statua quo. However, a close relative could help the family without a marriage tie. To be sucessful, a marriage should be considered only if there is a mutual attaction.

However, during pioneer days, such marriages were common as proved by records. I know of two in my lineage that were very sucessful. Both of my parternal and maternal g-g-grandfathers married 3 times after the prior wives died. Frontier life and childbirthing was tough on wives. The Civil War was too.

Nope! I'd look after the kids. I'd even look after the husband (to some extent), but no way would I marry him! Or want my sister to marry mine...

I can't imagine even asking such a thing...or wanting such a thing! One BIL is an AZZHAT and the other is just too old...HA!

We have been looking at old buildings in our downtown area that we can convert into loft/condos for us to live in as retirement type homes. We're looking with my BFF and his partner, the reason being that we do not have children and that together we can all help one another. We both own large homes with a lot of property to maintain so we looked around and said..."What he heck were we thinking?" LOL!!!

I love both my BILs but I couldn't consummate a marriage with either one of them.

I think it was pretty common in pioneer days but we have many social supports now that those people didn't have. I have a friend who married her former brother-in-law and they are a super nice couple! It just happened though..their deceased spouses didn't suggest it.

Moot point here since I'm an only child and DH only has a sister, but I find it weird. Sounds like something from the 18th century.

Wow, sounds like the soon-to-be-deceased has major control issues! I am sure the husband would be quite capable of deciding when - and whom - to marry.

Nope...he was(dead now) a nice guy, in almost every way a caring father, but - a serious alcoholic, ran in his family. His mother was a drunk, too.

Thak goodness my two daughters are now old enough to take care of them selves. I don't like either of my sisters husbands-one's a bully, the other has some mental problems.

My biological grandmother died when my father was 5. He remarried her best friend within 6 months. I have often wondered if the ladies ever had that conversation. Of course he was a dairy farmer with a 5 year old son and 4 year old daughter... I am sure he married quickly out of need. But in the end I think they loved each other.

A friend I had in HS lost her mother at 16...brother was 12. He married his wife's sister. They are totally a June and Ward Cleaver kind of family....very straight and conservative. I kind of admire them from a distance. Absolutely everything in their house is perfect.

If I was attracted to him I wouldn't let the fact that he had been married to my sister keep me from marrying him.

I would have taken the children in a heart beat.

My mother expected to die and had ask her sister if she would consider taking me.

When I was seven years old she did pass away and her sister did take me and raised me as one of her own.

Sue and I parted in '71, I was visiting father.

Brother Bill died in an auto accident in '77, three kids were in their teens.

I moved to 50 mi. from SIL in '81, visited their family on weekends.

SIL was some interested: I wasn't. No such reference from my brother - but he wasn't expecting to die at that time, either.

I, too, saw this story online. I don't know - I can't imagine that I'd ask my sister to marry my husband and raise my children. But it depends upon so much. But, over all, I don't think I'd ask this of my sister or my husband, and if I were the surviving sister I don't think I'd consider it. Just a little to close.

But I do understand it.

I would have no problem raising ANYBODY's child as my own, if asked. And if I were single and it was 100 years ago, I could see myself moving in to take care of the household (as a business transaction, no hanky panky).

But these days? I would help as much as I could and still consider BIL to be family, but I wouldn't marry him!
