Hi Everyone, We are planning a ceiling mounted fixture - very simple, but has to be flousecsent to meet CA Title 24 requirements. I wanted to comment on the question by Joyce 6333 about the light coming on and off when you open and close the door. This was suggested to us by the lighting consultant (ie; salesman). It is accomplished by using something called a "pressure switch", that is mounted in the hinge of the door. I think when the pressure is relieved (by opening the door), the light somes on. When the door closes, the pressure is back, and the light goes off. It didn't sound like a big deal to do, but I'm not sure how easy it is to retrofit. Hope that helps. I thought it was a neat idea. (It also counts as an energy saving device for the CA Title 24 calculation).

Karenseb, I knew what I wanted on the pantry shelves and measured for storage I have a fairly good idea of what I want to store in there, though it's been so long since we had a working kitchen, I may be mis-remembering. I made a list awhile ago: spices -- we have, and will always have, a zillion. I'm thinking I'll hang these on the back of the door, or on the wall to the left as you enter. I do have a drawer across from the cooktop that could possibly work (and would be more convenient), but right now I have that filled with placemats, paper napkins, kitchen linens. I suppose I could move those into the pantry instead. chip bags / snacks canned goods pasta sauce jars peanut butter & jelly jars cereal boxes (not many) oils & vinegars spice packets nuts & dried fruit bags (in basket or in a container) bags of dried beans (in basket or in a container) condiments pasta & other grains cracker boxes coffee station bev fridge diet coke cases bottled water case large bag of rice paper towels napkins coffee, filters extra tin foil extra plastic bags extra trash bags small appliances including: crockpot, rice cooker, food processor, toaster, hand mixer mops & brooms apron -- hanging from hook on wall step ladder (could be tucked away next to the furnace-- there's space.) I don't bake very often so I figure I'll keep flour in the freezer.

I just redid my pantry which has almost your exact dimensions. California Closets did the layout and they came up with some good suggestions. They made most of the shelves to fit my large Anchor Hocking glass storage jars or my large plastic snap on containers from Costco. One addition was vertical storage for my seldom used cookie sheets and trays. That was installed fairly high since we rarely use them. Most of the shelves are adjustable. We put in wire pull outs to keep onions and potatoes fresh and off the kitchen counters. We also installed an outlet front and center in case we wanted to use small appliances in there. Our contractor also placed an LED light on the wall right above the door(instead of on the ceiling) so that light would shine directly on the shelving. He also put tape lighting hidden along the doorway for more light down low. The lights go on automatically when the door opens. We are also installing a 2x6‘ rack (I think from rev-a-shelf) on the inside of the door to hold spices and bottles in plain sight. We have spice racks and tray storage in the kitchen itself too. Like you, we put hooks left of the door for a step stool and a apron. As for depth of shelves—I am a totally dysfunctional organizer so I find narrower shelves are easier for me to see what I have and where I put stuff. For a sort of small food pantry we can fit a lot of stuff in there and it stays organized (for the most part). I can‘t believe your floor plan is almost identical to ours—I bet yours is built under the stairs too? Good luck!

IMO if you plan to use this as butlers pantry , I agree a good idea, then I would install a sink and use this space exactly like a real butlers pantry ,. Have you foor storage on one side with doors a simple set of sliding doors to make access easy. On the other side a nice set of base cabinets some glass cabinets above for all your dishes you use for entertaining and glassware , liquor and the sink is IMO a must . Set that side up as the service area for the DR and you have a perfect set up and please there is no reason to worry about moisture
