Show me your understair pantry
Comments (1)Here's ours--finished I only have the one pic, unfinished I have the other angles. Our stairs are a U-shape and the ceiling clearance is 6' under the landing at the back of the stairs. My DM has a similar set up but her area under the landing has 5' ceiling clearance. Same view as above only unfinished: Area under the landing. I took this shot from the back right corner of the pantry shown in the photo above, so these are the shelves along the back wall (on the right in the photo) and then around the corner on the left side under the landing (straight ahead in the photo): Broom area created under lower stair section (around corner again from last pic--this wall is opposite the back wall and extends under 1 or 2 steps on the lower staircase-not the greatest shot) Hope this helps!...See MoreWalk in closets, show me yours
Comments (6)You can check out lots of books just on closet spaces. I find it helpful to consider all the different options. I think storage issues are so individual--I have seen lots of closet ideas that just won't work for me because I don't like to fold things a certain way, or whatever. I hang sweaters and T's even though it's against the "rules" because I hate to fold, but will put something on a hanger in an instant. So you can find a cleverly designed closet that looks great, everything appears to have its place, but won't work for you, if you haven't given some thought to how you like to "do" things. Also, in my experience, some of the photos just don't show how much stuff we really have (you know, you'll see 3 pairs of pants, 2 short dresses, one long, a few tops--in my dreams! Or maybe I should say, that needs to be one of my goals. It does give you an opportunity to see whether you want to stay the same yourself, and design your closet to fit what you have now, or whether, in thinking about your closet, you decide to change yourself! For example, I wear mostly dress slacks and comfortable shoes you can stand and walk in, so I wear socks, like various trouser socks. I tended to "collect" socks--maybe just the right shade of something, or a clever stripe or print, in addition to having basic black and brown. So my socks started to take up substantial drawer space in my closet ! After awhile, I figured out that if I stopped defining myself with my socks, I could use the space for something else, or more breathing room. So, fewer socks for me. That is one thing to notice about the closets that don't look like there's as much stuff as you have--the reason they look good is, it is hard to have an organized closet, no matter how cool your storage is, if you try to put things too close together and have too much stuff (per unit space--if you have an entire room, you can have both a lot of stuff AND have it not packed together). Eventually the too much cramming will overcome your great original closet plan....See MoreHow best to trick this space out as a pantry?
Comments (19)If cost is no concern I'd be looking at the vertical pullouts that were posted above. If cost is a concern, I think I would do shallow shelves, around 4" deep on the sides. They would be deep enough for 1 can, nothing would get lost, everything would be in sight. I'd place these shelves rather close together. I might leave 1 or two of the shelves farther apart, say for ketchup bottles or other tall bottles that you'd want to store. Space the rest of the shelves so that there is just room enough for the height of 1 can on each shelf. I'd do the shelves in the back somewhere between 12" and 15" deep. I would not want the shelves to be 20" deep. It's too deep. Things will get lost in the back and you will have trouble retrieving items because things will probably get stored in layers. Have you posted a floorplan? The creative minds on here might see some other solutions for your space....See MoreLargish Pantry Design - Please Show Me Your Favorite Ideas
Comments (15)Buehl, thanks so much for the link to the pantry thread. I'd read before, but forgotten about. I read with pleasure again this morning. Loved seeing your pantry again - the 15" shelves look perfect. nancyjwb - Thank you too. I had not seen those. eam - But the pricey inserts will be half the fun :) I do love gadgets. All I'll be storing in here are canned, dry goods, cereal, soda and the like. I've always like the apothecary/multiple drawers look. Here's a first stab. If I place this in the space between the two walls, I have 52.5 inches. Here's something that size, with three 48" wide lower drawers, and two upper doors. This breaks down to a face frame, three drawer fronts, two doors. Lighted top. Handy DH:) Doors and drawers would open with 'Tip-On' - press to open. It could be black with ORB handles on every square... This design takes it from floor to 8' ceiling, without a lot of room for trim work. Regarding storage, I spent some time on the Blum website this morning and am considering their Legrabox drawers. I can add an interior rollout and an inner drawer, and fit ~50 cans laying horizontally (so I can see labels) like this, per layer/drawer, for a total of 100 cans in a 12" tall/48" wide drawer:) Thoughts/comments? Please be frank; my feelings won't be hurt....See Moredejongdreamhouse
