How about Weathered Wood for the shingle color? I think most roofing manufacturers carry it. It's reflective, goes with any color, and is less stark than charcoal or black. Here's green-black for the shutters & Weathered Wood shingles.

I think a beautiful Monet blue would be stunning on your door.

yayagal - I'm not sure what Monet blue is - do you mean similar to a periwinkle blue? An example would be helpful. Thanks.

BM Briarwood for your door would go nicely with the red brick.

If you are going to buy new shutters instead of just painting the ones you have, consider shutters that are wider, like they could really close and cover the whole window.

I would like to see a softer, lighter color for the shutters, a rich medium gray green for example. Not dull though and not so dark that the siding becomes washed out.

Is there something wrong with the roof? It looks fine in the pictures. Sometimes painting the roof line a deeper, richer color can change the whole look of the roof. So if you went with a gray green shutter, pick the next darker color to it and paint trim/gutters along the roof line.

The roof is 2 years shy of it's advertised "life" of 25 years. In the back of the house which faces west a good many of the shingles have begun to curl. We've had it inspected and the recommendation was to replace it in the next year or two. We've gotten our money's worth, I believe.

A vote for a dark gray roof -- with a similar color for the new larger shutters.

I would like to see a fresh white door to work in better with the white storm door -- but would paint the side shutters in white too -- for a much larger and far more cohesive visual focus for the front of the house.

Add a couple of large and taller white pots by the front door -- plant with a couple of rocket junipers or taller bushes.

Add a larger front lantern by the front door.

Add a large new door mat in black for the front door.

Hang large fresh green ferns along the edge of the roof the front porch.

Add two white benches -- one under each of the two front windows. Add small bright cushions.

Add fresh mulch to the gardens and "pockets" of bright white annuals. Add a line of solar lights to the front walkway to the front door.

I'll take a different slant here -

If you intend to sell within a year I would not purchase new anything. You could get an estimate on your roof & if potential buyers bring that issue to the table - you can give them credit for the amt. Unless roof is leaking - that is different story - but your existing roofing will need to be ripped to place new shingles.

As far as the rest - I would not paint until you give the whole exterior a good power washing - see what is revealed then decide on paint or replacement of shingles. A full view storm may be worthy.

Interestingly, blue has cycled back into popularity, so your door doesn't look dated, but maybe a slightly different shade of blue would look more up to date - not sure. Or a sophisticated gray - young buyers would love it. I would remove the storm door - which DOES date the house. Put a fresh coat of paint on the shutters, use the replacement roof as a bargaining tool with the buyers. Let them mention it, agree to replace, and allow them to choose the color.

Put a nice seating arrangement on the porch and some planters. I would put some money into renovating the landscaping. I would consider getting rid of the some of the large shrubs in front of the house. The plant on the right side of the sidewalk looks terrible right now. Unless it looks super wonderful when it leafs out, maybe that's not what you want there. Drive around to some builder's model homes and look at their landscaping for ideas.

The cupula over the garage is darling. Maybe you could put copper siding on it? Prettier mailbox and street numbers? Prettier light fixture? Stagers tell us that potential buyers spend a few minutes at your door as the real estat agent is opening the box to get to your keys.

graywings - great input. Thanks. The shrub to the right of the sidewalk has nice green weepy branches when it comes out. Next to that is a very hard pruned smoke tree which is beautiful in leaf. We had to cut it back hard last year as it was getting huge, but it will look nice this year. In fact, we pruned back most of our trees/shrubs pretty hard last year, but maybe we could even take some more off this year.

The landscaping is still in winter garb right now, but does look much better in spring/summer. There are some nice grasses and ground cover with white and periwinkle flowers. Just not up yet.
