Where do you put your dishes that don't go into the DW?
Comments (24)sjhockeyfan - I rinse them out and drip dry them before they go in the bin. Keeps everything cleaner and a bit less smelly. You could practically eat out of my recycling bin! Not so much off my floors, unless you come over one minute after my cleaner leaves. I think I mentioned before, trash is serious business up here in NS. Compost, trash, paper, recycling, cardboard are the five separate things our city mandates. Then I have another compost going for my compost pile and I separate out my refundable bottles and cans so the pickers can take them without rooting through my recyclables (a few mornings picking up recyling all over the street from a ripped open bag teaches you that trick). Without a garage it's hard to keep it all tidy. This post was edited by robotropolis on Thu, May 1, 14 at 15:51...See MoreWhere do you keep your dish drainer?
Comments (27)I haven't owned a dish drainer in years--in fact not since we moved into this house almost 12 years ago. Before that, the drainers we had were always really ugly, so perhaps that fed my aversion to them. We hand wash pots and pans, stoneware, and some glassware, but there are seldom more than a few pieces unless we're entertaining. We have always just put a towel on the counter. With the new kitchen, we had runnels installed in the counter and we have a grid in the sink. We place dishes directly on the runnels to dry, and if there are just a few small items, we dry them on the sink grid. So now, we don't even use the towel, unless the 'load' is particularly large....See MoreWhere to you hang your dish towels?
Comments (42)If I were to hang my dish towel (even a clean dry one) on a lower cabinet, dishwasher, hook, etc, my dog would definitely play with it and possibly eat it. (She has opened a lower cabinet door to eat clean dish towels before.) But I personally have thought about putting a hook or towel ring or bar (like you might use in the bathroom for a hand towel) on the wall by my sink or on an upper cabinet side next to the sink. Or possibly a towel bar mounted under the cabinet close to the backsplash. I would want the towel not to be too obtrusive while hanging, but accessible. I haven't done this (since my kitchen is not remodeled), but it's an idea I'm hoping to bring to my (eventual) kitchen remodel....See MoreWhere do you keep your dish towels?
Comments (38)We have a range with oven plus a wall oven, which I know is a luxury. The wall oven is the primary one so towels on the range oven door handle only flirt with the floor on holidays and they're too busy to be drying then! We have adopted the system my neighbor introduced me to - white terrycloth towels (buy in bulk at Costco) are hand towels. Flat-weave colored towels are for drying dishes, never hands. So the dish towels are still clean after drying the dishes because you never used them on your hands. Your system could be different, but this made sense to me. At the end of the day they all migrate to the laundry room. Life is too short for musty towels and worrying about bacteria. Dish sponges too, washer and dryer....See Morelabpa
