do you wash your dishes before you wash your dishes?
Comments (20)One of the reasons to *not* rinse/prewash dishes is if you use an enzyme detergent it needs the food particles to work better. It'll etch glass and stuff if it doesn't have the food particles. I can't explain it well, but it's easy research for a more thorough explanation. Most just recommend scraping the dishes (and really, who wouldn't?!) then into the DW. I haven't had a dishwasher for more than 30 years but I'm starting to miss it. I would get grossed out though when it left stuff on it. When washing by hand and using a good soap it gets clean. Sure, you just put it back in and rewash but it still bugs me. It also bugs me to see people leave dirty dishes in the DW for a week before washing them. Argh! If it takes a week to fill it, you should have a smaller DW or use a top rack only feature. This is what impresses me about the F&P Dish Drawers. And geez, I can wash a few dishes FAR faster than an hour or two for a dishwasher! LOL And when you compare the time to load the dishwasher vs washing, it's pretty close. Time's not a factor. It's the hassle of washing them. I soak my dishes and a quick swish, rinse in HOT water and into the drainer to dry. Putting them away is comparable to time in a DW. Oh, and one thing I found out quickly, the way you load it makes a big difference. You have to learn how the water sprays and make sure it's not blocked for effective washing....See MoreFirst dish you prepared for your DH/DW/SO?
Comments (29)lbpod, That is funny!! Italian Roasted Lemon Rosemary Chicken w/Potatoes. But at the time I didn't know that I could cook Italian. My mom didn't share our heritage with us so I thought it was Southern food until we went to Italy. We walked in to a family style restaurant in Rome; the food was laid out on the buffet and the first thing Raymond saw was the Roasted Lemon Chicken. He said that's the first meal you made for me! When we got back to the US I told my mom and grandmother about the different things on the menu that were pretty much familiar to me. They verified, yes those are Italian dishes....See MoreWhere do you put paper towels, wet dish towels, cutting boards,
Comments (35)Paper Towels: On a vertical stand next to my sink. I like having them handy. It is an inexpensive one from Target. In the past, I had them hanging under the upper cabinets. After we remodeled, I needed a new solution. I didn't think the countertop one would be stable, but it is and I really like it. I enjoying being able to grab the whole roll and take it to another room if I need to. Wet dish towels: I have a Rev-a-shelf hanging rod thing on the inside of one of my cabinet doors under the sink. I only use it occasionally though. Usually I have a dishtowel folded in half laying/hanging right on the counter where I stand at the sink. I use it for drying my hands, fruit, dishes, etc. throughout the day. It dries quickly. I have a dish drainer on one side of my double sink, so anything I hand wash usually just dries in there. If I've entertained and have extra hand washing with more dishes on a towel on the counter, then those go on the racks under the sink until they dry. Sometimes if I have one that is really wet and yucky, I just throw it on the tile floor in my laundry room (closet). It is the only tile I have in the whole house (I like to take advantage of it.) :) Cutting boards: In a vertically divided cabinet in one of my lowers. Plastic bags: I donate them to a food bank, so I throw them in the trunk of my car until I see my friend who takes them for me. :)...See MoreWhere do you hang your dish towels?
Comments (37)Mnerg, I hang towels on a simple long handle like Threebees, only it's a regular drawer handle that's even simpler and shorter (holds any kitchen towel folded in half lengthwise). It does NOT match my other, regular handles--but no one notices because of the towel hanging on it, and that's what I wanted to point out. The handle is the same metal as the others and has simple bent ends with no mass or detail to stick out and grab attention. BTW, I have two. One is also on my garbage pullout next to the sink. No matter how messy my hands are, it doesn't matter with a towel always there. But the other is on the inside of my island right where my hands get messy 95% of the time. When I think of the things I did right in this kitchen these little details always leap right out....See Morejackfre
