they've been so co-operative this year.

Male cardinal on a branch.

Female on branch.

Cardinal in grass.

and finally...last year, we saw for the first time, a male cardinal feed a seed to a female (part of courting). I never was able to get a shot until yesterday, not a good one, but I did get one off!

All with Canon Digital Rebel 400D and Canon 70-200mm F4.0L IS lens.

Oh my, those are gorgeous birds. I love cardinals and have seen them in Ontario and the Carolinas. We don't have them here so it is a joy to me to see them. Thanks!

Thanks Mehitabel!!!! Really!!!!a ton!!!!! T-bred ive been growing it for 2 years almost! it seems like just yesterday i got it in the mail. Uhh ive been growing it outside untill winter came,so its been overwintering on my dresser underlights, and i let it sit out there in a south window on my porch along with all my others. this blooming plant was actually A division of the original plant. the pot was so crowded that the plant started to decline. i was so scared to divide it but it all turned out amazing! this is the smaller portion of the division. as we speak its making roots. i just hope it does not exhaust itself. but it will have plenty of time to rest after. i like to give it a month or two rest when its done blooming like my book says to. so kepp your eyes out for that album im gathering the photos now. Calvin I love green orchids too!!!!!! there is just something about them that you just dont see everyday ao when you see it its like really they come in green toooo! (LoL) Im crazy about this plant!!!

First is the big labeled family photo. Citrus: there's seedling lemon, tangelo, pummelo, yuzu, along with an unlabeled sudachi. There's also a larger grafted yuzu and a grafted calamondin. As for non-citrus, there's three nightshades (tamarillo, naranjilla and coconas), two pots of seedling guavas, and a rather spindly ice cream bean seedling. Second is the unlabeled pic. Third, is a closer view including the big yuzu and calamondin, the pummelo and tangelo in front of them, and the big naranjilla on the right side. Last, this is a close-up of some of the seedling (non-grafted) citrus - from top to bottom, yuzu, pummelo, tangelo and sudachi. The black pot is tamarillo sprouts, which I need to thin out. To me, the only notable thing here is how different papeda-type citrus look from other citrus when young - smaller, slower in growth, smaller leaves, but very lush, small (not visible in this pic) spines, but more of 'em than other citrus. Love pics. Such pretty colors. Lupines here have alot of spikes and the purple is starting to show on some. I know I have a white and purple one somewhere if it survived. I'm stuck inside doing laundry and cleaning house. Company arriving for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend so need to get a head start on house chores and still get my gardening time in this week. Joan, These are wonderful. Thanks for posting them for us to see. I'd love to be able to take these kinds of photos of birds. Are these shots (especially the second one) straight out of the camera or is there any post processing? I have a Nikon D80 and and hoping to find an equivalent Nikon lens that will do as well as your Canon. Thank you for any help. Pam

Beautiful Joan. I saw cardinals do this courting thing about 10 years ago. I think it's so cute.

Fantastic shots, Joan!

During water aerobics, we had a male cardinal chirping away on a light post. Caught everyone's attention.

Aren't they beautiful....

A few days ago after just arriving home and getting out of the car...I kept hearing a soft chirp in the trees that grow in the circle of our driveway.
I walked under them and looked up...There were some female cardinals...then I noticed more of them...I walked closer and there were about 20 more or less...that took off flying. I've never seen that before.

I think they were having a ladies meeting.

Really, really nice. I only see cardinals maybe 3 times a year, but yesterday I saw a beautiful male one. Ironically the same day that you posted this.
